It's not as vanilla flavoured as previous lists, but of course it is still open to criticism. What? No TSOOL!

Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Tops List Of 200 Most Influential Albums

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the hugely influential recording by The Beatles, has been dubbed the most essential album ever made, but an association of music retailers.

The U.S. National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) released its 'Definitive 200' list, and the 1967 disc by the Fab Four made top spot.

In second, Pink Floyd's 1973 classic, Dark Side of the Moon.

Rounding out the top five were Michael Jackson's Thriller, Led Zeppelin IV, by Led Zeppelin, and Joshua Tree by U2.

The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street just missed the top five, coming in sixth overall.

Among the newer albums to make the Definitive 200: Norah Jones's 2002 album Come Away With Me, which hit #27, Outkast's Speakerboxx-Love Below (2003), which arrived at #29, and Green Day's American Idiot (2004), which came in at #61.

Choosing which albums made the cut came down to representatives from music retailers as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, I don't think the Allmans made the list. Hmm, that makes tons of sense, especially when Skynyrd makes the list. The Allmans only created a genre, was one of the top grossing touring bands of the 70's and have five multi-platinum albums under their belts and are members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

are these "influential" or just popular? (he asks rhetorically)

some of these dont make any sense. whitney houston? titanic soundtrack? coldplay? yikes.

where's the clash? the velvet underground? they dont even have a talking heads album on here.

that said: i cannot complain about the top ten.

#96 is The Clash's London Calling.

I'm thinking Never Mind The Bollocks should be in the Top 20.

It's also interesting that of all the possible Santana albums, they listed Supernatural in the top 20. Because, um, it sucked. And also, if you're talking about "influential" I think Abraxas would be more suitable to that slot, even if Supernatural was a bigger seller.

I'd really like to know how many people on here, or people you know, have actually heard Carol King's "Tapestry".

I have no opinion on her or this album but besides being a big seller, you never hear anyone talk about it. Ever.

Sometimes albums connect to one generation. I think Alanis' big album may find the same fate as Tapestry, and I think they are comparable. Both are women-empowered themed, but during different stages historically.

great comparison. the "influential" thing about Tapestry is that it was the first. and its also a great album - with hits like It's Too Late, I Feel the Earth Move (Under My Feet), You've Got a Friend and the song which was Aretha Frankin's anthem, (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman. check it out, if ya dont know it. along with Joni Mitchell's Blue.

lists like this are always open to debate but the more i look at it, the more i sense there are a number of entries on it where they wanted to pay tribute to an influential artist, but they couldnt figure out which album to recognize, so they just picked their biggest seller or whatever - like SANTANA - SUPERNATURAL, PEARL JAM - TEN, DMB - CRASH, and WTF?? ELVIS PRESLEY - ELVIS AT SUN (2004??!!??). I'd suggest that DMB's debut, Under The Table and Dreaming was much more influential (legitimizing pop jam) and what's with Elvis's 'most influential' album being a retrospective collection released 50 years after their recordings? That's just stupid. And Dylan's Blood on the Tracks (#157) is less influential than Matchbox Twenty (#91)?

Check out another list from 2006 for a different view of 50 albums that changed music.

The list makes sense since it reflects sales and not influence and longevity. Certainly the first Clash album was just as influential as London Calling. Live At Leeds was a precursor to punk as was Kick Out The Jams and The Stooges' Fun House. But they barely scratched platinum in sales. Go figure.

Although Eminem has him beat sale wise thanks to the crossover appeal - i.e., white audience.

Oh I agree with that for sure...I just think that The Chronic influenced a whole generation of rappers (including Eminem) with its "West Coast" sound...plus Dr. Dre produced the Marshell Mathers LP didn't he?

And where the hell is "It Takes a Nation of Millions..."?

BTW I am not disagreeing with you, or even the list (how can you really argue with opinion?), just having fun with the debate it brings up!

How does Linkin Park and Matchbox 20 rank above Dave Brubeck's "Time Out".

That's just ridiculous!

How did Matchbox 20 and Linkin Park even make the list!?!

It's about sales. I doubt even the great Time Out out-sold those hack albums. Jazz doesn't sell well compared to pop, although I believe Head Hunters is still the best selling jazz album of all time.

What you're saying makes perfect sense, but the article specifically says "Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Tops List Of 200 Most Influential Albums"... so they should either change the title or change the criteria.
