meggo
you're making a spaghetti sauce, and you let it simmer for a good 30 minutes or so, and you don't stir it enough, and there ends up being a quarter-inch-thick layer of burnt-on tomatoey cement at the bottom?we have a very bad track record with pots in this house. Alexis
oh! my mum just told me this yesterday....if you put some vinegar and water and baking soda in the pot and let it boil that should loosen your new addition to the pot.
headymamamyrna
You can also spray oven spray on it.Hope you didn't stir it like that because you would have all the burnt stuff in your sauce.
meggo
thank you!what ended up happening was, when soaking it didn't work i left it on the counter to free up sink space.i checked it out about a day later and the offending layer had just dried up and started to peel off on it's own. hurray! MarcO
I put some water to cover the gunk and bring that back up to a boil. Helps loosen the gunkage.

Grand MC Wassa
Try more patience and lower heats. You'll extend your own life as well as that of your pots.
Douglas
I also heard that adding a dryer sheet to a soaking pot helps release the gunk. I've never tried it though
AdamH
Just a thought and no snootiness intended, but buying a slightly heavier-bottomed pot (not a horribly expensive le creuset, more like a $60 Paderno "seconds" pot from the Glebe Emporium) and keeping a lower simmer will probably prevent this from happening again. You know what else would work for sure? One of these things from a chemistry class:
phorbesie
i just burnt a pot. my haley's hints book said to cover the bottom with baking soda then add water and let soak overnight. i'll report back!
meggo
i've been burnt-pot-free for a little while now. probably just jinxed myself. oh well. i think the one that got the stuff stuck in the bottom may have actually been a paderno... it's fine now. can't say the same for some other cheapo pots... now they just have flowers in them. and by the way mr grand mc, I AM PATIENT, DAMMIT!
