I just finished reading The Soloist by Steve Lopez. It's a true story about a black musician and paranoid schizophrenic. I enjoyed the book a lot, as it provides much insight into mental illness, living on the streets, and the power of music. Apparantly it is being made into a movie which is scheduled to be released soon.
Has anybody else read the book?

Here is an interview from 2001 with Kai Eckhart that I just finished reading. He's got a wonderful perspective on music and life!

OK, I've finally put my brain back together after Friday night and let me say "wow, that was some mind-blowing musicianship!" Those guys can play, and I totally enjoyed watching and listening as they go places that few bands do. It was definitely very intense and "notey" at times, and as a result I spent more time watching and listening than dancing, but wow, talk about brilliant musical chops.

Facebook message from Ken at PJC:
Halloween Party tonight ... is going to be insane! Garaj Mahal is a sick sick band and you know the Fat Cats always deliver!!
Advance Tickets are still available at pepper jack's or dr disc until 5pm.
Tickets will then be available at the door when they open at 9pm but not a lot so don't wait till the last minute if you can. We "might" sell out.
Have a safe and happy Halloween whatever you do,

It's a wah, it's a volume, it's an envelope filter. It's made in Sweden and I think I want one.
Anybody ever play any of these?
No, but I'd love to try one out! Now that EBS has a Canadian distributor (L & M) maybe that will be possible.

Wished I could have been there, but life is just too busy these days to be making a mid-week trek to Toronto for a show. Nice to read that it was awesome and amazing ... I would expect nothing less from David Byrne.

Fatties are to go on by ten on friday, and off stage by eleven. So arrive early if you can folks! That should leave us with plenty of time to get a good groove on to Garaj Mahal!! Really been looking forward to checking them out!
I definitely don't want to miss the Fatties, so count on me being there by 10. Stoked!

Happy birthday Sharon! If you haven't visited the message board this morning then I don't even need to use the word belated in my best wishes!

seriously..... Garaj Mahal is playing in Ottawa!
I wish I could make the run to Ottawa for the Saturday night show, but no such luck. The same goes for tonight's show in Toronto. I'll have to pack it all into one night in Hamilton! Thank you to everyone who has played a part in bringing this band to Ontario ... it certainly has been a long time coming!

I'm stoked for Friday night in Hamilton ... now I just need to come up with a costume idea and pull it together ... it will be quick and easy ... you can count on it!

I just got a phone call from Chris Mulligan ... he is sick and won't be playing tonight at the Boathouse after all.
I'll make a few calls as well to let people know.

Chris Mulligan is playing in Kitchener at the Boathouse in Victoria Park tomorrow (Friday) night. He's part of a 3 act showcase, and he'll be going on last, starting at around midnight. It's $10 at the door. I'll be joining him on bass for some of his set.

Great looking photos! What a wicked idea ... very creative! I had a chance to see and hear jayr's suitcase amp a while back when we jammed together, and I was very impressed with the look and sound. Very cool!

... Bottom line is I want someone in power that adds to my Canadian pride. When I travel internationally I always feel great when someone mentions how they wish their country was more like Canada...
Well said Todd - thanks for taking the time to say it.
Enjoy your bike ride.

I added the band's name to the thread title ... hopefully that helps.
Gary Burke certainly does have an impressive list of performers he's recorded and toured with! Bob Dylan. Joe Jackson. Graham Parker. Plus he was he drummer/percussionist at Radio City Music Hall for 4 years. Very cool.

That's a good question. I don't see anything on ticketweb.ca yet. Hopefully we'll get an update soon. Maybe they're all sold out already?
According to
advance tickets for the Oct. 30 Toronto Garaj Mahal show (which apparently has The Chameleon Project opening up) will be on sale starting Oct. 7. I'd assume hope that advance tickets for the other shows would also be on sale on that date.

Advance tickets for the Hamilton show are definitely available at The Pepper Jack Cafe. I know because I bought some the last time I was in Hamilton. I'm stoked ... it's going to be a fun night!
