  1. replace how? no longer existing? replaced with other v/t/b knobs in their place? replace with an entire new v/t/b system that does the same thing but doesn't intrude the body (like the Fishman Matrix Infinity)? Gawpo Giggles *** regardless of what you desire, yes, it can be done
  2. Brad: yes, it can be done. the method you are assuming (that of adding wood into the cavity) is indeed the route one would take. I would also add dowling inserts into the body and patch, and epoxy it to ensure that no shifting takes place. from that, colour and lacquer touch-ups are your final step. I would not recommend it be done by a novice as the patch should fit without any gaps to ensure no future movement from the string pressure, which could cause any number of issues like lacquer checking, intonation troubles from a shifting bridge etc... 3. Thanks...I've been very fortunate to get the opportunity to work with the people I have/do...but I worked hard for it...the Hungarians in particular were a very strong minded, disciplinary pair to work with. :content: From what I can gather, we have a couple folks on this board to help with the field of luthierie and PabloSanchez is a plethora of information on the 6 string and all things related to her... 4. At present I am just beginning building myself 2 tele style instruments...aside from having built myself a solid-body guitar (a lefty strat..."the Rathocaster") back in my teens with my uncles help, all my work has been on electric & acoustic fretted instrument repair, acoustic fretted instrument construction and non-fretted instrument repair... At my last place of employment, where I worked as a luthier 6 days a week for 5 years, I would have only one day to do the repairs for my fretted instrument clients. This establishment is world renowned and as such I was fortunate to see some of the finest instruments ever made...Stradivari, Guarneri, Guadagnini, Maggini...unfortunately, it put my mind in a snooty thought being around this type of people and I had to get out. After I left I did work for about a year from my home workshop on violins for the house but I have been trying to shift my movements towards working with easier people (basically not classical violinists high-brow type) and focus mainly on archtop guitar construction. I also presently do the guitar repairs for Hofner Canada and am one of the luthiers involved in the revamp of the ROGER guitar project. ROGER guitars were hand made in Germany during the 50's era. The luthier; Wenzel Rossmeisl was the gentleman involved in designer the Rickenbacker guitars and some Fender flat tops as well. These are all ORIGINAL ROGER's that were never finished; thats where I come in. Some have damage, as they are more than 50 years in age and aired such... They will be BEAUTIFUL when finished... 5. I'm a tele-whore...when the time comes; pick away... Gawpo Giggles
  6. Well, I'm from the Ottawa Valley as most folks here know and I make it back every now and then...we're not sure if we're going to look into dealers yet as we don't want to really make these in large numbers...never our want or intention, but we may go with a few select shops and do mainly direct sales... I may be bringing a few instruments with me that way en route to the Montreal Guitar Show...other than that, some of the endorsed "cGc" players will certainly be in the Capital with their instruments in the near future... Gawpo Giggles
  7. As we're just starting out, we've taken the time to hand select our endorsed players and we've been very lucky to have had nothing but positive feedback and all folks on board for a co-operative effort to get these players the instrument they always wanted...with some stipulations, we may be looking into more players to endorse in the future... As for the U.S Lakland's, this is directly from the website: Lakland US basses - and all their components - are made in the US. ""Bodies and necks are cut by machine"", but everything else is done by hand, including fretting. This is what makes me scratch my head about players buying the U.S made instruments...according to Lakland's website, the U.S & skyline bodies and neck are identical but one is cut on a CNC machine in America and the other in Japan...is a U.S CNC machine more accurate than a Japanese CNC machine? So much so that the instrument "made" in the U.S is more than double that of the Japanese made? There are many factors that result in a poorer quality instrument coming from overseas, but I am not of the opinion that it is because they are "in general" lesser skilled craftspersons... Gawpo Giggles
  8. Thanks Punky...I'm sure at some time I'll be on the coast with a "cGc" bass in hand for you to destroy with them deeply sweet Punk-Bombs Gawpo Giggles
