  1. http://bit.ly/nKBTzp The Jayhawks – Mockingbird Time The Jayhawks have finally set a release date for Mockingbird Time, the first LP recorded with the classic Gary Louris and Mark Olson-led line-up since 1995’s Tomorrow The Green Grass. It hits shelves on September 20th. Check out an exclusive video preview of the LP. “Our goal is to make the best Jayhawks album that’s ever been done,†Louris told Rolling Stone last November. “Mark and I both feel that there is some business left undone and we got together and wrote some great songs.†In addition to co-writing all the songs with Olson, Louris also produced the record. Mockingbird Time was recorded in Minneapolis at The Terrarium Recording Studios over a month’s time during the winter of 2010. Other original band members featured on the record include Karen Grotberg (keyboards, vocals), Tim O’Reagan (drums, vocals) and Marc Perlman (bass). Of returning to the studio as The Jayhawks, Louris notes, “The difference from then and now is that Mark and I have both experienced different kinds of music and expanded our palates. So this record has moments of experimentation and a bit of worldliness. I like a well-crafted, in-and-out kind of song, but with Mark, the lyrics dictate the music, and he’ll go off into interesting, asymmetrical compositions. So it’s a nice balance. Certain things were meant to be—like peanut butter and jelly—and Mark and I just work well together. And having done a lot of co-writing during the last six or seven years, I’m more appreciative of the magic that we have together. That doesn’t come along very often for anybody.†The new release comes on the heels of several pivotal and reinvigorating years for the band, whose first career-spanning anthology Music From The North Country was released in 2009 by American/Legacy. Additionally, in August 2010, for the first time on CD, the self-titled debut album from the band (often referred to by fans as The Bunkhouse album) was reissued by Lost Highway Records. Moreover, in January 2011 the band’s first two albums for American Recordings—Hollywood Town Hall (1992) and Tomorrow The Green Grass (1995)—were re-released with a wealth of rare bonus tracks. In conjunction with these reissues the original Jayhawks line-up shared the stage for the first time in 15+ years in January 2011, performing special shows in Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and Toronto. Of the band’s performance as a reunited quintet, the Chicago Tribune heralded, “During a soaring two-hour set, the Jayhawks put on a clinic in the art of blended melodies and balanced songwriting. As always, Olson and fellow guitarist/singer Gary Louris’ impeccable vocal harmonies held sway.†“This is a record for a true Jayhawks fan who loves Tomorrow The Green Grass,†said Louris. “It’s not a mirror image, but it has a lot of the same elements.†- Rolling Stone mp3@V0 Track List: 1. 2. Good bumping into you guys in Niagara on the weekend. Good tunes, fine food, and a bunch of Red Stripes were a perfect way to cap off the night. Good luck in NYC if I don't see you before you take off.
  3. I'm there tonight with my son's little league team. If there's any chance it's close by and i can make it i'll stop in for a few Red Stripes
  4. I've listened to this one a couple of times in the last few days. Gotta say, I think I like it more than the Back To Black release. Much more on the jazzier side of things. http://bit.ly/oWbY6d Amy Winehouse - Frank (Deluxe Edition) The FRANK DELUXE EDITION two-cd set from Amy Winehouse is a treasure. Jazzier than Back to Black, FRANK is a call back to another place and time. Winehouse is pure talent and it’s a shame that her personal life is so out of control that it might bring the end to such a force of nature. The first cd in FRANK must be the original cd and begins with an intro of Winehouse scatting. It goes on with songs that have a funky jazz & soul beat and Winehouse sounds like a cross between Billie Holliday and Shirley Bassey, with a little Barbra Streisand thrown in for good measure. I love her remake of “Moody’s Mood For Love.†There are also a couple of hidden tracks that start after the “Outro.†But the real treat is the second cd. This bonus disc has Winehouse covering classics like “Someone To Watch Over Me,†“Teach Me Tonight,†and “‘Round Midnight†and she makes them all her own. Also included on cd 2 are live versions of the songs “Stronger Than Me,†“I Heard Love Is Blind,†“Take The Box,†and “In My Bed†and other mixes of songs from cd 1. - Alex Honda mp3@320 CD1 01. 5. Donat'd Thanks Booche. Anything over $15 gets a tax receipt too.
