  1. holy shit ... i've listened to this album 3x today and LOVE it. They are touring together doing a bunch of festy dates around this summer. http://bit.ly/m6SfF8 Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band – American Legacies American Legacies sounds exactly like you’d expect a joint album from Del McCoury Band and Preservation Hall Jazz Band to sound. It’s a riverboat full of rhythmically intoxicating Dixieland, blues, bluegrass, jazz and gospel that draws heavily on standards. The project began as a multi-guest collaboration, but profound chemistry between the McCoury clan and the Jazz Band quickly changed the schedule. The traditional, rollicking sound of Preservation Hall is intact throughout, and the album was recorded at the band’s west coast headquarters, but there’s no hiding Del’s mark on the record. The result is an engrossing musical document that brings together two of the most revered entities in American musical history in order to acknowledge two of America’s most important musical styles. Many of the songs are standards performed in exquisitely familiar ways, like the endearing gospel number “I’ll Fly Away,†the ageless NOLA favorite “Milenberg Joys,†and the country nugget “You Don’t Have to Be a Baby to Cry.†Hank Williams’ rambunctious “Jambalaya,†one of the world’s most perfect tunes, sounds nothing short of iconic here with the entire group cutting loose. The 13 musicians that comprise the ensemble appear together in groups as small as six, as a selected sextet does during “A Good Gal Is Hard to Find.†But most of the album is performed with at least 8 players on any given track, often featuring multiple instances of the same instrument. This overwhelming melodic sophistication gives the whole affair a celebratory feel, especially on upbeat tracks like “The Band’s In Town,†a Jazz Band original that sees all 13 players combine dizzying NOLA street music with mountainous banjo and mandolin runs. The McCoury-penned instrumental “Banjo Frisco†is another original standout, nothing less than a touchstone track for the “hillbilly jazz†nation. American Legacies also teems with amazing vocal work, whether its McCoury’s arresting call, Charlie Gabriel’s Satchmo-style singing, or Clint Maedgen’s impassioned soul sound. The whole thing is Americana nirvana, and while there’s no denying the authenticity and historical significance of the recording, any listener’s enjoyment of American Legacies is going to hinge on their tolerance for the style. Obviously, bluegrass and New Orleans music fans will swoon, and those with even the faintest sense of history will be as affected by the joining of the two musical forces as they are by the resulting sounds.- Bryan Rodgers mp3@320 Tracklist 1. 2. Also of interesting note in PEI for roughly every 28,000 people there is one MP representing them in Ottawa. For ON/AB/BC the numbers are roughly 114,800 citizens for one MP representing. One could look at those numbers and say that a PEI vote is 4x as powerful than in other provinces
  3. http://www.fairvote.ca/en/Canadians-cheated-again-by-voting-system Canadians cheated again by voting system says Fair Vote Canada For immediate release May 3, 2011 Canada’s national citizens’ movement for voting reform has released analysis of Tuesday’s federal election results showing that the outcome does not accurately reflect the way Canadians voted. “The Conservative party increased their vote percentage by less than two points,†says Fair Vote Canada (FVC) President Bronwen Bruch, “but this allowed them to win 24 more seats than in 2008, when they were already over-represented. Stephen Harper calls this a ‘decisive endorsement’, but we call it a rip-off.†At the time of writing, these were the actual seats won and leading for each party: CON 167, NDP 102, LIB 34, BQ 4, GREEN 1 If the seats were won in proportion to the votes that were cast, the numbers would look like this: CON 122, NDP 95, LIB 59, BQ 19, GREEN 13 According to these results, the Conservatives have won 54.22% of the seats with only 39.62% of the votes, one of the least legitimate majorities in Canadian history. “This is a classic phony majority,†said Bruch, “and leaves us with a government that is completely unaccountable to Parliament. As long as they maintain rigid party discipline, nothing bad can happen to them for four years.