  1. No idea if this has been talked about already, but if not...

"We are proud to announce the Zooma Tour! The inaugural multi-stage tour will

feature headliners Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals and Trey Anastasio. A

total of 20 to 25 guest acts will rotate performances throughout the tour, with

at least four guest acts playing on each date. The Zooma Tour will kick off on

June 16 and stop at amphitheaters in at least 28 major North American markets,

concluding on July 31. A confirmed list of dates and performers will follow in

    the next few weeks.

"I always knew that Ben was a great singer but after seeing him at Bonnaroo, I

realized what an amazing guitarist he is," Trey Anastasio says. "I'm really

looking forward to being on the road with him this summer." Ben Harper

continues, "For myself and the Innocent Criminals, we can't wait to be on the

Zooma tour this summer. We've been looking forward to doing shows with Trey for

a long time. I also look forward to seeing a lot of great music on the second

    stage."

The Zooma Tour will be a multi-faceted entertainment event featuring two

performance stages and a complete activity village with vendors and attractions.

Inspired by the Bonnaroo tradition, the Zooma Tour will extend the festival's

spirit, presenting diverse lineups to open minded music fans in local

communities. The Zooma Tour will also retain Bonnaroo's festive atmosphere and

dynamic entertainment options, not to mention its superior standard for quality

    live music.

In addition to full shows from Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Trey

Anastasio, a host of acts from a variety of genres will each join the tour for

approximately one week each. With its touring format, eclectic lineup, myriad

activities, and modern cultural consciousness, the Zooma Tour is certain to be a

    phenomenal summer music event.

Please check www.zoomatour.com for artist and ticket info updates."

  2. ...A tad pricy @ $299US, but a pretty neat prospect all the same. 55 discs!!!!!!!!!!

    The Tour: European Dead, 1972

    650 Tracks

    75 Songs

    22 Concerts

    11 Dark Stars

    8 Jam Sessions

    6 Soundchecks

    1 Midnight Mediterranean Beach Party

    AND…

Plenty’O’Bus Music (Bolo or Bozo? You decide!)

Thirty-three years in the making and assembled from a score of sources, Grateful Dead Productions is proud to release, in its entirety, the European Tour of 1972. Spanning 55 discs and including every scrap of music that anyone present was able to record, this will stand as one of the greatest sonic documents of all time. It captures one of the world’s most intrepid bands playing at its absolute peak. Folded into this amazing boxed set is all the material previously released on Europe 72, Hundred Year Hall, Rockin ’ The Rhein, and Steppin’ Out With The Grateful Dead: England ’72.

Beyond the stunning concerts themselves (including a pristine multi-track of the long-missing 4/17 Tivoli Gardens Dark Star), we’ve rooted out exceptional recordings from a variety of sources:

Soundchecks: Listen as the band fine-tunes not only songs in regular rotation, but also hilarious rarities such as Paper Moon and Smoke On The Water.

Jam Sessions: Whether on the bus or in the hotel room, these tracks provide exceptional glimpses into interactions between band members. Check out Bob and Pig Pen on an acoustic Turn On Your Lovelight, or Jerry and Phil drilling into a Bach-inflected duet. And did we mention that a few of their friends showed up? Keep your ears peeled for Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, and many more.

Beach Party!: With a weekend off in late May, the gang headed for the south of France and lit a bonfire at the edge of the Mediterranean. Great music ensued, and technically savvy hippies were there to capture it. Prepare yourself for an hour of the most intimate (and unusual) Grateful Dead you have ever heard.

Beyond being a true high-water mark for the band, this tour also saw both human and dynamic changes taking place. It was Pig Pen’s last tour, and Keith and Donna’s true coming-out. At the beginning of the tour, Playing In The Band contained a six minute jam, by the end of the tour the jam was over twice as long. And, last but far from least, it was deep in the heart of Europe that the Tiger Jam was born.

Get it all in one enormous boxed set that also includes a 98 page booklet

(book?) containing 75 never before published photographs as well as contributions from every person, bolo or bozo, who went along for the greatest tour of the twentieth century.

    Second post:

    David Lemieux:

We wanted to do something really spectacular for the 40th anniversary. So, in keeping with our steady evolution from early Dick's Picks and archival releases (the best parts of a show) to later releases (the entire show, warts and all), we decided to make the big leap to an entire tour. Conversations about which tour to release proved to be endlessly exciting and often highly provoking. Everybody has a favorite era, and within that era a favorite year or month. But favorites were all over the map.

Long story short, though, we realized that 1972 was either a list-topper or a runner-up for almost everybody, and that within 1972 it was the European tour that the dominated conversation. It had a lot of unique story lines: Pig's last tour; Keith's true arrival (if you count late '71 as his shakedown period); Donna's first tour, Jerry "invents" the Tiger jam; a boatload of new material that really comes into its own (including the crack-out of He's Gone). The more we considered it, the more it looked like a tour that had true historical significance. And then there was the realization of just how much unreleased material there truly was, from missing chunks of shows to…well, read on.

As I think all deadheads who are tape collectors know, there are a lot of recordings held by band insiders that simply don't circulate. And the European tour seemed to be the mother lode of uncirculated material. It sometimes felt like everybody who went along on the tour had carried a high quality deck at all times, as well as killer microphones with perfect placement.

One thing that kept happening over and over during our quest to decide which tour to release was that we would find ourselves in someone’s living room, listening to something good, and we would slowly realize that not only was the music really good, and the recording excellent, but it was a song we had never heard the band play! And the source of the material was nearly always the European tour. Not only were the hotel rooms veritable sound studios, but the busses had been wired for both broadcasting and recording, a la Further.