  9. Well Mark, the thing is, there isn't any of these lower-priced good quality made basses out there cause bassist are paying these set high prices for them; why would "makers" lower them? Roger Sadowsky was never really a guitar or bass MAKER but a highly skilled and respected repairman. When he started "making", he tried using the help of Dana Bourgeois and they couldn't figure it out...so he searched and searched for someone to do it right and he ended up in Japan. Likewise, Dan Lakin was never a MAKER either but a guy who fixed up broken old basses and would re-sell them. The guy down the road from him did a nice re-fret and together they took some measurements of basses they've liked over the years and had someone make them a bass and off they went to NAMM... What is easier is pointing you to the direction of someone making an instrument entirely by hand that is on a price comparison of the cookie-cutter American Lakin... I expect in about 4 months the first 6 solid body basses and guitars will be available from my company. Although we are building these for our first group of endorsed players, the same appointments will be available to the public: -AAA solid S-Ash or Alder bodies (2 pieces) -AAA veneered body tops (flamed or quilted maple) -AAA Birdseye maple necks -Highest grade Ebony for the non maple fingerboards -Custom made Lindy Fralin pick-ups -Various bridge options (hip-shot, badass etc etc) -Various tuner options -Hard-shell case -$1750+taxes = under $2000 Canadian Gawpo Giggles
  10. As a professional luthier, I have a VERY tough time in even relating these prices to a cookie-cutter made instrument but the fact is; the bass playing public supports these prices... At present, I am in works with the same Japanese factory that worked with the Buscarino made gigmaster guitars (basically one of the top private workshops in Japan) and all I can say is Sadowsky and Lakland and making a KILLING...I'm only dealing with production of 6 instruments and putting price-tags like Sadowsky/Lakland (skyline) would have me at...ready...well over a 500% profit PER INSTRUMENT...and these guys are ordering a hell of a lot more than 6 instruments at a time...lots of 30 is what Lakand is doing...the other funny thing is; the big shops don't even get the Japanese Master's making the instruments. When I contacted them about what I do (in the eyes of the European standards of lutherie (the ONLY standards of luthier) I am consider a Master Luthier...not many in North America are; the standards don't exist here)and the thought of getting something small going like what Buscarino did with the "gigmaster", they got me directly in touch with their head Master stating that as I was one as well, I would not be happy with the quality they produce for their larger customers...included in this was parts made for Gibson, Hofner, Fender, D'Aquisto and I'm about 95% sure the Lakland S... I have 4 "Dusty Hill" Tele style Basses ordered from clients and after discussing the thought of trying this Japanese route out (with them saving some obvious coin) with them, I think we're gonna give it a go...I'll still be fretting and finishing th instruments here as well as doing the electronics, but if all works out good, my company will be offering the same quality (if the parent company is correct; even better than Lak/Sad as the Master's are making these and not the younger luthiers) high end parts basses as Lak/Sad, but we won't gouge the bass playing public quite as much as them...but maybe we will... 11. Good job flipzoso on finding a quote that I guess is to the liking of some...I wasn't sure what some were looking for in an opinion as someones only opinion about the greatness of Freddie Mercury has been in listing a few songs...not much of a stand-point really...I highly doubt my throwing up 5 songs of Buckley's would have sufficed for someone so I say again; good job flipzoso! I'll be certain that if I feel the need to share an opinion again it's also shared by Elvis Costello so it's a little easier for some to accept as valid Gawpo Giggles
  12. My initial point was simply that I don't believe Freddie can fall into the "POP" category with any more ease than Buckley, mainly because I don't think either belong in the "POP" category...but that is just my opinion; which is my second point: any of these are just opinions and the merry-go-round of "your favorite band sucks" is the only thing thats going to be brought up here. I mean, your initial response to his name (Buckley) even being mentioned was "you gotta be fucking kidding" then poked that he only released 2 bodies of work and what was even comparable to Freddie's on them. It was a tragedy that Buckley was lost at such a young age and again, I think what he accomplished posthumously hasn't been equaled by many. Queen (I) and Queeen II were both great albums, but the world might not remember Freddie Mercury quite the same way if we lost him after those 2 works... Gawpo Giggles for the record, and its only my opinion; I think Freddie Mercury is the greatest overall rock performer of all time...he's a legend
  13. Reason's? We like his voice? Kinda Missing the point here? You know of nothing Jeff Buckley has ever done? Never heard of the guy? I simply don't believe Freddie Mercury could fall into the "POP" category any more easily than Jeff Buckley. MANY people believe JB to have one of if not the greatest male singing voice ever...many would put Freddie in the top spot, or Sir Elton and shit, since Freddie Mercury sang in the "POP" band Queen, I can't see why the lead singer of the "POP" band Led Zeppelin; Robert Plant shouldn't be on that list too... Do you need your OPINION to be the greatest and most true? Then you got it...rewrite the recordbook: Michael Jackson is no longer the King of Pop...that now belongs to...Freddie Mercury? 