  2. Riddim Riders salute Marley February 07, 2008 James Tennant The Hamilton Spectator (Feb 7, 2008) If you're a reggae fan or were raised in the West Indies, you probably have a fair knowledge of reggae artists. Even if you have no clue what the word "reggae" means, you have likely heard of Bob Marley. Marley brought Jamaica's music onto the world stage, spreading his message of love and peace until his death from cancer in 1981. Hamilton's premier reggae act, the Riddim Riders, recognize Marley with a special birthday show this weekend. (Marley would have been 63 yesterday.) Riddim Riders' founder Mike Rajczak started playing reggae- infused music in The Inspirators but always wanted to play more authentic roots-style reggae. About three years ago, he started his search for the right musicians. "I didn't really know anyone in Hamilton back then who were old-school reggae musicians," Rajczak says. While there were reggae fans in Hamilton, there were fewer dedicated reggae musicians than there might be in a larger city such as Toronto. Eventually, though, he and friend Sharon Musgrave found some -- including brothers Richard and Errol Dailey. "They used to have a family band called the Dailey Five -- like the Jackson Five," Rajczak says. "They'd tour all around Jamaica." It didn't take long for the Riddim Riders to attract an audience. While there may not be a thriving reggae scene in town, there are plenty of fans who love the music, the message and the overall vibe of a Riddim Riders show, which is always relaxed, positive and friendly. For the Bob Marley show, the group has added a few extra songs by the artist -- both popular and lesser-known -- to help celebrate Marley's music and message. "He was talking about freedom, peace and unity, and it didn't matter that it was coming from a Jamaican perspective," Rajczak says. "It was, and is, a universal story. He was the champion of equal rights and justice and a champion for poor people everywhere. And even people who were not poor could also equally see the truth of his overall message, which is summed up in One Love." James Tennant is program director at 93.3 CFMU. Showtime What: Riddim Riders' Happy Birthday Bob Marley When: Saturday, 10 p.m. Where: The Casbah, 306 King St. W. Cost: $5 at the door
  3. Definitely one of my favourite guitar players
  4. 1,100 plants (yet to be harvested) worth 1.1 million...hmm Full story http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/Manitoba/2007/10/31/4620141.html wouldn't their calculations mean 17 kilograms which is around 37 pounds, generate around $37,000 on the street. Even if these figures are wrong to begin with I can't see how they came up with 1.1 mil. Even it was $2,400 a pound that's only 88,800 and at $10 grams all the way up it's still only around 165,000. I guess it's propaganda
  5. I like my pot activists to be civil law abiding citizens. I know that’s kind of difficult considering the issue we’re dealing with but they should use some tact. Hopefully someone that distances themselves from questionable groups involved in criminal activities, and I’m not talking about pot smokers. Also hopefully one that won’t promote high school smoke outs at your local police station, political office, or wherever.... I mean, c'mon. Maybe so.. However in my opinion Marc Emery has been a negative influence in Hamilton. My judgment is based on the effects I see in my community. He has promoted unlawful acts in Hamilton that have only added to set backs on the issue. Sure he has helped someone I know with legal aid but if they weren’t doing something illegal to begin with it wouldn’t have been an issue, and again I’m not talking about smoking pot. I feel his tactics are very questionable.
  6. and I really don;t know enough about his case. I just think he's a horrible pot activist
  7. There's so many cool birthdays around this time. We should try and throw a big group partay next year.
  8. You can't seriously think this was a good thing. No matter what you think of the guy' date=' this is not a precedent I think we should set. The fact that he is taking a guilty plea in order to keep his friends from going to jail, speaks volumes to his character, and earned my respect from that move alone. [/quote'] I don't think of him as a hero or a martyr. I think of him as an embarrassment. I smoke pot and he does not represent me or my concerns. What MarcO said.
  9. thanks for creating the facebook thingy Brodie. Had a blast NYE ... can't wait for the 9th!

  11. Over the years seeing shows in the states I can’t count the number of times I’ve been chatting with someone at a show and they ask me where I’m from and when I tell them they immediately recount their dead experience in Hamilton. I always thought that was cool and from what I can tell all the stories have been very positive..
  12. I thought it was pretty cool how a bunch of American heads stayed in Hamilton after the shows cleaning up the escarpment. It was in the news how the heads spent the next day roaming the escarpment cleaning up garbage. The City openly thanked the dead heads for coming to Hamilton and downtown merchants saw an incredible increase in their revenue. There was clearly a feeling among touring heads that Hamilton had treated them very well, and a lot of them showed their appreciation. I’d be surprised if I hear of anything similar from a band in Hamilton. It was a huge learning experience for everyone involved – the city, residents, westdale high school students. The dead experience in Hamilton helped spawn my passion for putting on shows, among Clapton, Dylan, and Young at Copps, oh and Rush! (kc, I was at that show). The way HECFI and Hamilton police treated the fans has trickled down to how I treat customers at my shows. Hamilton as much of the mullet skid bearing city it is can handle a bunch of culture. I was really proud of Hamilton for hosting these shows. I can’t imagine how older fans felt about the Dead coming to town. For me it would be like if Zep just announced two nights in Hamilton. I also think the success in Hamilton helped fuel the shows that were scheduled for Toronto just before Jerry died. What was it … four nights at the Skydome? Would have been sweat!
  13. thanks Mark! See you in Welland in a few months. Can't wait!! chrs

  17. For more information please email: jt@bentpennyrecords.com ------------- Of Interest to: Music Lovers For those of you who do not know me, I am the former lead singer of the band Staggered Crossing and the owner of Bent Penny Records. I have been an active member of the Canadian Music Community for over a decade now. Over the past six months I had been working on my very first solo album. I was recording with my producer friend Ed Zych from Massive Chang Studio's. [blurb] On December 20th in the wee hours of the morning two punks broke into Ed's studio and stole a bunch of gear, including the masters for my upcoming solo record. It is hard to believe that some people have such little regard for others. [/blurb] Needless to say, It's has been a very personal and painful experience for everyone involved. I do not expect to get the album back and will most likely have to start from scratch come the New Year. However, I felt that it was worth a try to spread the word about it in case something turns up. Some of the equipment is pretty distinctive, so if anyone happens to be passing by a pawn shop or music store and sees any of it, please let us know... here are some of the more distinctive items that were stolen from Massive Chang Studio's: An External Hard Drive: My album title is "Blank Tape Levy" Cherry red Gibson Les Paul Studio light Mark 2 Fender P bass "sting" signature model Groove Tubes GT67 tube mic Radial JDI di box Hard-drive Perhaps it may generate some awarness about the stole tapes and equipment. You never know where and when they could turn up. Pictures of the guitars have been attached to this email and rough demos from my forth coming album can be found at www.myspace.com/ juliandeantaylor If anyone does come across the gear and wishes to remain anonymous they may drop it off at Hudson Taylor Studio located at 12 Birch Ave in Toronto. Please forward this email along to anyone that you know that may be of any help. I hope that this finds you well. Happy New Year! Thanks for your time, Kind Regards, Julian p.s. On a side note, I will be performing my new material at Dora Keogh's at 141 Danforth on January 9th
  18. i was just going to post this. I love it!
  19. It was fun talking to grandma. She was one spunky lady. Big ups to Mike & Sharon from Riddim Riders. I thought they were on fire. I'm usually on stage when they play and it was great to sit back and watch them do their thing. I thought Tom Wilson killed it on Freedom ... what a great song live.
