  1. Any Blue Note stuff with Idris Mohammed(he was a session dude that played on Grant Green, Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd etc)

Zigaboo Modeliste - Meters Drummer- holy fricking polyrhythms and pockets batman!!

Tiki Fulwood - Funkadelic's first drummer...defines the funk drummer for me. Rumour has it that he took tons of acid after a Toronto show and was found wandering the streets of London Ont!

BradM-I'll totally agree with you on the Bozzio stuff....the drum solo in the movie Baby Snakes is fuggin unreal!!

  2. Hey Meggo;

A couple friends of mine moved out there and dj, they're really good. They run Balance Productions(if you see flyers around anywhere) and DJ under the names Deep Six and Sela...not sure if their dj names haved changed but their brothers... I highly recommend them, awesome guys too.

Not sure where exactly in BC they are but I'm sure they've been putting on shows.

  3. Don't forget they're German lego dudes (.de site) and most of Europe smokes half/half....ouch.

I'm sure even the space lego guys don't mix it up with the nasty stuff. Or maybe it would be the more intelligent Technics characters....hmmmm

  4. hehehe great review on that site-i like the fact they single out 'Nelly Retardo' heheheh

Anyways, all the reasons that guy didn't like the Sasha albums are the reasons I did...I'm pretty damn selective about the techno I collect and listen to, and this is a good album listen-I don't expect to hear any of it in a club-which this guy seemed to expect...but then again I don't dance to Squarepusher either(is it possible?)

I think he was lamenting as it wasn't a big trance epic album-maybe Sasha was stepping out of his normal DJ'ing element but it's a solid listen-very thick, full, sonic, however you describe it. I've read several reviews of it, some say it's good but not up to par with his DJ'ing, several say it's great but maybe dated...

I dunno, I didn't listen to it expecting ground-breaking genre-collapsing craziness, it's just a good listen to me.

Can't say i like the Oakenfold/Tiesto/Van Dyk style trance, it's pretty boring and repetitive to me-and I can't say i would've paid much attention to this album but my roomie's a DJ and I happened to overhear it....twas a very pleasant surprise indeed.

  5. And on a related note, the new Sasha album, Airdrawndagger, is mind-numbing!! I like it much better than the trance fare he dj's with Digweed, but on his own dj'ing he's pretty good.

The album only has a couple 4 on the floor tracks while the rest is intensely complicated yet easy to listen to, never boring!! Reminds me of Autechre, Boards of Canada, very electro stuff.

  6. Hey i love to chat about this stuff and am always willing to share, fer now i'll just answer the questions....

    1. the 8 microphones went into the Allen & Heath board, each channel had a direct out that fed into the AW4416. The monitor outs on the AW4416 were used to feed the amps/speakers in the other room. This allowed me to get the best levels recorded and have a separate mix to feed the speakers...Wil was the only one in the room with a monitor and that was just for his vocals really-used very sparingly. In the studio room we just moved the amps around so everyone could hear each other ok.

    2. The overhead/room mic had compression as well as Wil's guitar mic-not much on each tho. I think a bit of reverb was used on the snare and voice but only in the mix for the audience.

3 & 4: Hmm, don't really have numbers, for time about 2-3 hours setup, 2-3 hours takedown + performance time....then about 8-10 hours editing and mixing and maybe 1 or 2 more hours to master it...As for cost this was an experiment and the band and I worked out something that was more token than representative-that being said i'm open to negotiations, ideas and bartering!

    On a side note:

One song was cut from the final release and all gaps were reduced to the point of almost mixing the songs together....this was to fit it on an 80 minute CD, as it is right now it clocks in at 79:58.

  7. Glad you put it up Bouche- This is the one and only night for Red Room Studios as it's original owner is back in a couple days....Sure wish we could've done a bunch more as the concept is certainly unique, but maybe it will spur people on to similar things.....anyone, anyone??

  8. Well hopefully there is some sorta electronic surplus up there, you could get one there....otherwise out of any old PC-don't buy a new or even recent one as it would be too expensive. You could probably get a whole 286 or 386 for $20, and still have enough parts for a geeky mobile or some target range material.....

  9. yeah that's kind of an odd voltage for consumer electronics, you need Ottawa's equivalent of an Electronic Surplus store-Kitchener has KW Surplus, Toronto has Active Surplus(Queen W)--Ottawa must have something... Those things can't be that much at those places, make sure you try it out there with a voltmeter(ask at the counter) as those things aren't always dead-on. Yer also gonna need an appropriate plug to put on the end unless you beat all odds and get the right plug with it....

If you can wait a week or so I can look thru my boxes and see if I have one-

Also, PC power supplies put out +/-5V and +/-12V, so you could get one of those for $5 and just use the 5V pins-it'll be noisy and big but hey- $5!!

    Cheers,

    Eric

  10. Hey Groove Fetish;

The Hyde concert was taped and has just finally been officially release!!

    Hyde Park

DGM has been going through old concert tapes and digitally restoring them, to Fripp's standards. They've released some classic and amazing stuff...hard to believe any band could be that intense...in the 60's it must've really blown people's doors off.

And if anyone wants a related -solid- listen, check out MacDonald & Giles self-titled album. Amazing, amazing, and Steve Winwood is all over it as well.

    Ok here's my Wish-it-had've-been-taped list:

these ones are kinda personal ones:

David Byrne-Massey Hall 92-This concert changed my life...the night before I had gone to Rollins Band, but my friend convinced me to go to this with him. Best...Show...Ever

Soundgarden-Concert Hall 92 - One of my first concerts...blew me away, and back then Chris Cornell kicked ass!

But for the general benefit of mankind pick, i'd have to say Bootsy Collins, 69-70 when he was 18 and playing almost every night in the Apollo house band.

  11. yeah the original Giles Giles and Fripp stuff is pretty out there...

the MacDonald and Giles stuff is way more psychedelic and funky...epic songs and amazing production.

Another Frippish gem is League of Gentlemen live, i think it's called Thrang Thrang Gozinblux...it's cool, mostly all recorded at the El Mocambo in 1981, it was Fripp's "Dance Band" which hits a few cool strides, but the guitar work is craziness.....
