This is gonna be outstanding:

Milligan-Eagles Project - CD Release Performance!

featuring:

Mike Milligan - double bass

Wayne Eagles - guitar

Adam Nussbaum - drums

Thursday March 3/05, 7:30pm, $10

Library and Archives Canada

395 Wellington Street, Ottawa

(613) 996-5115

Milligan-Eagles Project builds on a colourful palette of musical influences from funk to rock, and from straight-ahead to free jazz, inspired by such post- Bitches Brew ensembles as the Gateway Trio and Tony Williams’ Lifetime. Showcased are the musical chemistry and camaraderie of three masterful players. Nailing the improvisational vibe, the recordings were cut live-off-the-floor in just two sessions at Ottawa’s Raven Street Studios. With little overdubbing or editing, what you hear is what was played - a provocative mix. Recorded with renowned drummer Billy Kilson - due to tour obligations - the drummer for the CD Release will be the incredible Adam Nussbaum.

CD's will be for sale at the venue for a discounted price (day of performance only)

Hey Todd, thanks for the notice. This'll be a great show for sure.

I caught Billy 'Killer' Kilson a few years back when he was in town at Carleton with the Dave Holland Quintet, and the guy's a monster on the drum kit. I'm really looking to seeing Adam Nussbaum for the first time, as I hear he's no slouch on the skins either.

Great musicians, great venue. Should be good.

Got my tickets this morning.

Here's your two day warning.

This show will be stellar.

And no, I have no professional involvement here.

To give you an idea:

Wayne Eagles has been playing since he was a wee one, started recording at age 16 and has been gigging/teaching/doing studio stuff ever since. He is a shredder in the styles of Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, Mike Stern, that sorta thing.

Mike Milligan used to play with the Shuffle Demons and many others. He has toured Europe seven or eight times and has released an exceptionally interesting cd of solo bass. This guy is a monster, and his creativity is at an extremely high level.

Adam Nussbaum is a jazz/rock drummer, and he's one of the best. When he's on stage I can't watch anybody else. Wayne and I went to see Jeff Beck in Toronto several years ago. After the show we popped into the Horseshoe to see a band called Peep Show. Though we were literally the only people in the place, the band was smokin' and we were both amazed by the drummer, to such an extent that we both agreed that the Peep Show set was more enjoyable than Jeff Beck's. We chatted with him a while, and before you know it Wayne had convinced Adam to move to Ottawa so they could play together.

Bradm, if you come, please bring your taping rig.

It was a good show. The standout for me was the drummer, Adam Nussbaum. I remember seeing him (with Wayne Eagles as well) in Chunga, at Dekcuf with The Crowd and Stephen Franke, but last night's playing from him erased all memory of that show: Adam was playing savagely, hitting so hard (not all the time, though) and punching through so much you could have sworn it was his band. I actually saw wood chips flying about: he was hitting so hard he was shredding his sticks!

Wayne Eagles and Mike Milligan weren't slouches, either. It was a blast to hear jazz stuff (including standards like Miles Davis' "All Blues" and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints") done with a heavier beat and more "blazing" rock guitar tones. Milligan's compositions are also great to hear; you can tell he's closely connected with Dave Holland.

And, considering I was at home in bed and asleep after the show (one set, about 70 minutes) before most shows even start, well, it was a great night, overall.

Aloha,

Brad

Frankly, I think I was mistaken...I don't think that was the same drummer from Chunga. But he was unreal, just unreal. How he can count through that stuff is amazing, but reallly, the fact that Mike was always able to count through it and be there with him was truly prodigal.
