Jaimoe
I think Zaun is going to be wayyyy overpriced this year, unfortunately. He is good value at a million a year, terrible value at 4-5 a year...especially if he gets a three year contract.JP is a smart dude I bet he's got some trades in the works...Wells for Pudge and Verlander!!! Haha just kidding.Zaun is worth 4 mil if you compare him to other catchers. He is still one of the better hitting catchers and was more productive than Benji before they brought him in to replace Greg. Also, Zaun is his own agent and will get 3-4 mil a season, but look for 2 years plus an option, which is fair, especially since cheap good hitting catchers are still uncommon - and 3-4 mil per is still not that expensive from a proven hitting catcher not prone to injuries and a leader. We need someone who can play defense. Zaun is slower than molasses when trying to throw some body out.
Jaimoe
Don't get me wrong. Zaun is a good offensive catcher and leader. But he doesn't have a good arm. However he is a good catcher when it comes to handling pitchers.Toronto doesn't have anyone in their system ready to take on an active back-up role, so Zaun is a good fit. Plus, you'll have a hard time finding a quality role player catcher for 1 million.

Hal Johnson
They are officially one of the slowest teams in the league now. Itd be nice if they got some speed to compliment the power, but oh well. They dont like to play small ball anyway. I have a feeling Zaun will be whathisfaces colour man in the not to distant future. Zaun has the skills to be a starter on many teams in the league, however he's an offensive catcher and IMHO not what the Jays need. He'll get a three year contract, easy. Hal Johnson
I like Zaun, but he doesnt throw out many guys. And how old is he? Problem is theres not too many good catchers out there. I guess theyre looking at the guy from texas. Be interesting to see who they get/what they do.
afro poppa
Zaun is 35.Yea your right, the catcher market is thin. Barajas (the guy from Texas) is a decent ball player who is more defensively sound then Zaun but much less of an offensive threat...although I think two years ago he hit 20 HR. afro poppa
According to JP Thomas will cost less then Hinske, Hillenbrand, and Cat combined. All three of those were used as DH's, so hes spending less money, on one go-to guy who can mash....me likes
Cully
Bring it on...now if we could just get one more starter and a SS we will be golden!!!
Hal Johnson
I heard Zaun on the fan today, he says his contract talks arent going so well, all he really wants is whats average for a catcher but Ricciardi is being difficult. Also, hes representing himself, which is a bit strange. Given the poor market, Id like to see Zaun stay for a year or two, I guess. Sucks that theres no one good out there, Catcher is my fav position, and theres nothing to get excited about.
Booche
Vernon Wells is gone. Lets be serious. The time is coming to watch the media get played by Blue Jays management.

Hal Johnson
If hes gone next year they may as well buy Zito and Schmidt and make a serious run at the Series. I mean, why not?
Jaimoe
With all the insane money being thrown around in the last week or so - and will get even more crazy when Zito and Lily sign amongst many others - the Thomas contract won't look that bad by comparison. Booche
So the Jays signed Zaun after the Rob Barajas deal fell through. Weird.
Jaimoe
I know. I just listened to the press conference. All JP said was: Greg Zaun is our catcher. He is a professional. He takes business personally since he is his own agent etc...I'm not too sad the Barajas deal fell through. But, the Jays still need to find another platoon type catcher. Hal Johnson
I listened to press conference too. Thomas sounds pretty damn confident in himself, but not in a bad way. Also, if hes only DH-ing, how hurt can he possibly get? No pun intended. Wait, yes, pun intended.
Jaimoe
I thought Thomas sounded confident with a hint of insincerity during his press conference. Thus, he's still the same guy.

However he is a HUGE upgrade at the DH position. Lets just hope he stays healthy.
