    Toronto Jazz Fest

Just saw this blog posting on the Jazz Fest site: http://torontojazz.com/guide/whats-so-good-about-marco-benevento What's So Good about Marco Benevento ... For his TD Toronto Jazz Festival show, Marco will be joined by Andrew Barr (drums) and Reed Mathis (bass/strings); they'll be playing music from Between the Needles and Nightfall. The concert happens at Church of the Holy Trinity, a beautiful space and one which will perfectly capture the trio's ambient sounds. The Marco Benevento Trio performs June 29, 7 pm at Church of the Holy Trinity. For tickets and information, visit Marco's festival page. [i'd be there if I wasn't going to be at the Levon show.]
  2. Hey all, Has anyone been down to Nathan Phillips Square yet for any of the Jazz Fest shows? Thinking about checking out Taj Mahal tonight via the free route (beer tent) that I've heard about for so many years, but have never tried. Just wondering if anyone else has given this a try yet this year, and how well one can see and hear the show. Looks like the Herbie show went on as planned last night, despite chaos that unfolded right in that area yesterday afternoon, and nonstop presence of riot cops into the night.
  3. Thanks everybody! I slipped out of work slightly early and about to go biking around in Toronto a bit. Celebrating tonight with an Ethiopian feast and a little party at a friend's place. Nothing grabbing my fancy in a major way in terms of live music tonight (that I can persuade a large, diverse crew to go to) but we'll find something. Maybe Jim Guthrie at the 'Shoe. This is an incredibly exciting time to be in Toronto! Chopppers flying overhead, I can hear the honking and cheering from Portugal and Brazil fans now taken up a notch with Spain's win 30 min ago (I live on College in Little Italy and it is going nuts).. Meanwhile not far down the road at College & Yonge, police have just put on their riot gear as the first major G20 protest approaches them. It's good to be alive!

    My BIRTHDAY forum please.
  5. Yeahhh I can't wait for this! Admittedly I know nothing about John Hiatt, and wonder how much of the audience will be in the same position. Probably mostly just me. Anyways, I'm pumped! Edger, G20 will be long forgotten by Tuesday.
  6. Just came across this great line-up on day 1 of something called Dog's Nest at Dover - a festival happening in Port Dover. I haven't read up on the history of it but I am guessing this is the yearly biker fest...? Anyways, looky the lineup for day one: Thurs Aug 12 Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks Garth & Maud Hudson Colin Linden The Sadies B.W. Pawley & Plum Loco Tix $40+ http://www.dogsnest.ca/
  7. I just found out that NO FOOD is allowed into the Toronto Island show.. Not even blankets are allowed! Total BS. What am I gonna do with all of these flour tortillas?
  8. I loved the budweiser burrito concept.

    Let's talk NXNE

I went to see The Africa Trilogy (a play, part of Luminato) and saw no music! Still not sure what my game plan is for today, but I'm leaning towards spending the whole night at the El Mocambo. Not sure if I'll make it down to the hostel for the Kelp BBQ - looks like I'll be putting in a full day at work!
  10. With festival season upon us, I am reminded of the most excellent thread on techniques for smuggling booze into festivals, which came up last Summer connected with Ottawa Blues Fest. Can someone find that gem of a thread for us all to revisit? On a related note, what is the security situation like for Toronto Island concerts? It's going to be a long day on Saturday and I don't want to minimize my spendings. I hear the search is quite thorough...? :relax:

Anyone checking out any of tonight's shows?
  12. They have a pretty damn good lineup! Especially considering I saw Kim Mitchell headline that same festival 5 or 6 years ago.