  6. http://bit.ly/qoGVpv Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (Deluxe Edition) The story of Back to Black is one in which celebrity and the potential of commercial success threaten to ruin Amy Winehouse, since the same insouciance and playfulness that made her sound so special when she debuted could easily have been whitewashed right out of existence for this breakout record. (That fact may help to explain why fans were so scared by press allegations that Winehouse had deliberately lost weight in order to present a slimmer appearance.) Although Back to Black does see her deserting jazz and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren. With producer Salaam Remi returning from Frank, plus the welcome addition of Mark Ronson (fresh off successes producing for Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams), Back to Black has a similar sound to Frank but much more flair and spark to it. Winehouse was inspired by girl group soul of the ’60s, and fortunately Ronson and Remi are two of the most facile and organic R&B producers active. (They certainly know how to evoke the era too; Remi’s “Tears Dry on Their Own†is a sparkling homage to the Motown chestnut “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,†and Ronson summons a host of Brill Building touchstones on his tracks.) As before, Winehouse writes all of the songs from her experiences, most of which involve the occasionally riotous and often bittersweet vagaries of love. Also in similar fashion to Frank, her eye for details and her way of relating them are delightful. She states her case against “Rehab†on the knockout first single with some great lines: “They tried to make me go to rehab I won’t go go go, I’d rather be at home with Ray†(Charles, that is). As often as not, though, the songs on Back to Black are universal, songs that anyone, even Joss Stone, could take to the top of the charts, such as “Love Is a Losing Game†or the title song (“We only said good bye with words, I died a hundred times/You go back to her, and I go back to blackâ€). - John Bush mp3@320 Track List: CD1: 01 Rehab 02 You Know Im No Good 03 Me And Mr Jones 04 Just Friends 05 Back To Black 06 Love Is A Losing Game 07 Tears Dry On Their Own 08 Wake Up Alone 09 Some Unholy War 10 He Can Only Hold Her 11 Addicted CD2: 01 Valerie 02 Cupid [Deluxe Edition Version] 03 Monkey Man 04 To Know Him Is To Love Him [Napster Live] 05 Hey Little Rich Girl [Ft. 7. Really? The Add To Instant Queue works just fine for me and I'm not getting discs shipped. Ahhh ... i just looked it up. Looks like it came out a month ago in Canada and is the equivalent of Add To Instant Queue in the US (which is what I'm using).
