Indeedy, we're still the same people but being the bunch of multi-instrumentalists that we are, we've got Adam on organ now with Mikey moving over to bass.
The Surly Young Bucks are:
Max Kerman: vocals, piano, guitar
Mike DeAngelis: bass
Aaron Goldstein: pedal steel, guitar
Adam Melnick: organ, piano
Dan Griffin: drums, vocals
Lynn Seward: vocals
We rehearsed twice today (one impromptu but extrememly productive rehearsal that began at 2am and just finished now), and holy shit is it ever coming together. It has been more than 6 months since we played together and in that time we all put in a serious amount of work with our other bands, so the work ethic was incredibly strong today. We even have a new tune. I can't express how much I'm looking forward to this gig.

We're reuniting at Pepper Jack's, Friday July 6. It's been six months and all previous grievances have been resolved. Max and Dan are co-existing rather well after the sordid affair that was their romantic undoing. At times I even catch them gazing longingly at each other during particularly emotional portions of certain songs; as if the old glint had not subsided in the first place.
For reals, though, we all took six months to work hard with other bands. Our chops are up, our work ethic is up, we are sounding good. Max even penned a new tune for the occasion.
In keeping with our wet dream to emulate The Band, we have shifted a multi-instrumentalist or two and arrived at a piano-organ-guitar-bass-drums (+ guest Donna Jean) combination.
The Surly Young Bucks are:
Max Kerman: vocals, piano, guitar
Mike DeAngelis: bass, vocals
Aaron Goldstein: pedal steel, guitar
Adam Melnick: organ, piano
Dan Griffin: drums, vocals
Lynn Seward: vocals
UPDATE: The Sweet Homewreckers have just been added to the bill, joining the Mississippi Kings. Friggin sweet night!

KILHUMINZU
I've wanted to see this Stoney Creek band for a long time
Then they broke up
Then Steve convinced them to play one last gig - in our living room

Address is 44 Carling Street. Music starts at 10. Entrance through the back door, which is off the driveway on Macklin Street, across and up from the Beverly Hills apartments. Giant white sailboat in the driveway should help you find the place. Please try to avoid tobacco smoke inside. Everybody welcome, so long as they're cool and won't steal or break our shit. Please respect our neighbours, who are being very cool about this, by not being a screaming lunatic outside the house. You will be asked to pay what you can, money to be distributed to the bands.
- For your additional kind donation of $2 to our household utility fund, you will be awarded a free party favour in the form of a bottle of Lakeport beer (variety of your choosing, while supplies last), provided you are of legal age and unintoxicated at the time of transaction. One party favour per donation.
- For your additional kind donation of $1 to our household utility fund, you will be awarded a free party favour in the form of a delicious vegetarian samosa. One party favour per donation.
This one is going to be fun...

ditto on the Junior thing, he plays a lap steel.
How about anything off of Blue Rodeo's Five Days in July? The freakin' pedal solos on that record smoke like it's nobodies business. Still havn't found out if that was Bob Egan, though I doubt it as he joined Rodeo in 2001 or 2002, well after Five Days. (someone here I know can track that down....)
Anything that Buddy Emmons plays on.
Neil Franz III who played with Gram Parsons in the Fallen Angels (who was also from Toronto) is also a sick good steel player.
You could also go with the very obvious (yet not mentioned except via The Word) anything by Robert Randolph....
CSN Teach your Children is also/actually Jerry playing steel.
Anything pre-Egan in Blue Rodeo would have been Kim Deschamps, who now makes his living in Austin as a hired gun. Incidentally, I take steel lessons from Bob, he's an awesome dude and an incredible player.

I forgot to mention the countless Drive By Truckers tunes that have memorable pedal steel parts, courtesy of one John Neff. 'The Deeper In', the first tune on Decoration Day, has probably my favourite Truckers steel moment, an 8-bar break.
-
You could make an entire mix of Neil Young tunes featuring Ben Keith on the steel and you'd be covering most of my favourite steel lines - Albuquerque, See the Sky About to Rain, etc. The Ryan Adams record Jacksonville City Nights is riddled with heart-wrenching steel and the song Hard Way to Fall boasts one of my absolute favourite steel lines ever recorded, even though it's so simple. It's the line under the lyric, "That she doesn't have to worry, and it'll be alright." Take it from a real-life steel player - it's a heavy tune.

It was stupendous indeed. The Spades were here jamming until 5 in the morning. Fuckin fun times.
-
Happy birthday, my good man.

Same with me, I left work to steal wireless at the local Quizno's to try for tickets, and no luck. Looks like I'll be looking for scalpers...there is no way I can miss this show. And I don't even really go to many shows anymore.
-
Fuck yes. This is awesome.
-
Oh, looks like I failed on the linkage.
myspace.com/wearecharlemagne for future reference
Hope the show was good

Bumpity bump, this show is tonight
Attention police: We'd also like to be clear that we're not selling beer. Rather, we'll be providing it as a party favour to unintoxicated people of age in exchange for a small donation to our utility bill fund. We had a shitty roommate who didn't pay his share all last year and we're trying to cover some of that. Everything in the PWYC jar will go to the bands. Woo hoo!
-
My friends in Charlemagne are opening the show, they're worth catching StnMtn.