    Let's talk NXNE

As a part of NNXNE (Not North By North East), those in the area should check out The Prince Brothers at Tranzac, this Thursday night. Jennifer LFO opens. THE PRINCE BROTHERS - http://www.myspace.com/princebrothers w/ Jennifer LFO Thurs June 17 Tranzac (292 Brunswick Ave. at Bloor) PWYC I believe 10pm
  14. Hey all, My friend has two lawns for sale (face value) for Phish at the CMAC Performing Arts Center in Canandaiga NY on Tues June 29th. He's opting for Levon Helm at Massey Hall instead - so am I! If interested, call Steve at 905-979-5020. The tix are in Hamilton, but he can accommodate wherever you are. :dazed:
  15. NXNE on Friday - but hopefully not too late a night as I want to save steam for Saturday. Island party on Saturday - I want to see Zeus and The Beauties so it'll be an early start and I imagine a lot of frisbee tossing during the afternoon. Scott we should meet up! Nicole is coming and a whole buncha folks. I'm not ruling out a drunken stagger to the 'Shoe to catch Huron on Saturday night after the Island, but it's a stretch. Pavement is gonna be aweseome. EYE magazine did a great article on the reunion: LINK
  16. It's too late - no more scheduled shows involving The Africa Project at the moment. He did about a dozen over the Winter, with a bigger group (involving a show at Dominion Chalmers Church in Ottawa - only Canadian date). The album and the documentary film Throw Down Your Heart are both VERY DAMN GOOD!

I'm thinking about getting a 1 day pass for this Friday, as all the shows are adding up. I don't have the schedule in front of me now(*), but here's what I remember caught my eye: - Kelp records BBQ - Dark Mean at Sneaky Dee's - Dave Myles, Old Man Luedecke (sp) at the Dakota - Golden Dogs, White Cowbell Oklahoma, Rich Aucoin, etc at El Mocambo Thursday night looks packed full of good stuff - wish I wasn't working on Friday! Saturday is the Toront Island show - will have to see if I have any energy left once I get back to the mainland that night. If I can swing it though, Horseshoe it is! * NXNE and NOW magazine's online listings for NXNE are hard to follow. This week's print edition of NOW, however, makes it a bit easier to map out what is happening where.

Interesting! Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know about this. I work that day but will see about making it for the last band.
  19. Nahh c-towns I think that was around Spring 2006. Good times by the camp fire!
  20. Whew! To be 24 again.
  21. http://exclaim.ca/articles/generalarticlesynopsfullart.aspx?csid1=115&csid2=844&fid1=47257 The Sea and Cake Join Broken Social Scene on North American Tour 6/11/2010 By Stephen Carlick Those of you planning to catch Broken Social Scene on their massive North American tour this year just got a lot more bang for your buck. Indie/jazz quartet the Sea and Cake have signed on as supporting act for almost the entire jaunt. The Sea and Cake will join the tour on September 13 in Washington, DC and will remain until the tour’s conclusion in Los Angeles in later October. Of course, the news isn’t terribly surprising. As we reported earlier this year, Sea and Cake members Sam Prekop and John McEntire both played a large part in the recording and, in the latter case, producing of the Toronto collective’s latest, Forgiveness Rock Record. The Sea and Cake’s last album was 2008’s Car Alarm. News of a possible new album has yet to surface. The band’s tour dates, all of which are with Broken Social Scene, are below. Tour dates: 9/13 Washington, DC - The Warner Theatre 9/14 Philadelphia, PA - TLA 9/17 Boston, MA - House of Blues 9/18 New York, NY - Central Park, Rumsey Playfield 9/20 New Haven, CT - Toad's Place 9/21 Northampton, MA - Calvin Theater 9/22 Burlington, VT - Higher Ground 9/24 Ithaca, NY - State Theater 9/25 Buffalo, NY - Town Hall 10/1 Ann Arbor, MI - Michigan Theater 10/3 Milwaukee, WI - Pabst Theater 10/4 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue 10/6 Winnipeg, Manitoba - Burton Cummings Theatre 10/7 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - Odeon 10/8 Calgary, Alberta - MacEwan Hall 10/9 Edmonton, Alberta - Winspear Centre 10/10 Kelowna, British Columbia - Community Theatre 10/12 Victoria, British Columbia - Element 10/13 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore 10/14 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore 10/15 Seattle, WA - Paramount Theatre 10/16 Portland, OR - Crystal Ballroom 10/19 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern
  22. Hey y'all, Toronto is the place to be this week/weekend with the NXNE festival bringing us a gazillion great shows. For those of us who aren't getting passes, what is the deal with getting into individual shows? Can you get to a show without a NXNE pass? I want to go to this: And also might try to get in to the Dakota for some of Dave Myles' show. (ps - changed the thread title to open it up)