  8. Is that any different than "Add To Instant Queue" ?
  9. http://bit.ly/pPq6tE John Butler Trio – Live at Red Rocks Worldwide platinum-selling artist John Butler Trio returns with their first live album in five years. Live at Red Rocks captures JBT's explosive, uplifting and inspired live show on a June evening at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, CO. The collection features 22 songs spanning JBT's entire repertoire including choice cuts from critically-acclaimed albums April Uprising (2010) and Grand National (2007). Both albums yielded chart-topping US Triple-A singles, One Way Road & Better Than, and garnered rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. - Amazon.com The John Butler Trio may be smaller than most jam bands, but they sure know how to make a racket. The guys get a little help from their friends on this concert album -- Danielle Caruana trades harmonies with her husband, Mr. Butler himself, on “Losing You,†and a Native American dancing troupe joins the group on several songs -- but most of Live at Red Rocks focuses on the trio itself, highlighting John Butler’s guitar work and showcasing the multi-instrumental talents of bandmates Byron Luiters and Nicky Bomba, both of whom were still relatively new at the time of the album’s recording. Playing live brings out the crunchy side in Butler’s music, which loses some of the mainstream-skirting elements from April Uprising and gets back to the jam band appeal that first launched his career. He sings about revolution, about respecting your mother, about smoking marijuana, and he does so with a sort of skittish, imperfect voice that’s solid enough to carry these melodies but doesn’t take away from his guitar skills, which are the bread and butter of this three-disc set. You don’t hear the crowd much, even on the quieter numbers, but you definitely see them on the DVD. They look like they’re having fun. If you’re a Butler fan, you probably will too. - Andrew Leahey mp3@V0 Track List: CD1: 01 – Introduction 02 – Used To Get High 03 – I’d Do Anything 04 – Betterman 05 – Don’t Wanna See Your Face 06 – Revolution 07 – Hoe Down 08 – Better Than 09 – Johnny’s Gone 10 – Take Me 11 – Treat Yo Mama 12 – Losing You 13 – Intro to Ocean 14 – Ocean CD2: 01 – Ragged Mile 02 – Zebra 03 – Good Excuse 04 – C’mon Now 05 – Close To You 06 – Peaches And Cream 07 – One Way Road 08 – Funky Tonight Video: http://livestre.am/5eKh http://bit.ly/pPq6tE
  10. Friends of Massy Hall f'd up and didn't have the shows listed until about 10:20 ... I scored a pair through Wilco in the second row and one front row through Massey for Friday night btw - the Massey tix end up being $63 with all fees in too.
  11. Listened on headphones to the first set this afternoon. Gotta say, while the band is ON, Jerry is not in top form at all (blown lyrics, weak voice, and uninspired fills for the most part). He is the weak link in the chain for sure. I kept thinking that set-break could revive him After hearing Alabama and Greatest Story, you could easily tell he was "back" and the whole band sounds even better because of it Looking forward to hearing the rest of it now
  12. f'in fantastic show last night. Tons of energy and the place was hoppin'. Bring 'em back

  14. If you like your kickass blues-rock, i highly suggest you take a listen to this smokin' set from the late-great Jeff Healy. WOW. The Watchtower is worth it on its own http://bit.ly/jjBFWY The Jeff Healey Band - Live At Grossman’s 1994 Capturing a homecoming gig for the conquering hero, Live at Grossman's 1994 finds blues-rocker Jeff Healey returning to a favorite club. Looking back, it’s easy to see that Healey was between stages: his most popular albums were just behind him and the years of him carving out a niche as a working bluesman who dabbled in jazz were ahead of him. Here, he was performing with the velocity and volume of a blues-rocker at his peak, invigorated by an intimate setting where he could just play, not worrying about throwing in “Angel Eyes†or “I Think I Love You Too Much.†The result is a set where he salutes his idols -- Clapton, Elmore James, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf, Hendrix, even the Beatles via an excellent “Yer Blues†-- and it’s one of his purest and best records as a straight-ahead blues-rocker. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine mp3@320 Tracklist: 01 – I’m Going Home 02 – Killing Floor 03 – As The Years Go Passing By 04 – Ain’t That Just Like A Woman 05 – Yer Blues 06 – Who’s Been Talking 07 – Crossroads 08 – Dust My Broom 09 – All Along The Watchtower http://bit.ly/jjBFWY
