I'm looking for a place to showcase Ottawa a bit as the friends are from Northern Quebec and it's their first time in Ontario and in the "big" city. I'm not interested in a dance bar but one of the bars you mentioned should work fine.

DO NOT take them to the Carleton. Its most likely exactly what they are used to in N Quebec...

Take them to the Market:

The Dominion

Zaphods after 11 (bands till then)

The Aulde Dubliner (you can sit up on the second floor and see the action in the market from the full windows)

Agreed, avoid the Carleton under those circumstances. If you follow Northern Wishes' advice to kick around the market, you might want to check out the Laff (Chateau-Lafayette) which is just across from The Dom. Ottawa's oldest bar and sometimes you can score for some good music there. I know you are looking for something tonight, but if you can squeeze in tomorrow afternoon, you'll catch Lucky Ron who is an Ottawa staple.
