Copps Coliseum being renamed

So after rebranding Ivor Wynne Stadium to Tim Horton Field, another Hamilton landmark will get a long needed facelift. Copps Coliseum is going to be renamed to FirstOntario Centre.

Some historical events at Copps Coliseum:

  • In 1987, the arena was the primary host for the Canada Cup ice hockey tournament and was the site of Mario Lemieux's famous goal that beat the Soviets 6-5 in the decisive game.
  • The first ever WWF Royal Rumble was held in the arena on January 24, 1988.
  • On March 21st 1990, the Grateful Dead play the first show of back-to-back days in Hamilton. They would play Hamilton two more times in 1992.
  • Luciano Pavarotti, the world's greatest tenor, cancelled two sold-out shows at Copps — the first, on Valentine's Day, 1999, just an hour before curtain time. Less than six months later, the maestro was good enough to give fans two days' notice when he bailed on the July makeup date. Pavarotti caught a cold, it seems, every time he got close to Hamilton.
  • On June 7, 2007, the Hamilton Bulldogs won their first Calder Cup Championship in franchise history at home by defeating the Hershey Bears.
  • Bruce Springsteen's 2008 concert was the biggest grossing show in terms of revenue, reaping more than $1.9 million in ticket sales.

Is Copps actaully getting a facelift or just a re-naming?

3.22.90 solidified the venue as always being known as Copps Coliseum in my eyes.

Just like Rogers Centre will always be Skydome, and Canadian Tire Centre will always be too fucking far out of town.