Another factor that came into play was the realization that although the band’s reputation with the European public was low-profile (the gigs in Europe never sold out), the band’s reputation with the musicians of Europe was huge: they were banging on their hotel doors, wanting to jam. And all those jams, it seems, were recorded.

Then there was the beach party. It happened on the night of May 20th in Antibes, France, during a five day stretch when the equipment was being transported back to England. I had heard about it over the years, but never really thought much about it. All the California beach party tapes I had heard were either too sloppily played or poorly recorded to lead me to believe that this one would be any different. But then I heard, playing in the background on a Marin County porch, two banjos playing, “Dueling Banjos” style, the melody to Birdsong. It sounded so live that I assumed the players were just around the corner until I heard Jerry’s distinctive chuckle. The hair went up on the back of my neck and I didn’t leave that day until the complete hour of spectacular acoustic material was in my pocket.

So, it’s been a real labor of love, under intense layers of secrecy, to assemble all this material (not everyone wanted to part with it and a lot of the permissions were not easy to get) but the final result is, I think, a true singularity in the annals of recorded music. I’m sure everyone who decides to take the trip back in time with us will agree.

  3. Here's a heads up on what is sure to be a great show in the G-spot which will take place April 10th in the afternoon. I caught this trio at the e-bar in town a few weeks back and it was some pretty hot sh!t, strongly recommended that you check this one out if you can make it. The message below from Jesse Stewart(the drummer in the trio) will give you all the details:

    Dear friends:

I hope this email finds everyone well and enjoying the arrival of Spring (at long last!). I am writing to let you know about an upcoming performance that I'll be involved in. On Sunday April 10 at 3pm, I'll be playing with guitar virtuoso Kevin Breit and cellist Matt Brubeck. This trio played a few weeks ago as part of the Guelph Jazz Festival's Three Tuesdays fundraising concert series at the Ebar. We had lots of fun so we are going to do it again.

For those of you who don't know, Kevin and Matt are two of the most acclaimed session musicians on the planet. Kevin has worked with an incredible array of people as a sideman (Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson, k.d. lang, Holly Cole, Roseanne Cash to name just a few) in addition to collaborating with the likes of Bill Frisell and Cyro Baptista and fronting his own groups the Sisters Euclid and Folkalarm. Matt is similarly accomplished having worked with Tom Waits, Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, Tracy Chapman, Sarah McLachlan, and many others. He was also a founding member of the jazz group Oranj Symphonette and has performed with his father, jazz legend Dave Brubeck. And then there's me who has played with Kevin Breit and Matt Brubeck....

The concert will be the last concert in the Sundays at the Centre series that I've been organizing for the past three years. It will be our 30th concert and most likely our last. I'd like to go out with a bang.

    Here are the details:

Where: Guelph Youth Music Centrr recital hall

When: Sunday April 10 at 3 pm (note that this is an afternoon gig)

How much: Tickets are available at the door for $12 or $10 with the donation of a non-perishable food item for the local foodbank. As always, the show is free for young people 14 and under and is very kid-friendly. We'll just be doing one hour long set.

The Guelph Youth Music Centre is wheelchair accessible and is located at 75 Cardigan Street in Guelph. Let me know if you have any questions.

I'll hope to see you there!

    With thanks and best wishes,

    Jesse

  5. An interesting musical tidbit that I came across scoping out some sh!t on Joni Mitchell:

    1968.03.19 Le Hibou Ottawa, Ontario

Jimi Hendrix attended the late show after playing a concert

at the Capitol Theatre and, with Joni’s permission, recorded

her performance. (Unfortunately, both Jimi’s recorder and the

tapes were stolen several days later.)

  6. OK, I'm currently tracking the Montreal moe. show to put up this weekend and there seems to be a tune between Faker and Hi & Lo at the beginning of the second set that I recognize but cannot name. I've been through a bunch of setlists and shows that I have but can't seem to put my finger on which one it is. The lyric goes like this:

Time is a song just waiting for a singer

Song is a fire that burns in the night

Burning so hot that the flesh becomes thinner

Beginning to think that you tend to lose sight...

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  7. ...oh, I forgot to mention that you should be able to score a great deal if you wait until the boxing week thing hits. Retailers roughly double their money on speakers which is way more than they make on electronics so you should be able to get a sweet deal when they drop their drawers on the price after christmas.

  8. Yo! Far as the Mission thing goes, they're great bang for the buck but you've got to trust your ears all the way when it comes to this kind of sh!t. Spending a few bucks on some decent cable will make a fair difference as well. M51's would likely be the best bet unless you could find a deal on the 780's which are supposed to be real sweet and have received rave reviews.

Paradigm is a good bet as well, a bit more rockin' in terms of character which seems to appeal to North Americans. Yes, brownie points for Being Canadian...

If you're throwing down that much coin, I would stronly consider B&W and Monitor Audio which are both highly reputable british manufacturers.

The Audio Shop on Bank has both KEF and Totem which both might be worth a look as well. The Audio Centre also has KEF and Linn which are both supposed to be pretty solid. Bleeker carries Mission and Tannoy which are also well worth considering and have an excellent reputation in the pro audio industry. Just had a look at a few models in your range which scored extremely high. Could be older numbers, but the dealers can give you the rundown on what's changed.

    KEFQ35.2(Q1 New Model?)

    Mission 780

    Monitor Audio Bronze 2

    B&W DM303

    Tannoy-?

Don't forget about Bleeker and that place called Dewar's Audio(I'm pretty sure they sell B&W) beside it if it's still there. Looks like you'll have lots of choice anyways. Have fun!!!
