kc
PJC Presents Nettwerk recording artists' Great Lake Swimmers Special guests: Basia Bulat with full band.(Rough Trade) www.basiabulat.com Jesse Reid http://www.jessereid.com/ Friday, March 23rd At The Pepper Jack Cafe 38 King William St. Hamilton www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666 $10 advance, $12 at the door. www.greatlakeswimmers.com http://www.nettwerk.com/ (January 10, 2007 – Vancouver) Nettwerk Music Group are proud to announce, the Toronto based Great Lake Swimmers have joined the Nettwerk Productions Label roster.  Delighted by the recent addition, Nettwerk co-founder Mark Jowett pronounced “We've always been big admirers of the tremendous songs and haunting voice of Tony Dekker in the Great Lake Swimmers and thus I can speak for all of Nettwerk in saying how proud and excited we are to be working with an artist whose music we believe will move many people.â€Â Tony Dekker is the singer/songwriter behind the musical project Great Lake Swimmers, and the new third full-length album Ongiara will be released in Canada on March 27, 2007. As with the first two critically acclaimed albums (“Great Lake Swimmers†2003, Weewerk and “Bodies and Minds†2005, Weewerk), “Ongiara†continues to explore the worlds of indie folk, roots music and alt-country pop, with a focus on lyrics and the craft of songwriting. The new record is permeated with a rich natural reverb, courtesy of London, Ontario’s Aeolian Hall, which creates the magical background on which the songs are painted, with a melancholic finesse that pulls at the heartstrings at the same time. The atmospheric sound has been referred to as “ambient folk.†In addition to the core band of Tony Dekker (voice, guitar), Erik Arnesen (banjo, electric guitar), and Colin Huebert (drums, percussion, glockenspiel, timpani), the new album features special guest appearances by singer-songwriter Serena Ryder, Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer and Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy and Arcade Fire. The title of the album was taken from the Toronto Harbour boat that carried the band to their initial recording sessions on Toronto Island with Dale Morningstar. “Ongiara,†however, was mainly recorded in the Aeolian Hall, the centuries-old acoustic jewel in the heart of London, Ontario. It was engineered by Andy Magoffin, and mixed at the renowned House of Miracles. The group is celebrating the new album release with the launch of a full Canadian tour. that will begin in Montreal on March 15th. NewRider
I saw them open for Centro-Matic last April and they were great. Wish I could make this show but I'm going to the Brantford show on Saturday and my "touring" days are over.
kc
yeah, i've heard of 'em... i heard not to pay any more than $8 to see them! Hey, that's all I was looking for. Some kind of pulse on this board. By no means a Jamband so I would not expect the phone lines to be lighting up on here. I love this band though. Tony Dekker has a haunting voice with some dang well beatific lyrics. I'd even compare his sound to early Neil Young (Harvest/After the Goldrush era) and Buffalo Springfield. But that's just me. I'm sure everyone's just too busy comparing Fat Cats to Slow Coaster to have the time to check out this band. Haha. Yeah, that was a jab. Seriously though.. People should give them a listen just once, I know there are quite a few people on this board who have not heard them yet and would totally dig them if given the time to have a listen, other wise this thread would be lighting up. With lovers AND haters. http://www.myspace.com/greatlakeswimmers

Esau.
I have their self titled CD and enjoy it, haven't had the chance to see them live yet though. If my current plans change, I'll be down.
kc
Alabama Man, out of nowhere! Their other cd's including the new one are also good. I can't help it, there are few bands that make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as much as the Great Lake Swimmers. Very reminiscent of a stella blue or standing on the moon kind of vibe. Serious!
Esau.
Some how I missed this thread or else I would have piped up earlier.
