  1. Saw this come across my fb timeline and found it an interesting read and figured I'd share. Small exchange between writer Andy Langer, Sharon Chapman editor for Austin-American Statesman and Erin Walter the freelance writer. Below is link for Carr article in NYT.

For South by Southwest, Lady Gaga filmed something of an infomercial for Doritos, urging people to use the hashtag #boldstage and submit a video of themselves doing something “bold†to compete for access to her performance. (In fact, any journalist covering the event was required to do the same thing, which explains why I — and my colleague Jon Pareles — were not there. If we had done so, we would have consented to “give sponsor a royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, nonexclusive license†to use our social media efforts to sell corn chips.)

We missed quite a spectacle, from what I can see in video clips and news reports. Lady Gaga was smeared in barbecue sauce and mock-roasted like a pig and then, with the ink on the check from Doritos barely dry — and with millions destined for her charity — she bit the tortilla chip that fed her. “I won’t play by your†— insert street-cred adjective — “rules,†she said.

She then wagged a crooked finger at her fans who were shooting pictures on their phone and had tweeted their way in at her instruction: “When you leave this earth, no one is going to care what you tweeted. Don’t let the machine and don’t let technology take you from this earth.â€

And in a move that might seem redundant given the irony that she had already coated herself with, Lady Gaga invited the performance artist Millie Brown on stage to drink a bottle of neon green liquid and vomit all over her. Her actions — to happily shill for Doritos, then deliver a lecture on the importance of independent thought — perfectly encapsulate the conflicted state of the industry.

(You could say it was a new low, but last year, I saw Public Enemy, musical heroes of my youth, perform “Fight the Power†inside a mock Doritos vending machine.)

  2. That'll teach me for ever paying attention to anything TMZ has to say.

Funnily enough' date=' it wasn't TMZ.com, but a non-affiliated TMZ lookalike at the URL TMZ.today which "broke" the story. It doesn't look like it was ever mentioned on the "legit" TMZ.[/quote']

Yeah, I learned that yesterday after posting. Typically I approach this shit as false first. Yesterday however, I let my guard down. Perhaps due to the afternoon boneshakers or four hours sleep, I dunno but either way I fell for it. Simply reminds me that cynicism is a healthy & necessary attribute.

Actor Wayne Knight, better known to most for playing one of the most indelible roles on NBC's "Seinfeld" as the charater "Newman" is dead and two other passengers are critically injured after their vehicle slammed into a disabled semi-tractor-trailer late Saturday night along Route 446 near the Pennsylvania-New York state border in Eldred Township.

  4. Canadians who are accused of online copyright infringement could soon be seeing demands for money in the mail from a U.S. anti-piracy company.

California-based Rightscorp, a publicly traded firm that says it represents more than one million copyright claims, announced this week it is planning to expand into Canada.

But because copyright laws here are different from the U.S., Canadian internet providers may not be as willing as their U.S. counterparts to play ball with a company many would describe as a copyright troll.

  5. Love the idea that musicians like Neil are taking initiatives now-a-days regarding their music, it's availability in different formats and doing a good job to keep up (in line?) with the new techs. Especially when the industry is dragging it's feet. Opting instead to lobby gov't for tighter legislation, DRMs or pursue the courts for millions rather than adapt.

It's a great idea and the consideration taken regarding the quality of the components and attention to uses other than just headphones is welcoming. I also like that it isn't itune dependant. I get that some 'convenience' sacrifices have to be made in exchange for quality. But even though the design & shape make sense in that regard, the triangular shape just seems too cumbersome. Especially when the warmer weather come around.

  6. I'm not on Rogers but my friend Geordie is, and I watch a lot of hockey at his place. He's got the bigger TV. I didn't notice it was face offs per se, just that the camera work seemed odd and what appeared late to the play. I shrugged it off as me missing something, or having a flashback.

Disappointed to learn it wasn't a flashback.

  7. He was head writer for SCTV in the beginning (season 1 & 2 1976-78) and was in 28 episodes. SCTV was off air for year and after that Ramis, Candy & O'Hara dropped out. Dave Thomas took over head writer after that.

My favorite character of his on SCTV has always been Moe Green.

Funny fuckin guy that's for sure.

  8. Harold Ramis was one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy filmmakers when he moved his family from Los Angeles back to the Chicago area in 1996. His career was still thriving, with "Groundhog Day" acquiring almost instant classic status upon its 1993 release and 1984's "Ghostbusters" ranking among the highest-grossing comedies of all time, but the writer-director wanted to return to the city where he’d launched his career as a Second City performer.

  9. Nice. Thanks for info & link. I was using unblock-us for a bit, but now-a-days I've just taken a different approach to my downloading - few reasons, but none because of being warned or caught. No more constant d/l'ing, now it's more-less 1 month on, 2 off type of thing, no more massive (200-500gb a month) d/l sessions, careful selection of source(s), no public trackers, (doesn't mean privates are that much safer tho), and basically nothing really major or released within 6 months (games/films etc). In 15 years with same ISP never had as much as warning - doesn't mean I'm immune, just lucky perhaps. regardless, want to keep it that way..lol

Tried to get Teksavvy years ago, but they wouldn't accommodate my area and fortunately my small ISP (flawed as it is at times) dropped d/l caps years ago. If I really want to watch/stream something not available here and not being a big TV/movie watcher anyway I find the the Hola extension (for chrome) covers my needs now.

