The Habs may be out of the playoffs, but their farm team Hamilton Bulldogs are not only in it, but should be considered a strong contender for the Calder Cup.

The Bulldogs are sporting a very strong and experienced team, with AHL veterans Duncan Milroy, Corey Locke, Dan Jancevki, Jonathan Ferland, and Francis Lemieux leading the charge. Interestingly enough while Kostitsyn and Grobovski are out with minor injuries, the entire team is made up of Canadian-born players!

Jaroslav Halak did not rejoin the Bulldogs after the Habs were eliminated, instead being allowed to play for Slovakia in the World Championships. This move allowed the Habs organization to immediately insert Carey Price into the Bulldogs line-up where he played two regular season games.

In what can be a very strong indication of soon-to-be UFA Yann Danis' future in the organization, Carey Price got the start in game 1 of the Bulldogs first round series against the Rochester Americans.

Bulldogs win Game 1

In his first career playoff start, Carey Price stopped all 34 shots he faced, and the Bulldogs won game 1 in Rochester 2-0. Maxim Lapierre scored the insurance goal on an empty net late in the 3rd. Next game is Saturday in Rochester. The attendance was a pathetic 2,536.

Corey Locke scored a HAT-TRICK on Monday to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 in their series with Rochester and put Booche in a state of denial as to Corey's talent and potential value to the Habs organization.

The Bulldogs eliminated Rochester last night in Hamilton advancing to the division final!

Carey Price played all 6 games and holds a GAA of 2.39 with one shutout. It doesn't look like Yann Danis will be getting the nod any time soon as the Price project is going full steam ahead.

And who is the captain of the Moose you may ask? None other than the original Captain K- Mike Keane.

The second round should be interesting.

On to the FINALS!

I can't believe that Hamilton and Ottawa are both in the finals and I'm missing it all... this SUCKS!

Carey Price is the real story for the Bulldogs during the playoffs. He's started every game so far (17), maintaining a GAA of 2.13 and a S% of 0.929, which is damn impressive for a rookie with only two pro games experience before the playoffs.

I used to enjoy going to the occasional game down at Copps when I was at home. Tickets were cheap and the hockey was good. It's too bad my dad isn't around to see this happen - he would be absolutely loving it. He worked for the 'Dogs for years, and they had a nice memorial for him at the beginning of their first home game this year.

Finally the city of Hamilton is waking up to support the Bulldogs! The Hamilton Spectator says that Copps Coliseum is expecting around 8,000 tickets to be sold before monday's game, with possible a huge walk-up crowd as well.

Some good reading around the web:

- Canadiens.com covers the history of the Baby Habs in the playoffs. Of particular interest the last time the Baby Habs won the Calder Cup was back in 1985 as the Sherbrooke Canadiens. They were led by an unproven rookie goalie. Sound familiar?

- An article about Bob Gainey and his views on building an organization from the bottom up. Here's an excerpt:

There are many who wish Bob Gainey would break form and try every possible free agent and trade avenue to win a Stanley Cup all in one year. If you are one of those who believe such impatience works, you haven't studied the Toronto Maple Leafs of the last ten seasons.

Toronto has gone for broke quite often, believing they were perhaps one player away from a Stanley Cup. They never were.

They pillaged their talent ranks of depth annually believing this myth, while trading for that one player. This season, their farm team finished dead last in their division. The Maple Leafs continuously stumble without a plan that involves vision.

I'd rather not be witness to a Canadiens GM building a team resembling the 2007 Maple Leafs or Marlies.

The Dogs are up 2-1 in the final series all thanks to Carey Price... He's stopped 120 of 126 shots in THREE GAMES. The guy is a freaking wizard or something.

The Bulldogs are one win away from the Calder Cup after beating Hershey 6-2 last night. For the first time in the series Price faced less than 40 shots.

There were 8,000 fans at last night's game. Today's game 5 should have even more. Good turnout!

No doubt the Habs management team will be at the arena tonight. So keep your eyes peeled to the executive boxes if you're at Copps tonight.

The Baby Habs did it! In front of 14,200 fans the underdog Bulldogs won game 5 2-1 and also won the Calder Cup thanks to a two point night from Maxime Lapierre and, of course, Carey Price who was selected AHL playoff MVP.

689d2760d20d52696781ac29d3b18d80.400.jpg

His final stats are

MIN 1314 SH 699 GA 45 GAA 2.06 SV% 0.936 SO 2

There were a lot of sceptics at the beginning of the playoffs when Bob Gainey allowed Jaroslav Halak to go to the World Championships and inserted Carey Price into the line-up, starting over AHL vet Yann Danis. Carey Price played all but two periods over the course of the playoffs, getting yanked only once.
