Broken Social Scene...

Zed is an awesome show. The best show CBC TV has ever produced.

Broken Social Scene... I've listened to some tracks.... I don't really 'get it'... what should I be listening for? ... it's just soundscape - am I missing something? It seems kinda uninteresting.

Please someone tell me why they are good.

I think you might have been hearing the Feel Good Lost material. There first album is just what you described kind of melancholic soundscapes. The album that made them an international phenom is You Forgot It In People which borders on or is a perfect album- it plays through like the chapters in a book and ends on the right page with the right sentence. There are instrumentals on that album as well like Pacific Theme but they're more developed. It just smacks of very timely themes, it captures if you like the zeitgeist of this generation and transcends the provincialism of Toronto, Ontario or Canada. Listen to songs like Looks Just Like The Sun, Lovers Spit, I'm Still Your Fag, Cause=Time or KC Accidental (okay that's the bulk of that album) if you still don't get it you're beyond help.

So I'm gathering we can count Kung as being a fan of theirs.

Broken Social Scene is one of those bands that are still on my list of bands to check out. Too bad that I'm reading this thread at 12:04 AM... crap!

Ahhh BSS. After hearing loads of rumblings about them here, and in print media: I decided to give them a shot and bought You Forgot It In People.

I have to admit it took about three full run throughs to "get it".... but "it" is really something special.

The songs just flow, the album moves and the players create all without any degree of high brow crap for high brow crap sake.

Anyways, thanks kung for ranting...... I wouldn't have found them otherwise.

I didn't see it either (I knew I'd forget) but how come Leslie Feist wasn't going to be there? Is she still in the band?

Also, I'm curious, how does BSS's live show stand up to their studio work? It seems like they put a lot of work into their album and I wonder if they could pull it off on the stage.

Oh KevO, they pull it off juuusssst fine! They were good at Hillside and even better in O-Town. It's a sonic orgasm that doesn't leave your pants feeling funny. It will leave you speechless and hungry for more though.

The crowd though, that's another thing. The non-dancing snoots here in Ottawa drove me absolutely crazy.

Yup, the last BSS show I saw was increadible...and they very easily do their albums justice live...even better in fact...

As far as Miss. Feist goes, she isn't really a member of the band...but a member of the whole "broken social scene"...ya know what I mean? And Kung buddy, Amy is a sweetheart!!!

Kung- I called your place last week to inform you of a show that happened this past weekend in Tdot that I thought you would have enjoyed...it should take no less then 6-8 weeks for you to rertieve your head from your ass after missing this show...easily one the top 5 concerts I've seen in my life time...

May the blessings be,

they played 'lover's spit' . . probably not the best choice as it's a very slow, mello song.. i was hoping for one of their more rocking numbers, and wasnt overly impressed with the performance, but then I'm not realy a fan of that song in the first place.

I love their drummer.

Yeah I'm kicking myself over missing No Twist but it's not that easy for us to get in and out of the city without a car so we have to pick and choose our battles. As to Amy sure she's good, I don't really dig Stars all that much though(although Melissa's going to see them in the Hammer on Thursday). I just have a major crush on Feist and also think she's got alot more verve and enjoy her voice better. Justin Peroff the drummer really does kick ass too, he's a really solid guy in person too. Funny at the TO show that Giggles and I were at they were joking about how he never solos at which point he kicked into a Zeppelin vamp (Hammer of the Gods?) it was an amusing interlude at least.

Going by the two Stars songs off the Arts & Crafts sampler, I'm not much of a fan right off the bat either. That Feist song on the other hand ("Let It Die") is a killer! I'd like to check out some more Apostles of Hustle as well.

BSS should play the Gordon Best Theatre in Peterborough. I wonder how much they cost.. Anyone know if they plan on touring this Spring/Summer?

kung- yha,Peroff is indeed a great drummer...that BSS show was a great one...and I too fully have a cruch on Feist...YUMMMM...as far as that notwist show, I took the bus 2hrs from London for the show...did the same thing last year and they cancelled the day of the show because of SARS...oh well, the show was one of the most monumental things I've ever seen...I wanted to scream, cry, laugh, yell, run around like an idiot...it was just so fucking good (they played some new material, stuff from "shrink", "neon golden" and the heavy treats from the early album "nook") I got talking to the band afterwards and they'll be back again in the not too distant future...expect a new album out in 2006...TOO LONG as far as I'm concerned...

May the blessings be,
