we saw the Desert one last night. simply amazing. 1/3 of the earth is desert? I didn't realize that!

Was it 1/3 of the entire Earth's surface, or just 1/3 of the land area of the Earth, that's desert? (IIRC, 70% of the Earth is covered with ocean, so that doesn't even leave 1/3 of its surface for land, let alone desert + arable land.)

Edit to add: Another thing to realize is that "desert" doesn't always mean sand dunes. Except for its coastal regions, Antarctica is considered a desert, for example, because it gets so little precipitation.

Aloha,

Brad

From that episodes description:

Around 30% of the land's surface is desert, the most varied of our ecosystems despite the lack of rain. Unravel the secrets of desert survival and experience the ephemeral nature of this dynamic environment. Watch Saharan sandstorms nearly a mile high and desert rivers that run for a single day.
