They are also excited to have "TMDP" in the mix - a Toronto laptop duo who have been steadily building buzz all year. Tickets selling fast to the show, make sure you get yours right away!! Never a group to be pigeonholed, Lotus brings many musical weapons to the stage. From festival stages such as Rothbury, Wakarusa, Evolve and Red Rocks to theaters across the country, the band has left grinning crowds dripping with sweat. Equal parts dance and rock, Lotus has been crafting a unique brand of instrumental rock for the past decade. Their latest release Oil on Glass/Feather on Wood “proves that no words are needed to elicit any feelings, the instrumentals alone are enough to connote a myriad of emotions.†The dual EPs show the multiple sides of Lotus with Feather on Wood showcasing slow-building guitar driven compositions and Oil on Glass leaning toward harder beats and textures. Like a Lotus show, the two sides work together to form a cohesive whole. The big light show and pounding beats may be club inspired, but the band’s ability to connect with the audience through emotive composition and dynamic improvisation pushes performances past the elusive barrier dividing concert and experience. 4. They've been in the studio and they've been doing runs out West. The last Toronto, Hamilton and Waterloo shows were dismal last time, and it didn't seem for lack of trying. It was a couple weeks after the PJC close and the timing wasn't the best to accept the jam at the Casbah. Now that these guys are a little bit older they can't just sleep on floors and play to a couple people. They likely won't be back to Ontario until they have a new product. Keep the faith JSB is here to stay.
  5. I met Rick at a Hawks show when I was in high school. I got a chance to talk to him for a little bit, but our conversation got cut off when a brawl broke out in the bar. Much later when I was touring in a band, we played at the Red Dog in Peterborough and I met a young guitar player from Arkansas who was visiting Ronnie Hawkins. He told me the story that he was told about Ricks final days. He basically came home from a tour of Japan and parties for many days straight at Hawkins' house and the years of abuse caught up with him. I'm a huge fan - RIP Rick!
  6. Watch out for a big 2010 for The Jimmy Swift Band!!
  7. Check out this email I just found out on the Upstream Messageboard. Got it rattling in my brain how much I need to bust ass on promoting these upcoming shows in Toronto. Get a hold of me if you want to get involved in bring out the music fans for the New Deal, King Sunshine & Burt Neilson Band. The live music fabric of Toronto can be a real fickle market - definitely need the support of the troops on these ones - let me know if you are interested in helping with passing out flyers, spreading the word on facebook, putting up posters, getting tickets to people or any other ideas! email me at jay@nufunk.ca thanks! 8. Thanks for those typo clarifications AD, the spaces happened by just dropping the text in the forum. Abe was a real person and those Northern Heads times were so funny - I think the whole idea was to get people talking and stirring up the scene and I think although some people didn't get the sarcasm (some of it biting) the idea was really to help propel the scene by criticizing it. Abe later ended up in a very bad accident, not sure the whole story - but from what I heard he spent at least a month in the hospital recovering...

  10. how's this: http://www.nufunk.ca presents... Saturday, December 19th, 2009 Burt Neilson Band (Toronto, ON) The Fat Cats (Hamilton, ON) plus Gratefully Deadicated Soundsystem Opera House - 735 Queen St. E Doors 9:30 PM Show 10:00 PM $15 Advance / $20 at the door Tickets available in Toronto at Soundscapes, Rotate This, Play De Record, Shanti Baba and in Hamilton at Where Heads Meet Online at http://www.ticketweb.ca There’s little room for debate: The Burt Neilson Band (BNB) are Canada’s pre-eminent jamband. A double edged label at best- most often used by rock writers as a pejorative and followed by adjectives like ‘wanky’ and descriptions of audience members ‘noodle dancing’- most bands still would die for the loyalty particularly in terms of live shows that this band has engendered in their over thirteen year career. Having formed in Thunder Bay in 1996 as a seven piece band, Burt Neilson Band gradually pared down to an airtight, turn on a dime, four piece ensemble. With over 1,000 live shows under their belt they’ve honed their chops and sound beyond their youthful dabblings with crowd pleasing versions of rock, soul and funk grooves. While one can still count on their live show to delve at any moment into looser improvisations their songwriting has showed a steadfast growth in both style and substance. The fact that journalists get hung up on the label doesn’t seem to matter at all to the band members influential group of peers- the fellow musicians they would have themselves judged by. Not surprisingly veteran sideman (vocals/keyboards/organ/accordion) Jeff Heisholt tours extensively with the Trews who will admit that when they were underage they’d sneak into BNB’s legendary shows in their hometown of Antigonish, NS. Bassist Jeremy Little (in addition to his own project Everything All The Time) was plucked for Jason Collett’s backing band when the remnants of Paso Mino scattered to the winds and Zeus was formed. Drummer Gavin Maguire likewise plays in a handful of ensembles ranging from their cohort Pete Elkas’ band to Rodriguez (formerly know as Bodega) to Dearly Beloved. Meanwhile guitarist and songwriter Mike Filipowitsch has been focusing on his solo material. In addition to completing a cross Canada solo acoustic tour, Mike has been in the studio with producer Chris Wardman (Tragically Hip, Randy Bachman ) on Billy Manzik's latest release "Alltogether Now" (2009), and continues to collaborate on projects with a variety of musicians forwarding his own solo career. On Saturday December 19th the Burt Neilson Band carry on a tradition of reuniting for their extended fanbase with a holiday show accompanied by fellow travelers Fat Cats (another group with a storied connection to their fans) and the Gratefully Deadicated Sound System. 