There's sad news from Wayne County, GA; where yesterday a crew member was killed and seven more crew members were injured during the filming of Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story. The female crew member, a second camera assistant, was killed after she was hit by a freight train which unexpectedly crossed the tracks where yesterday's filming took place.

Variety.com reports "the movie crew was filming a dream sequence on a railroad trestle when a train unexpectedly crossed the bridge. The crew, including director Randall Miller, had placed a bed on the tracks for the scene and was expecting two trains on the local bridge, one in each direction, when a third train arrived unexpectedly. A whistle warned the crew members of the next train, giving them less than a minute, which was too late."

The freight train operator, CSX, issued a statement about the accident, "CSX is deeply saddened by a tragedy that occurred late today on a CSX rail bridge in Doctortown, Ga., and is cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate. A train was en route from Memphis to Savannah when the incident occurred.â€

“All of us on the production team are devastated by the tragic accident that happened today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our crew member," Midnight Rider Productions said in a statement as per Variety.com. The film's producers still intend to continue to film and release the movie according to Deadline.com.

The film is based on Gregg Allman's 2013 autobiography My Cross To Bear and will star Tyson Ritter, William Hurt, Wyatt Russell, Zoey Deutch, Chad Lindberg and Charles S. Dutton.

UPDATE 2/21 11:30 a.m. PT: The Associated Press reports that the film crew did not have permission to film on the tracks. Wayne County Sheriff's detective Joe Gardner told the AP that the film's producers had permission to film on property next to the tracks but not on the tracks themselves.

TORONTO - A Canadian Internet service provider has been ordered to hand over the names and addresses of about 2,000 customers who are alleged to have downloaded movies online.

A Federal Court decision released Thursday compels Ontario-based TekSavvy to identify the customers allegedly linked to downloads of films by the U.S. production company Voltage Pictures, which is behind the likes of "The Hurt Locker," "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Don Jon."

But while the court sided with Voltage's efforts to go after copyright violators, it sought to protect against the company acting "inappropriately in the enforcement of its rights to the detriment of innocent Internet users."

"On the facts of this case, there is some evidence that Voltage has been engaged in litigation which may have an improper purpose. However, the evidence is not sufficiently compelling for this court at this juncture in the proceeding to make any definitive determination of the motive of Voltage," wrote judge Kevin Aalto.

Aalto ordered that before Voltage can send a letter to the alleged downloaders, it must return to court to get the wording of its communications cleared by a case management judge.

"In my view, the order herein balances the rights of Internet users who are alleged to have downloaded the copyrighted works against the rights of Voltage to enforce its rights in those works," Aalto wrote.

"In order to ensure there is no inappropriate language in any demand letter sent to the alleged infringers, the draft demand letter will be provided to the court for review.

"Any correspondence sent by Voltage to any subscriber shall clearly state in bold type that no court has yet made a determination that such subscriber has infringed or is liable in any way for payment of damages."

Updates to the federal Copyright Act in 2012 capped damages for non-commercial copyright infringement at $5,000.

    Interviews

The group's most exotic gig in 1971 was a one-shot in France.

"We went over there to do a big festival, a free festival they were gonna have, but the festival was rained out. It flooded. We stayed at this little chateau which is owned by a film score composer who has a 16-track recording studio built into the chateau, and this is a chateau that Chopin once lived in; really old, just delightful, out in the country near the town of Auvers sure Oise, which is where Vincent Van Gogh is buried. …" Garcia said.

"We were there with nothing to do: France, a 16-track recording studio upstairs, all our gear, ready to play, and nothing to do. So, we decided to play at the chateau itself, out in the back, in the grass, with a swimming pool, just play into the hills. We didn't even play to hippies, we played to a handful of townspeople in Auvers. We played and the people came — the chief of police, the fire department, just everybody. It was an event and everybody just had a hell of a time — got drunk, fell in the pool. It was great."

    --Jerry Garcia--

Some of the Grateful Dead show at Hérouville were broadcast in France by the "The Second Channel" of the ORTF (French Radio and Television Broadcasting) on the July 24, 1971 edition of the rock program "Pop 2"

A second part of the show has been broadcast in Black & White ( don't know why !) on the November 27, 1971.

Audio has been captured in Mono

The interview conducted with Jerry is really interesting but overdubbed in French.

That overlay doesn't allow English speakers to truly hear all that's being said. Of course, if you speak fluent French then you might be able to understand all that Jerry is talking about and all that the translator dude says afterwards.

Btw, if you don't speak a little French : shame on you !

