I just got this from a Railroad Earth newsletter... Just thought I'd share!

Though this has nothing to do with the band, we are all pet owners and animal lovers, so please read below if you use Iams or Eukanuba products!

P&G Pet Care Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods’ Nationwide U.S. and Canadian Recall of Specific Canned and Small Foil Pouch ‘Wet’ Cat and Dog Foods

Dayton, OH (March 16, 2007) – In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, P&G Pet Care has announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch “wet†cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. This voluntary recall is part of a larger product recall by Menu Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes a small portion of canned and foil pouch ‘wet’ cat foods for Iams and Eukanuba as well as other non-P&G brands. There have been a small number of reported cases of cats from the US (none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs.

This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-882-1591 or visit www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for details. Review the list of involved products here.

To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence. See www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for illustrated details. Review the list of involved products here.

P&G Pet Care is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount in the mission of Iams and Eukanuba. Tests of some affected product have not revealed the cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of the facts has been achieved. All other canned and small foil wet pouch products produced at other plants are not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba “dry†products are not manufactured at Menu Foods and not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba biscuits, treats and sauces are not affected by this issue.

P&G Pet Care has informed the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on this issue. The company regrets any inconvenience to its consumers and retail customers.

thanks for posting this, cap'n.

its much bigger than just the iams and eukanuba lines and includes various foods from dozens of different lines. the complete sets of affected foods can be found here at http://menufoods.com/recall/ ... really user-unfriendly site, tho'.

this is one of the biggest pet food recalls, ever. it's actually a canadian company in mississauga thats responsible. ... "blame canada?"

everyone with a pet should check this out.

seems like a lot of cats and dogs in canada are dieing from this, and people are racking up $1000 vet bills. here's another globe article from today. my heart goes out to these folks.

the hardest part was wading thru all the confusing info to figure out what was being recalled and whether we had it. the companies should have clearly indicated at the outset that this primarily affected wet foods, not dry food. our stuff was ok, but man, Iams? Eukanuba? these are high priced premium foods. and President's Choice? that's gotta be one of the biggest sellers, I'd guess.

and all these 42 brands of cat food and 51 brands of dog food come from one manufacturer? a colleague is a veterinary epidemiologist and she's just shaking her head over how badly this has been handled. it was a disaster in the waiting, and apparently a lot of human food is processed en masse like this too - yikes!

ok, sorry to harp on this, but it just went from tragic to criminal ...

Tests of suspect pet food killed 7, FDA says

Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario intentionally killed 7 animals to test the safety of their food, after concerns were raised.

Menu Foods told the FDA it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20. It began new tests on Feb. 27.

During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and seven animals — the mix of species was not immediately known — died, Sundlof said. The contamination appeared more deadly to cats than to dogs, he said.

This disgusts me!

Pure profit motivation. Over-centralized food production, resulting potential for widespread cross contamination, the lack of public oversight, the corruption of officials, and the general lack of safety controls. Can anyone truly say they are suprised? Good thing OUR food supply isn't run by and overseen by the same people that... oh... wait a minute...

Better save your seeds!

I was feeding Sammy Hill's Science Diet for his entire life...switched to presciption Hill's (w/d formula) and soon thereafter he died. His liver failed (not kidneys) and it was months ago now, but is there some way that I can check this out? I still have the bag of food (don't ask).

I am now beginning to question why Mico died too 4 years ago.Maybe it was his food because he was healthy one day and then he couldn't walk or climb stairs.

At the time he was on a healthy diet like Nutro something but I can't remember now.

I will go back to the pet store where i bought this food for years.

when we were small the animals ate the same as we did then all of a sudden oh this is not good for them well they never saw a vet. no needles and lived a long life , all a money racket for companys and vet,s i just don,t believe in all this food that is to be so good for animals and a lot has died in years past rather quickly hmhm wonder what happened then?

a lot of sickos out in this world, another thing is buying from bulk food bins, never know

to the best of my knowledge, the Hill's Prescription m/d feline food is the ONLY dry food affected, secondtube. no dry dog food has been recalled (unless you consider Jerky Treats to be "dry", and "food", lol).

that said, however, the tainted ingredient is suspected to be wheat gluten (and this is why Hill's took the precautionary step of recalling the m/d, as did DelMonte their Jerky Treats). the FDA has found melamine in the source wheat gluten. so, check your stuff for wheat gluten and perhaps stop feeding that food for a while until the dust settles.

the most troubling aspect is that Hill's only uses higher quality source ingredients suitable for human consumption, so some of the tainted gluten could have gotten into human food as well.
