I can't believe I haven't mentioned DEVIN the Dude. "Rap's best kept secret" and "your favourite rapper's favourite rapper" not to mention Houston's finest.

Album wise I'd say the best are Just Tryin' ta Live (2002) and To tha X-Treme (2004).

aw jeez...of you're gonna listen to atmosphere, i suggest you start with the old stuff. slug has become a lot more introverted and a lot less angry lately and that always hurts music quality, at least in hip-hop.

check out:

Atmosphere - Sad Clown Bad Dub II

KRS-One - Return of the Boom Rap

Gang Starr - Gang Starr

Justice System - Rooftop Soundcheck

hmmm.. I'm sure I could dig that up.

I also have an amazing compilation of all the classic tracks from the "golden age" of hip hop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping#The_golden_age).. it's 115 tracks in length, but also a killer primer for those looking for the real deal.

Lastly, I have this mix called The Diary by Chris Read. It's a "chronological mix of the genre's landmark recordings by order of release from 1979-2007. 801 records in the blend!".

I'll try to get all this stuff up over the next day or so for everyone.

Guest Low Roller

I had K'Naan's first album (the one that was nominated for a Polaris award a couple of years back), and I wasn't greatly moved by it.

Sure the lyrics were very intelligent, but I'm not sure I like his flow.