    Audio\Video Faults:

I'm not going to begin to document the massive number of cuts that I found in this amazing video - the POP 2 editors did a fairly good job in most places where the cuts were almost seamless but when compared to the Miller soundboard, large chunks of every song were missing. Morning Dew and Black Peter were left incomplete, however missing footage between existing clips were filled in to allow for the music to flow and short lead-in or lead-out footage was added. The rest of the songs are now complete. I spent almost 40 hours matching the existing video and filler with the intent of making it as close to possible - this was after the time I spent syncing the existing video to the Miller soundboard. I enjoyed and appreciate the original footage supplied by hbtoulouse and have made these modifications with his blessing. I also put the songs in the correct order and moved the Jerry interviews to a seperate section. I only hope you enjoy this as much as I do as it doesn't really get much better than this.

  13. Love this station, and know there are many Pixies fans here - so added that to thread title.

    http://www.king5.com/news/technology/Seattle-radio-station-unveils-new-live-video-streaming-technology-245877871.html

Video may have killed the radio star, but it's become a key audience-building tactic for KEXP, the influential public radio station based in Seattle.

The community-supported station has 200,000 weekly global listeners via terrestrial radio and online. Yet its YouTube channel, filled with taped performances of local and touring bands, boasts more than 1.7 million views a week, with three-fourths of those watching from outside the U.S.

"We're clearly extending worldwide," said KEXP general manager Scott Bell. "The American and worldwide consumer is migrating away from the typical terrestrial radio signal and more toward the electronic and online properties, so we need to be a part of that movement."

Those YouTube numbers are likely to rise. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the radio station will launch a new live video streaming technology with an in-studio performance by pioneering alternative rock band the Pixies. KEXP's technology, powered by state-of-the-art equipment that's come down enough in price to fit the station's budget, has been tweaked for nearly a year, according to video producer Scott Holpainen.

"We've been definitely piecing together equipment that's probably never really been used in this way, in this combination," Holpainen said. "There's been a lot of testing, a lot of trial and error, but we're really pleased with the way that it's all come together."

Live video streaming in HD-quality resolution is the latest chapter in KEXP's story of tech innovation in the radio industry. The station says it was the first to offer CD-quality audio streaming on the internet, and was among the first to offer live performance videos.

"It's just part of the legacy of what KEXP has done, which is innovate and provide listeners with experiences that are very rich."

Holpainen and some work colleagues found the switching equipment and cameras during a visit to the 2013 National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. Even though the cameras don't feature the new 4K resolution standard that was the talk of the recent Consumer Electronics Show, the switcher will support it, "so it's been kind of future-proofed for us."

Holpainen acknowledges that a handful of other radio stations are doing streaming live performances, "but it's more of a broadcast look. We're really trying to replicate what we've been doing for a long time, which is giving things more of a cinematic look. That's been tricky with our limited budget, and we've had to manipulate cameras. But it's fun. It's kind of a puzzle that we're putting together, and having tested it, I think people are going to be pleased with what they see."

Live video is part of KEXP's mission to champion music discovery by taking advantage of digital platforms. Bell added that there's also an opportunity to add to the public radio station's bottom line, but it has to be part of a delicate balancing act.

"One of the jobs we've got here on the business side is how to maximize our revenue, but we're always careful, though, to maintain the curatorial excellence associated with that content," Bell said. "We're reluctant to make it look too commercial. We want to maintain the sensibility of a public radio station."

Holpainen remembers a time when bands weren't very receptive to videos.

"They didn't really understand why we were doing that, and now the bands come in and it's a major priority for them."

The Pixies will perform live in-studio at KEXP at 9:30 a.m. PT Tuesday, Feb. 18th. Go to www.kexp.org to watch.

  14. Just when you thought the Flappy Bird phenomenon couldn’t get any more ridiculous, someone has created a new parody of the game called Flappy Ford.

The parody features Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s pixelated head, a scrolling real-life image of the City of Toronto and blue Mario-like warp pipes.

    flappy ford

    Rob Ford’s head.

Not making Flappy Ford’s warp pipes subway tunnels or TTC street cars/buses, seems like a missed opportunity on the part of the game’s developers. But that probably would have taken some sort of effort, right?

If you happen to fly into a blue pipe, one of Rob Ford’s famous lines play in the background. It’s currently unknown who created the game and Flappy Ford’s website is almost empty and only features the game.

You can try it out at this link right here. Flappy Bird parodies and knockoffs have been popping up everywhere, which is amusing because Flappy Bird is arguably the most successful game clone of all time.

  15. Saw this the other day, not sure if it's helpful for you given your location but figured it's worth sharing anyway.

An Ottawa startup is aiming to give television viewers who want to cut the cord that binds them to traditional content providers the ultimate device: a digital recorder that streams and records programming from dozens of local high-definition stations that are available over the air.

Nuvyyo brought its Tablo personal digital recorder to the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas earlier this year, attracting a lot of attention at a time when consumers are looking for alternatives to cable.

Tablo is a small DVR-like device that plugs into an over-the-air HDTV antenna and transmits the signal to any device that is connected to the Tablo or the internet. This includes iPads and other tablets, smartphones, PCs and televisions that outfitted with Apple TV or Google Chromecast.