13. Do Right! & NuFunk Present Thursday Dec 3, 2009 THE 'PARKDALE' FOODBANK HOLIDAY JAM featuring Live performance by Jessica Stuart and guests The Drake Underground, 1150 Queen Street West. 9pm start free with non perishable food donation. All proceeds + food donations go to the Parkdale Community Food Bank http://www.jessicastuartmusic.com http://www.myspace.com/jessicastuartfew ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About The Parkdale Food Bank ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In 2007, The Parkdale Community Food Bank was on the verge of collapse as the King & Dufferin St. operation had been slowly loosing support from its funding sources. When the story hit the front page of The Toronto Star, it was Toronto's music community that first came to the rescue. Blue Rodeo, Big Rude Jake and The Gypsy Rebels were among the many Toronto groups that took part in organizing fundraising and food drives which helped keep the vital organization alive. What struck Robert Thorpe, Executive Director of the Parkdale Food Bank, the most was that many of musicians who performed at the benefit told him that the cause hit very close to home as they had once upon a time turned to the food bank for support. With charitable donations down and the winter coming quickly, demand on the centres resources are anticipated to increase dramatically. There's already been a 25-30% increase in membership since last November and what makes the situation more alarming is that the donations they received from the Daily Food Bank (the umbrella organization that helps many of the food banks in Toronto) have been cut in half. Community based food drive initiatives the centre have undertaken have been modest and the center are looking to community partners for ideas and new initiatives.
  14. here's what we used for their 10 year anniversary! It was Halloween 1996 in Thunder Bay, Ontario where The BURT NEILSON BAND first took to the stage. Ten years, almost 1,000 shows and 20 cross-Canada tours later, The Burt Neilson Band have risen to Canadian cult status, building a loyal and dedicated fanbase from coast to coast. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary on November 10th at the Opera House, Burt Neilson Band is planning a "Last Waltz" style show with the help of their friends; former Burt Neilson Band Members, plus members of Caution Jam, Fat Cats, Peter Elkas Band and many others...) BIO Formed in 1996 in frosty Thunder Bay, Ontario, BURT NEILSON BAND is a four-piece group simply in love with music. Consisting of bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and vocals, BNB thrives on live performances filled with creativity and spontaneity. The band, in their ten year career, have toured Canada coast to coast eighteen times, played over eight hundred shows, had four successful independent releases, and secured an army of loyal and devoted fans. With an original lineup of seven, BNB have refined their sound over the years to be more focused, clean and in tune with the moment. Mike Filipowitsch (guitar/vocals), Jeff Heisholt (keyboards/vocals), Jeremy Little (bass/vocals) and Gavin Maguire (drums/vocals) do their best to create music from the heart, drawing heavily from their backgrounds of rock n' roll, funk, country and life. The road has been good to Burt Neilson Band. They've been lucky enough to play across Canada and the USA, logging countless hours of van time and stage experience. From their beginnings in Northern Ontario, the band quickly branched out to spread their music to as many people as possible. One cross country tour suddenly turned into a dozen and before they knew it, BNB found themselves veterans of the highway and leaders of a new resurgence of independent Canadian touring bands. Consistently selling out rooms across the country and basically living on the road became the norm for Burt Neilson. So in 2002 the band decided to take a year off, settle down and get ready for another long stretch of writing, performing and recording. The band emerged from hibernation in early 2003 and received the "COCA – 2003 Indie Band of the Year" award, played high profile gigs at the Evolve Festival, Come Together Music Festival, Yellowknife Folk Festival and many others... Burt Neilson Band first entered the recording studio in 1997. Although throughout their years they have encouraged the taping and trading of their live shows, 1998 saw the release of the self-titled 'Burt Neilson Band'. Recorded in Thunder Bay, the CD featured 10 of the band's first compositions and went on to sell out of many pressings. BNB followed that with 2000's 'Orange Shag Carpet', which featured more mature writing and showcased the musical growth of the band. 2001 brought the release of 'Five Alive', a live CD recorded while on tour in Ontario that March. It featured one song from each previous release as well as six new originals and clocked in at 74 minutes. The band released their fourth CD, "By the Door" in February 2004, and are currently preparing new material for their next release.
