MarcO
his "Empire Burlesque" album is chock-a-block full of lyrical references to both Humphrey Bogart films and, good lord, Star Trek.

Northern Wish
I heard some minor rumblings about that around the release date, but figured with someone as well known as Dylan that it had to be unfounded since the news wasn't everywhere.I think there are a few tunes on Modern Times that more than borrow themes from other songs too.Sean
Ms Zimmy
It is called appropriation art...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appropriation_artto borrow or take a small part of someone’s work. If someone like me, unknown, uses or borrows another artists material, nobody would ever find out and no one cares, but if someone like say Andy Warhol does, then everyone knows but its Andy Warhol. And it is said that there are many...ex. Andy Warhol, Shakespear, Picasso etc. and now Bob Dylan.Stravinsky said "Good composers borrow. Great composers steal." http://williampatry.blogspot.com/search?q=dylanI'm not saying it's right, but Bob isn't the first, and wont be the last. With Dylan in this case it's said that he used a little more then usual, but then the author of the book, Yakuza, hadn't sold more then 25,000 copies until all this about Dylan came out, then the book really started selling (Maybe Yakuza was using "the secret")...so Yakuza said that he was honored even though he didn't really know who Dylan was "Isn't he that American country singer?!".I work with a Patent Lawyer who is also a Juilliard Graduate. CatPhish
perhaps that's part of the reason for the title 'Love and Theft'
Northern Wish
Anyone else think that if this was Paul Simon (especially on this site) or someone else not so headily recognized- that we would be raking them through the coals?Just because Dylan is well Dylan, doesn't mean he didn't steal it.And artist or con man, theft is wrong and inexcusable.Sean
Ms Zimmy
The quotation marks in the album title are apparently deliberate on the album cover."Love and Theft" is Eric Lott an American social historian I was pretty surprised when I first heard about this in 2003. NewRider
Anyone else think that if this was Paul Simon (especially on this site) or someone else not so headily recognized- that we would be raking them through the coals?Good question. If it was The Slip it would be more then okay on this board!
Northern Wish
The Slip are far too talented to steal music or lyrics, they do it all above board as a collaboration.... See Surprise Me Mr Davis.Short of Dylan or Garcia, I don't see anyone out there getting away with this type of thing around these parts.

TimmyB
I remember reading that the author of this work felt flattered of Bob Dylan's "Theft" of his writings.Tim
Northern Wish
Borrowing would be covering a song by another artist and paying them for that use.Referencing as we all know, requires footnotes; a nod to the original author of the work.Bob Dylan did neither of these, as I see no reference to the source of the "borrowed or referenced" material in the liner notes. And yes the artist might be flattered but as I stated earlier, but only because it was BOB DYLAN, not just any ordinary thief. BTW, I love Bob as much as all of you- but this whole thing certainly tainted my opinion of him slightly. And I like to be an ass............ Ms Zimmy
The thing is that his lyrics are probably the most scrutinized of any English-language composer living, and I'm sure he is aware of this. I highly doubt he thought no one would notice. "All art is illusion, and the greatest artists are incorrigible tricksters. If we forget that, we will no longer enjoy art at all." ? skelter
I don't think any of it counts as theft. He didn't directly plagarize any one from the book, he just alluded to it. A lot.Besides, I think it's the tradition of folk and blues to make reference to other songs and poetry and such.
