  1. Deeps gave me a What The Thunder Said disc at the May Come Together Fest, and I like a lot of what's on it. More rocky than jazzy/funk in my opinion, but still tasty. :)

Hopefully I'll get a chance to check 'em out live in the not-too-distant future.

And it's excellent that Jomomma is still playing and creating new music ... they are currently recording their 3rd studio cd if I'm not mistaken.

    Peace, Mark

  2. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3

    The Word

Wow. I'm impressed. You managed to get Medeski and the boys up here for a CTMF? That's going to draw a few people out. ;)

Chuckle chuckle ... I'm sure that Del will be impressed! :);)

Seriously though, The Word playing at the Labour Day fest is not Medeski's The Word ... it's another band by the same name.

The thought of a band called Freekbass playing on the Saturday night of the festival has me grinning from ear to ear, and if their web site is any indication of what we're in for, it's going to be a raging dance party on Saturday Sept. 3 at Izzy's!

    Peace, Mark

  3. I'm stoked for the Labour Day Come Together Fest at Izzy's ... it's going to be another excellent event! Here is the lineup and preliminary schedule for the main stage at the Labour Day Come Together Music Festival. Peace, Mark

  4. some people call me a bad pickle.

i may be soft' date=' but i sure am sour.

    ahahahahahahahah

    Ditto ... that was hilarious!

The Freakers Ball at Izzy's is shaping up to be an excellent party. My understanding is that the Saturday night (August 6th) will include Harvard Mouse, Rose Garland, and Errol Blackwood. From what I gather, Rose Garland is going to get lots of stage time, so if you like dancing to the Dead and want to do so under the stars while remembering Jerry, be at Izzy's on Sat. August 6th. And get ready for a trippy light show in addition to the music!

    Peace, Mark

  5. bradm ... your posts make me smile and laugh on a regular basis ... thanks for that and for the post above, as I now have a big grin on my face.

MarcO ... thanks for the kind words!

Sunshine, I agree, there never seems to be enough time to connect with everybody. So much great music, so many wonderful people, and not enough time. And yes, we didn't get to dance together, but at least I got to see that smiling face of yours, which radiates positive energy in a huge way! :) :)

Schwa ... keep on working on those Tonin dance moves! :);):)

    Peace, Mark

  6. "That was the best surprise I've ever had for someone else's birthday!"

Jay ... running into you and Kate at the entrance to Bluesfest is another great example of our "trippy sense of timing" during that day. It was a treat to see the two of you ... sorry we couldn't spend more time together ... I look forward to connecting with you again.

Tim, Dave and Deb ... once again, it is awesome that the three of you have found your way onto this message board and into this community of wonderful people ... I've known the three of you for 10 + years, and I look forward to many more shared experiences and magical musical moments with the three of you.

Kaidy Mae, what can I say, you're positive energy continues to shine through in a big way! Hope to see you soon.

Paisley, it's been a while my friend, hope to see you soon, thanks for the birthday wishes!

Willy ... thanks again ... I always have the best of times when I'm with you ... looking forward to the next time!

    Peace, Mark

  7. Thanks to Wi!!ly and Chris for making the Toronto > Ottawa BSC road trip with me last week ... it was a wonderful way for me to celebrate my birthday!

Thanks to all of the wonderful people that I connected with in Toronto and Ottawa. Once again, I was overwhelmed at times at how many freakin' awesome people that I have met over the last 4 years at shows and via the sanctuary. Words cannot describe how fortunate I feel to be a part of this community.

    Personal highlights:

    - Keller!

    - surprising some people by showing up in Ottawa relatively unannounced ... surprises are fun!

    - our trippy sense of timing ... on our journey we somehow managed to magically arrive at places just at the right time ... the best example was stepping into a cab just as the rain started to fall in buckets in Ottawa

    - Burt ... wow!

    Personal lowlight:

    - the last part of the road trip back to Hamilton from Ottawa ... you'd think after 41 years I'd have figured out what "moderation" means!

    ;):)

Peace, love and hugs to all of my friends,

    Mark

  8. I had a great time at the Toronto BSC ... thank you to the promoters!

My personal highlight in Toronto was watching Keller Williams do his thing ... I was up close for his set in Toronto (and Ottawa) and watching him put it all together is lots of fun ... he's got great stage presence. I managed to find a spot to watch him where I could see his facial expressions and still have room to dance.

Although it was an indoor event, it definitely still had a festival feel to it, with two stages, a place to hang outside with a great view of the city & the lake, a pool, and a relaxed vibe. A number of times I saw musicians from the different bands wondering around inside and out.

Well done to all of those involved in making the Toronto BSC happen.

    Peace, Mark

  9. I spoke with Mark Wilson yesterday and he told me that there is definitely a Come Together Music Festival at Izzy's on Labour Day Weekend (Sept. 2, 3 & 4).

