rubberdinghy
What have you done...Our city is falling apart right before our eyes. Choosing a new mayor to work with all the same councillors has become a disaster.O'Briens new name should be "Flip Flop"Anybody else care about city politics? ollie
Yeah, I'm up for some local politics.O'Brien is a bit of a joke, isn't he?"But he's a BUSINESS man!!"Ha ha.I think Light Rail is a bad idea but I hope we don't lose a boatload of cash over nixing the deal. Dr_Evil_Mouse
Yeah, I saw this coming from the first things I started hearing about him. Now, it's confirmed: Mel Lastman redux.
phishtaper
why did he get elected? why did people vote for him?
Dr_Evil_Mouse
My guess is because he - reminds people of him - (the difference being that instead of getting elected with the promise of getting the trains to run on time, O'Brien got in having promised to make them not run at all)

phishtaper
why did he get elected? why did people vote for him? He's not gay.really? im assuming that this means his opponent is gay and that ottawa didnt want a gay mayor? wowser.
phorbesie
yeah...the opponent had a substantial lead throughout the campaign...then it was 'discovered' right before the election that he's gay. then he tanked. unbelievable. that's why ottawa has no right to complain about anything the new mayor does. phishtaper
yes, and tragically the city will remain that drab grey devoid of panache and style

rubberdinghy
younger, smarter folks voted Munter.older, stubborn folks voted O'Brien.(especially when he said no tax increase)O'Brien wins...why...not enough youngsters hit the polls. Oh well...not much we can do now...he did just give the Shepards $10000 to build a fence.
Dr_Evil_Mouse
Some of the tipping point in the homophobic vote might have come from this area down south. Kilrea was getting tons and tons of hype in our local papers, which fits in well with the crimson cervical hue of much of the constituency. Then again, I don't think you can now go two pages in either of those papers without seeing a picture of Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre doing some banal thing for a gratuitous photo op. There's one writer in one of those papers that I can actually read without the requisite irony; I always wonder if his job gives him a good daily laugh or drives him crazy (probably a bit of both). phorbesie
ok sorry...i may be misinformed ollie...all i know is i never heard anything about him being gay before...and i was reading the papers during the whole election. i know i personally only 'found out' at the end there, and it was only announced on the radio then. then suddenly he goes from leading to losing. seemed pretty coincidental...? I know "queer eye for the straight guy" has given me the best advice ever for good posture: Lead with your heart and not your head. We definately need more of a feminine touch in Politics. SmoothedShredder
All I know it's not "me"... there's enough of "me" in Politics! It's too bad the closest we've come is Kim Campbell. When will we get our own Ghandi? I'll even settle for a Margret Thatcher.
Dr_Evil_Mouse
I'll even settle for a Margret Thatcher.Oh no, please don't say that! Thatcher was a scary piece of work. She made John Major look like a hippie in comparison.