14. Hmmmmm...I have a tough time seeing anyone trying to pass Freddie as a "POP" vocalist and not "J-Buckley" I would also disagree with not putting J-Buckley on par with Freddie...making note of his albums is useless as we lost the great man at a very young recording career... Freddie was active from around 1970 pretty much until his untimely death in 1991...over 20yrs. J-Buckley was active for all of 5 or 6 years and posthumously there have been very few artist to reach his level of acclaim... Presently, a young guy from the Faroe Islands and a friend of mine has one of the most fantastic voices I have heard. Teitur, recently won his second "Male Vocalist of The Year" European Grammy for his work on his latest album "The Singer" and I find it to be one of the most fantastic albums in many, many years...miles away from the mounds of shit we are forced to listen to every day... 15. Listening to it now...HOLY SHIT...THE BOYS ARE BACK!!! And I'm only at the torture right now... WOW WOW WOW-WEEEEEE!!!! Gawpo Giggles
  16. Seen both, KOL several times and Killers a couple... Although KOL are for some reason playing shows at Kool Haus/Guvernment, I still LOVE the band and their music and enjoy their live shows...I'd see 'em in that shit box again for sure... I cannot stand the new Killers album and wouldn't waste a dime to hear that shit live...the live shows I saw were ok (free tickets) but between the two, KOL are IMHO the far better band...although they need to get the bell-bottoms and long hair back... Gawpo Giggles
  17. Sorry Bouche, I don't know where the vids are. A woman came and introduced herself to me and said her and her husband were there to videotape the bands...her name was Wenda I believe...something close to Wendy anyways. I believe she was involved with CanadaJams.ca I'm keeping my eyes on youtube for anything and I'll post it if I find something...they had some pretty fancy gear so they might be making some intros and a little movie-esque thing... Gawpo Giggles
  18. Well thank-you Mr. Bouche for the kind words...heres the full band members: Andrew Rodriguez (By Divine Right) - voice, guitar, keys Phil Burns (Jason Kent & The Crystal Lake) - guitar, keys, 909, voice Ryan Myshrall (Local Rabbits) - bass Adam Balsam (Spookey Ruben) - drums Me (SOM) - guitar, banjo, mandolin, voice Gawpo Giggles
  19. I'm not sure that anyone beside Mary made it out to this one but we had a good time. And thanks M as always for your presence! Jason Bajada played a really nice solo set to open things up...he's playing tonight with a slightly bigger band (although not his complete line-up) at the Cameron House. Good stuff and I would certainly recommend seeing it. We hit the stage to a nice little crowd at the Rivoli and I thought it went off really well. Andrew can be a bit worrisome about his music, which is typical of artists but after the show we were sort of flooded with comments of disbelief that the band hand only met and rehearsed 4 times. Andrews music is so intricate and full of dynamics that the other bands were really impressed which is a good boost for Andrew. I was told by a promoter last night that Andrew has already turned down 4 other gigs because he was uncertain the band was ready...he's now confident so I'm happy to say we'll be playing more shows soon... Black Diamond Bay - I wasn't sure what to expect from watching their myspace stuff but these guys are good! It's epic, driving rock & roll! Heavy bass, driving drums, at times epic, wanking (in a good sense) guitar solos with some tasty keys over top...Andrew wasn't certain if we had just walked into a Pink Floyd soundcheck when we first got there. BDB is playing Sneeky Dee's for CMW and for anyone loving rock; I say see these guys! Gawpo Giggles -there was some video camera action there and I'm certain something will find its way to youtube...
  20. The Rivoli website ( www.rivoli.ca ) says there is an $8 cover and Sunny Lane Records ( http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=34785544 ) states that it's the CD release for Black Diamond Bay... Gawpo Giggles
  21. I'm sure we'll see one another soon enough Jeff...Give Rock City HELL TONIGHT!!! Giggles - Well we have Andrew of course, myslef, Phil Burns (Jason Kent & The Crystal Lake), Ryan Myshrall (Local Rabbits) and I'm a little embarrassed but I'm not sure of Adam, our drummers last name.
  22. TONIGHTS THE NIGHT FOLKS!!! Jason Bajada will also be playing along with Black Oyster Bay... Gawpo Giggles
  23. plug something in, its sound "flat"...the straight response from the sound of the strings plucked, transfer through the bridge and into the transducer pick-up...a pre-amp takes that plain sound and shapes it into the sound more pleasurable to the ears...each company (fishman, b-bender, LR Baggs, Headway, highlander) has an idea as to what they believe is the finest "preamp" tone selection... Gawpo Giggles...
  24. I could totally see the RubberNuttz dropping these phat bass bombs all over the place...indeed "Yours Truly"! Gawpo Giggles
  25. A poorly attended Ottawa show you say? Hmmmmm... Anyways...I'm playing guitars (aco & elec.), banjos (open & closed 5-strings) and mandolin. 3 of us in the band are switching between instruments (the other 2 between guitar & keyboard) so it's a lot of different sounds coming out...thats what Andrew's been trying to do with his new album and what we're trying to recreate for the live performances. Although we're playing a shorter set on the 12th (45 ins), it'll be mostly new material with a couple gems from "Here Comes The Light"... Gawpo Giggles
