Basher
GROSS! OBSCENE! HORRIFFIC! Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics Fri Jul 11, 12:40 AM ET BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics. Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants. A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled. Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries." The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu. Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Northern Wish
Well it is gross that they had to do this, but we live in a country where Foie Gras is still legal despite it being banned elsewhere so I guess we have our own problems with humane treatment of animals :-(
mattm
We also eat chicken and veal animals in cages kinda sucks I think and the food industry that lots of people ignore is pretty bad I also think but I'm quite guilty of wanting a steak for dinner. Though I wouldn't eat dog if you've ever been to asia you'd have noticed that unlike here, there are many, many more dogs, stray ones, running around in the streets and most places don't really have them for pets I think. Northern Wish
I agree with you MattM. You should just check out what exactly the animals go through for us to eat Fois Gras. Its basically a diseased animal with an organ that is so screwed that it grows to 10x its normal size. Shit, sooner or later I might have to turn vegan- but I can't stand the thought of no steak on the bbq!

hamilton
I'm just trying to figure out why there is a picture of a pig under the word "veal".
Northern Wish
Me too, veal comes from calves. Its a nasty thing to do too, they are pumped full of antibiotics and kept in tiny cages to keep the veal tender.I am no vegan by any stretch but I stopped eating veal parm in grade 8 when I found out what was going on........ Lazlo
They're only stupid animals. Just because something is cute and cuddly and seems to show affection toward you doesn't make it any less tasty. And for the record, I'm not opposed to eating stupid people either. Accept retards, I hear it's contageous and I don't need to get worse.
