Jordan Patrick
Has anyone seen the Soul Jazz Orch before? My buddy has tickets to that, but we're thinking about going to the Black Sheep Inn this Friday(forget who'se playing though).Should I bother convincing him otherwise? bradm
According tohttp://www.theblacksheepinn.com/this Friday, March 2, they have Cara Luft, with Rob Szabo and Ox. I don't know any of them, so can't say whether that'd be better than Souljazz in Hamilton.Note also that Souljazz will be playing in Ottawa on Saturday, March 10, at Barrymore's, along with Kobo Town and Jokko.Aloha,Brad Edited February 26, 2007 by Guest

SmoothedShredder
SJO made the front page of this week's Ottawa XPress:http://www.ottawaxpress.ca/music/music.aspx?iIDArticle=11516Aloha,BradThis only prooves the myth that you have to make it somewhere else before you make it in your hometown (Ontario bands)... I always thought they were good, but they were friends, and you know, you don't want your friends to think they are too good. But seeing them at the Rivoli on Friday with all this new attention... I can say that I can see what all the fuss is about. Each player is great on their own, so the 'Orchestra' is deffinately a show. Pierre on Keys is a Wizard. You'll hear Guitar, you'll hear rolling baselines, but you won't see a string instrument on the stage. He's absolutely spectacular. Phil on Drums, and Steve on Sax play in a band in Mexico called the People Project. Everytime they go down there and come back their game reaches a whole new level. And with Ray Belting out the harmonies on the Baritone, it's hard not to get lost in the low end syncopation. Their repitoire ranges from Funk, to Afrobeat, to Spanish, to Radiohead (::fingers crossed:: Pierre does a wicked cover of Paranoid Android, and I keep bugging SoulJazz to pick up this tune). So I guess all I'm saying that with Saul Williams setting the mood with some intense spoken word, and SoulJazz closing with up to two hours of fast, tight, and funky tunes to release some of the tension Sauls going to bring... It'll be emotional!
bradm
I should really (re-)urge them to approve uploads to the Live Music Archive. I've probably got about 10 or 15 of their shows recorded, everything from late-night hard funk and afro-beat at Babylon to mellow acoustic jazz amidst restaurant patios to dancy latin and jazz in a pedestrian mall. (I don't think they've approved general/open taping [as far as I know, I'm the only one who's asked], but if someone had the ability/equipment to record them in Hamilton, it might be worth checking with Pierre to see if they'd be OK with having the show recorded, at least to get a copy to the band.)Aloha,Brad
SmoothedShredder
That NIN clip is awesome. Reminded me of the Midnight at Bonnaroo set he played a couple years ago. Real intense.Just cause Sauls not getting enough love:
