YearsAlongTheSea
Definitely not surprised. Canada also has the highest per-capita consumption rate. We're no angels up here...

CyberHippie
'sources say' that canada's oil/gas production facilities are at risk for terror since we are such a large supplier to the US. That would be most unfortunate.Shit, I guess the media-fear machine just scored a point on me. LOL

CyberHippie
that was actually a story they ran on three separate tv stations, during the 11o-clock news. I think it was CH, City, and CBC.But your exactly right, where does *that* news come from... "Sources say"...
TimmyB
That has been reported for years. Though not brought up enough as many people still do not know.Tim
phishtaper
ok, but ... the US consumes about 20.7 million barrels per day (bbl/d) and imports 1.61 million bbl/d of that from Canada - about 8%. domestically, it produces about 7.6 million bbl/d (but actually exports about 1.0 bbl/d of that). in total, the US imports about 13.1 million bbl/d, including: 1.55 million bbl/d from Mexico; 1.45 million bbl/d from Saudi Arabia; 1.25 million bbl/d from Venezuela, and; 1.07 million bbl/d from Nigeria. (all 2005 data, things have changed, Im sure) while Canada may be the single largest exporter to the US, our proportion is only 21% of what the US itself produces domestically; only around 12% of its total imports, and only 8% of US total consumption. so, the title "Biggest Oil Supplier" is a tad misleading. the bigger deal, i would suggest, is natural gas. virtually all US imports come from Canada, and make up for almost 20% of total consumption (compared to only about 8% for oil). amazing what the CIA will tell ya
d_rawk
The 'sources' are the organizations in question themselves. Ie: straight from the horse's mouth.Canada named in Qaeda group's U.S. oil hit listWed Feb 14, 2007 3:09 PM EST DUBAI (Reuters) - A Saudi wing of al Qaeda called for attacks on suppliers of oil to the United States around the world, saying targets should not be limited to the Middle East and listing Canada, Venezuela and Mexico as under threat. The threat appeared in the al Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula's e-magazine, Sawt al-Jihad (Voice of Holy War), which was posted on a Web site used by Islamist militants."It is necessary to hit oil interests in all regions which serve the United States, not just in the Middle East. The goal is to cut its supplies or reduce them through any means," it said. The group was behind a failed February 2006 attack on the world's largest oil processing plant, the Abqaiq facility in Saudi Arabia."Targeting oil interests includes production wells, export pipelines, oil terminals and tankers and that can reduce U.S. oil inventory, forcing it to take decisions it has been avoiding for a long time and confuse and strangle its economy," it said.In Calgary, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board -- the regulator responsible for overseeing the bulk of Canada's oil and gas production -- said it was taking the threat seriously, but had not raised security levels.Canadian government officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Canada is the biggest exporter of crude oil to the United States, followed by Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The militant group also vowed new attacks in Saudi Arabia. bouche
fuck dat. they should be supporting canada's exports so the US wouldn't need the 1.3 million from the Middle East and leave them alone.

CyberHippie
Interesting numbers there phishtaper not at all what the 'news' had eluded to. They basically said half of our production goes to the states.Who knows really... You can't believe anything you hear these days...I just thought it was interesting to ponder our impact on the US's oil supplies. \/\/illy
Yup, and they're talking about increasing the oil sands production in Alberta tenfold. Harvesting oil from sand has a MASSIVE environmental impact. Good luck ever having a hope of meeting Kyoto. I say cut the Americans off. Fuck them. timouse
Yup, and they're talking about increasing the oil sands production in Alberta tenfold. Harvesting oil from sand has a MASSIVE environmental impact. Good luck ever having a hope of meeting Kyoto. I say cut the Americans off. Fuck them.Although producers recycle much of their water, about one barrel of water is lost for every barrel of oil culled, according to the Pembina Institute, a Canadian environmental group.not to mention the added "embodied energy" in tar sands oil due to the higher energy costs involved in extraction.