†The FVC analysis shows that the NDP, historically under-represented by Canada’s winner-take-all voting system, is now over-represented by seven seats, thanks to the “orange wave†that vaulted them into second place. The Liberal Party, on the other hand, traditionally over-represented to the degree that they were regarded as Canada’s “natural governing partyâ€, is now the chief victim of the voting system. While their vote percentage fell by less than 8%, they lost more than half their seats. The Bloc Québècois, which has always previously been over-represented because their votes are concentrated in one region, has been decimated. Although their vote percentage has collapsed, they should still be entitled to 19 seats, but they are winning or leading in only four seats. The Green Party is ecstatic to have finally won a single seat, but they actually received enough votes across the country to win 13 seats. “Across the country,†added Fair Vote Canada Executive Director Wayne Smith, “vote splits between the Liberals and NDP allowed the Conservatives to steal seats. Once again, our antiquated voting system has given us the wrong government, a government that most of us voted against. “It is truly time to change our voting system. If we want politics to be different, we need a vote that makes a difference.â€
  4. http://bit.ly/mtdSIw The Allman Brothers Band – Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival: July 3 & 5, 1970 For the first time anywhere — officially or not — two (mostly) complete performances by the Allman Brothers at the Atlanta International Pop Festival over the Fourth of July weekend (they were the bookends of the fest) in 1970 have been issued with stellar sound, complete annotation and cool liner notes. The festival took place while the Allmans were in the process of recording their second album, Idlewild South, when they appeared on July 3 as the hometown openers of the entire festival and proceeded to blow the minds of over 100,000 people — for their last set on July 5 at 3:50 a.m. they performed in front of as many as 500,000. Musically, other than a somewhat stiff version of “Statesboro Blues,†the July 3 set is magical. There is a stunning version of “Dreams†lasting almost ten minutes with beautiful Hammond/guitar interplay between Gregg and Dickey. Long and ferocious versions of “Whipping Post†and “Mountain Jam†are here, but the track on the July 3 set is Berry Oakley’s feral vocal read of Willie Dixon’s “Hoochie Coochie Man.††A short (5:49) version of this song, it has a rock & roll immediacy that is strained out of the longer versions to gain the improvisational edge. Disc one also restores Gregg Allman’s “Every Hungry Woman,†to its rightful place — previously only having been available on an anthology. Harp player Thom Doucette, no stranger to ABB fans, is here aplenty, adding his righteous, stinging harp lines to many tracks on both nights. The way Gregg’s organ playing is recorded here offers a new view of just how integral an anchor he was for both guitarists to play off. He is a monster musician and, even at this early date, was showing off his improvisational and rhythmic skills. Disc two is graced by the original live mixes of “Statesboro Blues†and “Whipping Post†that were released on First Great Rock Festivals of the Seventies and these are stunning for their intensity and focus, as well as clarity. “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’†is as tough a set opener as there is with the ringing slide guitars attacking one another and going for broke to kick things off. The long versions of “Stormy Monday†and “‘Liz Reed†are among the most intimate and groundbreaking the band ever recorded, while “Whipping Post†transmutes itself into a jazz tune for a few minutes and changes everything. The nearly half-hour “Mountain Jam†is deepened here by the addition of a third guitarist: Johnny Winter sits in with the ABB and Doucette for the definitive version of this classic — you can forget the one on Eat a Peach after this. While it won’t replace Live at the Fillmore East as the greatest live record ever made, this is an essential purchase for ABB fans, one that gives us the treat of a dignified rendering of a very important and defining moment in the band’s early career. It also provides an excellent, even mind-blowing introduction to a band that was at the peak of its power. - Thom Jurek mp3@320 Tracklist DISC 1: (July 3, 1970) 01. Introduction 02. 7. Yeah - we'd see 102% exercising their votes! Like I said, if they can manage to allow for everyone to file their taxes via the interwebs then why not voting? They simply have to put an access code in a mailing (like they already send out the personalized voting info cards) and it provides one more option for registered voters.
  8. That '73 Road Trips release was so damn good ... just gotta listen to some more stellar '73 Dead. Talk about having "complete contempt for the public"' date=' that's just g-damn embarrassing. [/quote'] I'd like to hear from the constituents who are RESPONSIBLE for voting her in! Did she offer free drinks for votes at the bar?