A few people that I saw at the Toronto Big Summer Classic told me that they heard a rumour that the Labour Day weekend wasn't happening. This rumour is not true!

Be sure to visit the Come Together Fest web site for information about the Labour Day festival. There is some lineup info posted, and additional information will be added in the near future.

    Peace, Mark

  10. Do not miss the first set though: I find the first set is the dancing, partying kind of funk and the second set is so sexy that you'll be scanning the room for someone to throw down on a table and make love to.

Wi!!y, thanks for a big smile and laugh on a sunny Sunday afternoon! Time to head back outside for some more of this glorious summer weather!

    Peace, Mark

  11. "I'm going to come out of the closet here."

Thanks for coming out of the closest kyebay, and for bring such a huge show to Toronto. I'm looking forward to a fantastic show on Tuesday at the Docks. Yes we won't be outside on the island for this show, which would have been sweet, but we are still lucky that we don't have to cross the border to see a show of this caliber. It is going to be sweet, and the sound system at the Docks is great. There is also lots of room at the Docks to sit back and enjoy the patio, with a great view of the Toronto skyline.

Umphrey's is certainly getting lots of hype these days, and many people are stoked about seeing them for the first time (myself included). Many had hoped that they would be playing later on, but it's tough to please everyone.

Looking forward to a fabulous day!

    Peace, Mark

  12. Was this already posted? Did I miss this?

I just went to the Big Summer Classic web site to find out more about Toronto Island, how to get there, etc. (I've never been there before) and I noticed that the venue has been changed to the Docks. Here is the info from the BSC web site:

"Toronto BIG Summer Classic on July 12 Moves to The Docks

Due to the threat of job action by city workers and the potential of transportation interruptions to Olympic Island, the Big Summer Classic Toronto show on July 12 is being moved to The Docks Concert Theatre on Polson Pier (at 11 Polson St.). All tickets for the Olympic Island show will be honored at the door, and a refund for transport fees will be available to all ticket holders.

We think this change is great news. BIG patrons will have access to the whole Polson Pier site which includes an outdoor pool, driving range, volleyball courts, soccer pitch, carnival rides, and many other amenities. The venue features a waterfront location, accessible by public transit, with water fountains, public showers, tons of parking (with overnighting OK), reasonably-priced food concessions (much cheaper than the island). The show itself will now run later into the evening, with the brand new "Next Level" 2nd floor area of the venue, complete with retractable roof, offering an unparalleled view of the city while enjoying the show. Now that’s BIG!"

Should be loads of fun at the Docks ... I especially like the idea of being able to park overnight there!

    Peace, Mark

  13. "remember Instrumental Illness from MolsAmph Summer 03?"

This was definitely the highlight of the '03 Toronto ABB show for me ... Instrumental Illness is a great song, and the drum jam that accompanied it was mind-blowing.

Maybe I was seeing things, but with the ABB, it's not a two person drum jam, but a three person affair, including percussionist Marc Quinones. Read about Marc Q. here:

    link to Marc Q bio

The Dead, Mickey & Bill ... I've always thoroughly enjoyed the live drumz & space experience ... it's refreshing to hear musicians exploring and trying to reach beyond existing musical boundaries ... I don't usually enjoy listening to a recording of it though.

    Peace, Mark

  14. Once upon a time, there was a man named Joseph Tonin and a woman named Marie Macoretta. They fell in love and eventually got married and became Mr. and Mrs. Tonin. A year later, they had their first child, a son, and they named him Mark ... Mark Tonin. At this point in the story, I think that you can probably guess where my username comes from. :)

When I first signed up for this board, back when it was part of Phish Sanctuary, I was just trying to keep things simple. I have a hard enough time remembering names, passwords, etc. and I didn't want to add any extra names to the mix.

Over the years I've been called Tony, Toenails, Markus, Mr. T., Marky T., Marktangular, arkmouse, and I'm sure a bunch of other things by people that I've pissed off.

One thing that makes me smile about my username is that when I see people at shows, they'll call me by my username ... "Hey mark tonin, how's it going?" That still makes me giggle, as it's rare that people address me by my full name at work or in other situations.

    Peace, Mark

  15. "Was there not a Tennessee Jed in there?"

If I remember correctly, the Tennessee Jed was sandwiched in the middle of Dixie Chicken. Actually, I think that there were some other things in that Dixie Chicken sandwich as well.

"they jammed spanish moon into skin it back"

This was one of the highlights of the show for me, along with the Dixie Chicken and the Feats Don't Fail Me Now encore.

"They are so tight after all these years, and although they play the same songs over and over, they find ways to keep the jams fresh."

I agree - I've seen the band three times in the last three years, and I think they've been better each time. The jams last night were hot!

There was a good crowd out for the Toronto show, hopefully people in Montreal and Ottawa will make it out to check out the band, as they are definitely worth checking out.

    Peace, Mark
