Lefty
St Patty's Day Celebrations in Saint John have never been this good. Join us at The Maritime's most original venue, The Gothic Arches for a night of dancing and live music. Vancouver's The Wassabi Collective will take the stage with very special guests, Jackfruit and Sonny D. People often say Wassabi Collective plays into the crowd, or rides the wave. This high-energy, progressive world beat group was created to deliver non-stop grooves to packed dance floors, headlining major festivals across the country with unprecedented success. The band has performed alongside high-level players such as Michael Franti and Spearhead, Doc Martin, Garaj Mahal,The Jungle Brothers, Hot Hot Heat, Ras Trillos and Randy Bachman. Audience members and promoters have often said that this Five-piece band is the best high-energy show to come out of B.C. in many years. The Wassabi Collective has thrived in the music scene because of positive attitude, solid musicianship, and creative approach. People feel inspired by the Wassabi atmosphere. The music is uplifting and soulful, and the crowd is treated as a part of the show. Lyrics and themes are designed to empower and enlighten people, and the overall vibe is simple and pure. The members of Wassabi embrace interaction with the audience as a fundamental principal, and will spend a good portion of the show improvising to the mood of the dance floor. “Mary Mother of God! Is that for real?†This might be your standard response upon seeing a group of nuns playing skeetball with grapes and hockey pucks. But, after hearing the wizardry of Jackfruit with its perfect solution of monster bass lines, supple drumbeats, and molten piano rolls, it’s definitely the only response. From forced screams to falsetto, Chris Berry (Slow Nerve Action/Duran Duran Duran) offers eccentric, yet candid, commentary on current conundrums and daily routine. Ian Lamont (Slow Nerve Action/Duran Duran Duran) speaks fluent keyboard, alternating between vivacious melodies and blasts of screeching organ with unconceivable ease. Stéphane Fortin (Blue Quarter/Duran Duran Duran) delivers unassailable baselines with slaphappy funkiness while master of the skins Joe Lussier (Frog Maphia/Groove Funktion/Montreal Funk. Assoc.) sets the tempo with limber chops and mutton rolls. Though there were changes along the way, the Vancouver based foursome formed in 2005 and went on to produces their eclectic musical style with a particular blend of off-the-wall lyrics. Jackfruit’s debut album Check ça has crossed genres and classifications creating it’s own unique bricolage too mind-blowing to pigeon-hole. Sonny discovered DJing in Grade 3. At 8 years old, armed with his uncle's hand-me-down home stereo and an armload of home-made lighting effects, Sonny would hold dances right in the classroom, playing records, tapes and even 8-tracks at lunch time. By grade 5 he was hosting school sanctioned lunchtime “discos†in the school gymnasium and was promoting teenage dances through his years in junior high. Now, over 2 decades later, Sonny is still hard at it, rockin’ clubs and parties like the seasoned veteran that he is. Sonny holds residencies with the East Coast’s longest running production company, Massive Productions as well as MOVETHEMASSES, SubRosa after-hours club and the Evolve Tribe in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Liquid Ice in St John’s, Newfoundland, and Vinylslut.ca in Calgary, Alberta and now Reflections Cabaret in Halifax, NS. It is flawless mixing and an ever-changing selection of fun and funky house, techno and breaks that have earned Sonny the largest following of any electronic music DJ on Canada’s East Coast. This has allowed him to maintain a very hectic schedule of events across the Atlantic Provinces and beyond. Sonny is also the winner of several awards including first place in Acadia University's "DJ Spinoff", Reflections Cabaret's "DJ Idol" and most recently Sonny was voted the Maritime's favorite house music DJ and overall crowd favorite at the RaveHalifax awards. “Sonny D is the most prolific and sought after DJ on Canada’s East Coastâ€: Tony Hage of Massive Productions. "Sonny D is one of, if not the most popular DJ in Halifax...": Electric Atlantic Magazine. Ticket info coming soon. Go to www.leftyproductions.com for updates.
