  1. The two movies that have scared the hell out of me over my life:

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1970s version, in which Jerry Garcia actually does a short, little banjo tune - I believe it was GDTRFB, but can't remember for sure)

    and

    Children of the Corn.

Geez, I'm scared right now just writing this!

  2. I've waited a long time for someone to say that, Zimmy, and I agree. I only saw DMB once, at Barrymores in Ottawa about a million years ago. I could not believe that jamband fans liked him, as he was as boring live as he was in the studio. I have long presumed that he must have improved since then, as cool people still go to his shows, but you'll never catch me at another one...

  3. Your apology is graciously accepted.

We all get in "moods" at times. The best we can do is try to bring as much calm and good to the world as we can, despite the shite that may be flung at us. Overall, I think this board usually serves that purpose, and I have every confidence that it will do so again.

My best to all you Skanktuarians.

  4. Well, clearly I read and write at a "grade 11 special needs level". My own fault.

As you once wrote on this board, "We can't all be as erudite as you, old man."

Zero: I have never once attacked you, yet you have insulted me twice on this board. Wake up.

  5. I think Zimmerman was attempting to support you, Zero; not speak against you. Jello Biafra/the DKs are writing/singing about just the sort of jerks that you met last weekend, and putting them down. I don't think Zimmerman means anything but to stand by you with his post; but I do not mean to speak for him. It is just an observation.

  6. Good point. What have you done with the REAL J-Roc? (We are very protective of those in our community, and are a little concerned that J-Roc is being held captive somewhere while you teach him to spell, so if you have a ransom note then send it along already... ;))

  7. Grew up in Toronto, then Ottawa, then Toronto again, then Kingston, then Vancouver, now Whistler. I'm a lawyer (and have received at least one phone call from a potential client wanting to retain me to help retrieve his "blown glass products" from the local RCMP who had "confiscated" them). Never blown any glass myself.

Been seeing concerts for a little more than 20 years, and "jambands", beginning with the Dead in the late-'80s....

Coolest thing I did this weekend: Trailer Park Boys live, hosting a comedy night in Vancouver! Woo hoo!

Hey, that might be a good way to get things going on this west coast board, and in a positive direction:

What's the coolest thing everyone did this weekend? (...and reading tales of woe on this message board doesn't count)

  8. So, the Trailer Park Boys were amusing, to say the least. They opened up a night of comedy by introducing themselves, and then with some rambling on about Sunnyvale Trailer Park.

The crowd was pretty rowdy. The first thing someone did was run up to the stage to hand Ricky a cigarette; which he gladly accepted. Shortly after that, of course, a big fatty followed; which Ricky proudly held up for the crowd. (Looked like a good, solid roll, although slightly "pregnant" - perhaps 1.5 to 2 gms., but I digress...)

The evening then went on to have 8 really good comedians:

    -Derek Edwards

    -Irwin Barker

    -Eddie Brill

    -Zach Galifianakis

    -Darryl Lenox

    -Demetri Martin

    -Costaki Economopoulos

    -Maria Bamford

A couple weren't stellar, but they all had their moments, and overall they were hilarious.

Unfortunately, the audience was clearly there to see the Trailer Park Boys and there were a number of hecklers throughout the other performances that were really just rude; both to the comics and the audience. A few comics really let them have it though.

After the comedians, the Trailer Park Boys came out for their real "set", which was about 15 minutes. They started out going on about Sunnyvale again, and a girl ran up to the stage to get Julian to sign her breasts; which he did. Then some more Sunnyvale humour. Then a guy ran up to the stage to extend his hand out in which there was a ziploc containing about an oz. of BC's phinest. The bouncers actually looked a little perplexed at that, and sort of shot looks at each other, like, "Do we stop this? Ricky seems to like it..." so they just sort of waited for Ricky to accept the oz. and then just pushed the guy gently back toward the back of the theatre to let him go on his way and watch the rest of the show, rather than detain him or something equally stupid. He actually ended up sprawling out on the floor lying on his back to watch the rest of the show in the aisle next to me. (Gotta love BC!)

After a bit more Sunnyvale humour, a skid with a mullet (and no shirt of course) came running out from backstage with an electric guitar and duct tape. He taped the guitar to Bubbles, in lieu of a guitar strap - beautiful trailer park ingenuity and fashion all rolled into one!

Bubbles began with the opening riff from "Closer to the Heart", and sang a bit of the song. (I swear, Velvet, I thought of you and actually had my cell phone in my hand to call you and let you listen to that one live, but he cut it short.) Ricky then explained that he had several plans for the future, either staying in BC, or bringing some of our local foliage home with him to go into business out east. Either way, he needed money, and wanted 400 dollars from Bubbles, which he knew Bubbles had. Bubbles then had to admit that he met a woman last night in a Vancouver bar, and brought her back to his hotel room. He watched movies with her, and didn't realize until quite late that she was a hooker, and the evening was gonna cost 400 bucks. His big regret was, "Had I known I was on the clock, I would have at least touched her boobies." He then played a cool song, which seemed to be called "Liquor and Whores". After that, they told us about the upcoming season, which will include a Christmas episode. The episode will be called "Dear Santa, Go Fu©k Yourself". Bubbles then played a song with that same title.

They did a bit more humour, and that was all she wrote. It was pretty entertaining, and the comics were great. I really didn't know what to expect, but it was a good, fun evening.

(Oh ya, we skipped seeing themasses after, as the people with me were not into it, for various reasons.)

  9. I might be able to help with half of your problem:

It's been a long time since I read it, but if I remember correctly, his metaphysics was based on the theory that he would doubt everything that could possibly be doubted, until he arrived at a first principle, which he could not possibly doubt.

That first principle was the idea that a being, a thinking being, had to exist to do that doubting and that thinking being was him. ("I think therefore I am.")

He also drew the logical conclusion that that being is finite. As a finite being, it had to have been created by an infinite being. From this, he drew the conclusion that the finite being has a concept of the infinite.

The only way a finite being can have a concept of the infinite is if the infinite provided that concept to the finite being.

Logically, therefore, since Descartes exists (at least as a thinking being of some sort) an infinite being must exist. That infinite being, of course, is god. God, therefore, logically implants those ideas in the thinking being, Descartes, and he therefore knows those ideas. Further as they are implanted him by the infinite, they are obviously metaphysically true.

(As an aside, this, of course, is a specious argument in that the finite does not really have a concept of the infinite. The finite is only able to conceive of the idea of something being infinite, although it can have no actual understanding.)

Unfortunately for you, however, that is only half the answer, and I have never really studied Descartes' mathematics; just his metaphysics and not really in any great depth, at that.

Besides, I am just a simple caveman so what do I know anyway...