  10. mmmmmmmmmmm http://bit.ly/kdGiL4 Grateful Dead – Road Trips Vol. 4 No. 3 Colorado has been fertile Grateful Dead Territory since the band’s first foray at the short-lived Denver Family Dog in 1967, and by the time 1973 rolled around, the group had built a large and loyal following there the old-fashioned way—by playing killer shows! Y’know, we often talk about the deluge of great tunes that came into the Dead’s repertoire during that fabulously fecund 1969-70 time period, but from the summer of ’72 through the summer of ’73, there was a veritable psychedelicornucopia of wondrous new Dead tunes introduced, including a handful that appear on this edition of Road Trips: “Here Comes Sunshine,†“Mississippi Half-Step,†“Weather Report Suite,†“They Love Each Other,†“Stella Blueâ€; each a classic in its own way, and indicative of some of the exciting new directions the Dead’s music was heading. All of those except “They Love Each Other†turned up on the Dead’s exceptional Wake of the Flood album, released in mid-October 1973. It was the band’s first studio record since American Beauty three years earlier, and also the maiden release on their own Grateful Dead Records label, so they were way jazzed to be out there on the road digging into their recent tunes, several of which proved to be fine jamming vehicles and were instantly popular with the group’s ever-growing fan base. The first set of 11/21/73 is a rock-solid and varied collection of tunes, including several “western†numbers (“Jack Straw,†“Me and My Uncle,†“Mexicali Bluesâ€), a lovely “Brokedown Palace†(remember when that could turn up almost anywhere in a show?), a lilting and crystalline “Here Comes Sunshine†and a beautifully developed “Weather Report Suiteâ€â€”already a monumental song after just three months! The second set is where the fireworks really go off, however. It’s dominated by a spectacular hour-long medley that begins with “Half-Step,†segues into “Playing in the Band,†travels 715 miles due south for a little gunplay in “El Paso,†dips back into the “Playing†jam for spell, then into a superb “Wharf Rat,†back to a dynamic “Playing†reprise, and is topped off by one of the best versions of “Morning Dew†from this period. Nice! There’s plenty of show after that, too, with “Truckin’†rolling into a rare “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,†then “Goin’ Down the Road†and “Saturday Night†as the rockin’ capper. “Uncle John’s†is the perfect anthemic encore. Filling out Disc Three is a meaty triumvirate from 11/20 consisting of “Truckin’,†a typically convoluted and exciting “Other One,†and then a lovely “Stella Blue†that ends this Road Trips on a particularly poignant note. - Blair Jackson mp3@V0 Tracklist CD 1: 1. 12. Well put Al. I am sure we will all survive, but man this country really could change. With Harper poised to nominate a bunch of SC Justices in the next four years, and appoint a bunch of people to the Senate, the lasting effect of his "rule" will be felt for a long time. It's so true that the people deserve what they voted for. And for those that did NOT vote ... they deserve to be the ones to get it the hardest, IMHO Scary times ahead here at the CBC i'm sure. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck ... fuck you Harper ... and FUCKYOU too Iggy. You are a chump. That speech you gave last night was pathetic. Glad you are "learning from your mistakes" and are on your f'in knees begging for your party to keep you around in any sort of position. I think you should be cleaning toilet stalls for them. UGH. Here's one interesting thing from the G&M Al: Lawrence Martin, a political columnist for The Globe and Mail newspaper and author of "Harperland: The Politics of Control," calls Harper "the most autocratic and partisan prime minister Canada has ever had."
  13. I am half-way through listening to this and it's fucking GREAT! Really digging it. http://bit.ly/jlnngS My Morning Jacket – Circuital With almost 2 million albums sold worldwide and a previous Billboard #9 debut with 50,000 scanned first week…. and now… My Morning Jacket return with their sixth studio album, the stunning Circuital. Circuital was recorded in Louisville, KY and Nashville, TN, and was co-produced by frontman Jim James and Tucker Martine (R.E.M., Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists). The result is yet another reinvention of their sound that both forges new ground and maintains the distinct spirit of MMJ s previous work. – amazon.com mp3@320 Tracklist 01 – Victory Dance 02 – Circuital 03 – The Day Is Coming 04 – Wonderful (The Way I Feel) 05 – Outta My System 06 – Holdin On To Black Metal 07 – First Light 08 – You Wanna Freak Out 09 – Slow Slow Tune 10 – Movin Away http://bit.ly/jlnngS
  14. I just don't get how we can file our fucking taxes online with special codes, etc. yet we still have to go to vote with an X on paper. Open up online voting and we'd see a helluva lot more than 60% exercising their votes. If you don't pay your taxes you pay a penalty. If you don't vote (and you can vote for nobody) then there should be a penalty too, imho. Make it easy and online.
  15. The pig rape was oh so South Parkian. Speaking of which' date=' I can't wait to see how Trey and Matt squeeze this in to an upcoming episode [/quote'] No kidding!
