  1. whoever holds the mortgage, usually "the bank".

    Here's my take on it:

The bank lends somebody money to buy a house, with no money down.

The person who "buys" the house can't make the mortgage payments, and eventually abandons the home.

The home depreciates in value because the housing market is falling and because the home has become run down after being neglected and/or abandoned.

The bank now "owns" the home, but it's worth less than it was before, and they can't find anybody to buy it. In a number of cases, the bank doesn't even want to own the home because the cost of cleaning it up, making it safe, and paying taxes is more than the house is even worth. From what I understand, there are legal battles happening in parts of the US because the banks actually don't want to own certain homes because they are then liable for taxes, cleanup costs, and any harm done to people (squatters) hurt inside. Cities are going to court to force the banks to "own" and deal with these homes.

And people, pension and investment managers, etc. have invested via the banks in these worthless properties. What a mess!

And that's only the housing side of it, which I sort of understand from the reading I've done. Some of the other investment situations out there are much more complex and difficult to understand. In some cases, it's because they don't really make sense, as people are using credit and other people's money in ridiculously risky ways. It makes me appreciate my grandfather's reluctance to use credit and to pay cash for everything.

    What a mess.

  2. Bravo to you Allison for the incredible amount of energy you put into this festival. It was refreshing to see somebody from this community step up to the plate with such a vision. I wish I could have been at the festival, but I was committed to a family holiday that was booked many months ago. It's unfortunate that you encountered some serious curve balls with this event. Given your level of commitment and passion, I'm confident that things will work out positively for you in the end. Stay strong and keep truckin' on ...

  3. Thanks for setting up this gig geomouse ... Chris and I both had a blast going with the flow and jamming with you and Jay. And I enjoyed both your acoustic set and the acoustic bluegrassy set by Tooly and Jay. And yes, it was a treat packing up while Tooly played a few songs by The Band for us at the end of the night. I'd love to do it again at some point.

    Peace, Mark

  4. Ned Wreck, aka Geomouse, is hosting a music night this Wednesday August 20th in Sauble Beach at Greenhorns. I'll be doing some playing with Ned Wreck, and with Chris Mulligan. From what I know, Tooly and some friends will also be playing. So if you are in the area on Wednesday night, come on out for some live music and some fun times! The music starts at around 9 pm.

  5. a well-timed bomb threat would do the trick. that would buy mark at least a day or two :P

    Good call Timouse.

Mark what do you think? Don't say "yes" or "no". Seeing as your username on here is Mark Tonin' date=' we don't want them tracing anything back to you if they investigate. So just nod your head in a yes or no direction and I will proceed accordingly.[/quote']

You guys make me smile and laugh!!! :)

  6. Very cool ... it looks like the tour will be in support of the latest Eno/Byrne collaboration, and will focus on the new release and on previous Eno/Byrne music. From David Byrne's web site:

"Brian Eno and I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years. For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It's familiar but completely new as well. We're pretty excited. The name of the new record is Everything That Happens Will Happen Today and the music will be available on this Web site on August 18th, free for streaming and available for purchase as both a download and in physical formats.

In September I will begin a tour, on which I will be playing music from the new album as well as music from our previous collaborations - 3 Talking Heads albums, Bush of Ghosts, etc."

    Peace, Mark

  7. Mr Something Something was great but there was a problem with the bass, or should I say the bass was missing almost entirely that distracted me too much

I agree that there was almost no bass in the mix, which was unfortunate. I compensated for that by closing my eyes and imagining the bass. Seriously.

On another note, one thing that always impresses me about Hillside is the food. Tasty, tasty food. Plus there is free drinking water. And clean portable toilets. And cool workshops. And stuff to do with kids. It's a very family friendly festival.

    Peace, Mark
