  2. Dude was a damn fine songwriter. Nirvava drove me nuts in high school because you couldn't get away from them (and I was too into trying to collect Dead Summer tour 1982 or something to care) but in retrospect I realize what an enormous talent he was. A great loss and an important man.

  3. fyi - I pulled this off the New Deal mailing list regarding Darren Shearer's new project. I guess Jamie Shields was the guest last week:

    HQers,

Thought this may be of interest...

Darren's lined up a Thursday residency in Toronto at a new bar called "The Harmony Lounge" on College Street, home to a dope martini menu and no cover charge.

Darren will have different guests every Thursday, drawing on some of the best players in Toronto. From time to time, you may see some familiar faces on stage.

They'll be going on at around 9:45pm, and playing two sets until 1am-ish.

They're booked for the next 3 Thursdays, will take a couple weeks off, then roll with it consistently throughout the spring and into summer.

What are they going to be playing? In Darren's words:

"This will be a new approach for me. I am using a half acoustic, and half electronic kit, and the band will be concentrating on super chill atmospheric layering, break beats, and other subdued approaches. It is completely improv, and will be structured on the spot. It should be very cool."

  4. Well, I'm not trying to be nasty, I'm just having some fun. Please don't take me too seriously in these debates. I'd be happy to crank up some Jimi - or some high-end Lennon - at any time.

Let me be clear: Hendrix was one of my first musical loves. I collected quite a few bootleg vinyl LPs and live tapes, worked my way through his catalogue, studied his life and works, saw the video footage, loved it. Some of the first tunes I learned to play on guitar were Little Wing and Angel. But I guess I am a little tired of his being propped up as the be-all and end-all of influential guitarists, and I do think his legacy has been largely propped up by classic rock culture, largely to the detriment of other great guitarists. I think we need to challenge these assumptions from time to time but there is no doubt Jimi's influence extends farther than Jerry's.

Still, after Miles got booted off this time, any concept I had of retaining influence over personal preference went out the window. Given my druthers, Jerry would have been booted off before Miles, Elvis or Johnny but here we are: Jimi vs. Jerry.

Jerry gets my support because he didn't supernova and die (too) young like Jimi. He left a larger body of work behind that - while it may only largely be the concern of Deadheads at this point - will one day be seen in the bigger picture as a phenonemanally high level of quality and generous output. He was in a sense the closest rock and roll ever got to a Miles Davis (hah!). Nevermind his A+ songwriting, which will be reinterpreteted for hundreds of years, in true folk tradition.

No doubt Garcia was completely blown away by Hendrix (esp @ Monterey) but he rarely demonstrated a direct influence in his playing. I prefer passion and a slow-burn to pyrotechnics and a supernova. And, as paisley pointed out, Garcia possessed an agile mind and endless curiosity that would make him better company on the island. Hendrix would just break open your tylenol capsules and try to find a couple of sisters to get it on with, leaving you to sit there and beat it.

But let me repeat my mantra: DOWN WITH CLASSIC ROCK CULTURE! it's not good for music.

Right, it's bad enough you voted Miles Davis off (hang your heads in shame you sick, stinky wookies!) - I mean the guy only reshuffled and INVENTED entire musical genres like 300 times and was one of the finest horn players to ever live - but now you've voted off Johnny Cash?!?! In favour of JIMI "PURPLE HAZE" HENDRIX?!?!?!? The guy who wrote I Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire gets booted off in favour a freak in drag setting his guitar on fire?!?!? The guy who wrote Dolly Fucking Dagger???? Jesus Fuck! You all should be arrested and forced to listen to Jim "Do You Wanna See My Dick?" Morrison reciting poetry for the rest of your patch-work pant-wearing lives.

Hey Jimi - shuffle off the island and go join the other losers in your 60's drenched Axis Of Bad Acid Trips: Joplin & Morrison. At least you all had the decency to drug and drink yourselves off the planet before you turned thirty so you could have a little legacy for the burnt-out boomers to perpetuate for the next million years. Those three albums you made are excellent and all but let's face it, you're no Johnny Cash, or Miles Davis.

Honestly, I would have voted Jerry off long ago had the universe unfloded as it should and we'd be deciding between Miles and Elvis now instead of Jimi and Jerry. Now, where's my lava lamp, my valium and my copy of Band of Gypsys???

This game is bad for my blood pressure. ::

  6. 1) Location - I like that I can be close to Toronto for big and/or interesting shows and stuff and not live there. Just an hour (and a bit) away from the US border. I like that if I want to get lost on the trails, there's plenty of rural space right outside of town (Dundas, Ancaster, Flamborough, Cambridge areas).

    2) It's Real! No joke, Hamilton is not the place to put on airs or get all "cosmopolitan". It's dirty, gritty, ugly and full of soul. Viva La Hammer!

    3) paisley

    4) my particular neighborhood (Locke area) is full of freindly Scanks: Willy, hamilton (he lives downstairs from me for chrissakes!), shainhouse, kc, sarahbelle, timmyb and probably a couple of others I'm blanking out on now.

    5) we get great shows here thanks to our local crew of heroic promoters and Pepper Jacks, in particular.

  7. Please don't take this the wrong way but some of you twisted fucktards should have your ears cut off and fed to angry, hungry pitbulls. And your genitals too so your unborn children won't have to suffer having parents with no ears.

Again, nothing personal. Have a nice day!