  15. http://bit.ly/jM7eyD Bettye LaVette - Change Is Gonna Come Sessions After a powerhouse performance at the Presidential Inauguration in January 2009, Bettye Lavette shines a new light on that past with, “A CHANGE IS GONNA COME SESSIONS.†The digital-only EP for Anti- Records, available exclusively through iTunes, revisits Bettye’s forgotten post-Atlantic Records years as a nightclub singer, Broadway performer, and touring cast member opposite Cab Calloway in “Bubbling Brown Sugar.†The EP opens with a stirring solo version of Sam Cooke’s posthumous Civil Rights anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come,†a song which Bettye sang with Jon Bon Jovi in January ‘09 as part of the “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial†concert. Joining Bettye for these sessions are pianist and musical director Al Hill, veteran bassist John Heard who has accompanied such luminaries as Count Basie, Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, and Art Pepper, drummer Danny Frankel (k.d. lang, Lou Reed), and Tom Hagerman from DeVotchKa on strings. A mix of standards and soul classics from Bettye’s 1970s stage and nightclub repertoire rounds out the 6-song set, including songs by Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Bill Withers, and Jimmy Reed. A rendition of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless The Child,†a song that Bettye first performed with show-stopping magnificence in “Bubbling Brown Sugar†highlights Bettye’s vocal mastery. This nod to the past is just the latest step in a nearly five-decade career that has truly come full circle and is now pointed straight ahead: from early promise to a masterwork (“Child of the Seventiesâ€) shelved by Atlantic Records; from Broadway to obscurity; from a triumphant return with her 2005 Anti- debut “I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise,†to a Grammy nomination for “The Scene of the Crimeâ€; and most recently her devastating performances honoring The Who at the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2008, paired with Jon Bon Jovi at the Lincoln Memorial for President Obama’s inaugural celebration in January, and alongside Sir Paul McCartney at a Radio City Music Hall benefit for the David Lynch Foundation in April. - The Jazz Chill Corner mp3@320 Tracklist 01. 16. http://bit.ly/iM4JtC Thievery Corporation - Culture of Fear Thievery Corporation returns with their sixth original studio album Culture of Fear! Following up their incendiary and bombastic call to arms Radio Retaliation from 2008, this time around Eric Hilton and Rob Garza craft a simmering and hazy collection of atmospheric gems that recalls their early production work but reflects a thoroughly contemporary zeitgeist of socio-political angst and unease. Utilizing a team of skilled session players from their acclaimed live show and beyond, Culture of Fear finds the duo easing into expansive multipart space-jams like “Tower Seven†and jazzy instrumental b-boy breaks like “Light Flares.†Not only are usual suspects like multilingual chanteuse Lou Lou and dancehall toaster Sleepy Wonder back to lend their haunting vocals, but several new contributors also join the Corporation. Renowned hip-hop MC Mr. Lif blazes the microphone on the title track “Culture of Fear†with a scathing flow that aims to uplift and enlighten as it does burn down babylon! Rising star Ras Puma also drops mystic incantations on “False Flag Dub†and the slow burning roots reggae throwback “Overstand.†It’s not all fire and brimstone however, as Shana Halligan of Bitter:Sweet coos sultrily over booming tribal rhythms on “Is it Over?â€, and newcomer Kota lends angelic and sprightly verses on album closer “Free.†mp3@320 Tracklist 01. Why there? Well, longtime Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann is a professor at SUNY Fredonia, and the Lips were at Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studio in nearby Cassadaga, New York to record a live version of The Soft Bulletin. The results of that performance, dubbed The Soft Bulletin: Live La Fantastique de Institution 2011, will be housed on a USB stick implanted in a marijuana-flavoured gummy skull sold with tickets to the band’s two-night residency at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in 2011. mp3@320 Tracklist: 01. 19. http://bit.ly/jKXlX6 Crosby and Nash - Another Stoney Evening The Crosby-Nash subset of CSNY carried with it much of the charm and harmony of the larger group, and together and apart the two singers mined that appeal for several gold albums, especially in the first couple of years after the breakup of CSNY in 1970. They even inspired bootleggers, who released A Very Stoney Evening, drawn from one of their 1971 shows. Hence the title of this belated official release, drawn from a different show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on October 10. Working with acoustic guitars and piano, they sang some of their more popular CSNY songs (“Déjà Vu,†“Teach Your Childrenâ€), as well as tunes from their solo albums and songs that would turn up on their duo album the following year. Boasting of having “the loosest show on earth†and making cryptic drug references, they nevertheless sang and played well, overcoming with enthusiasm and craft the relative weaknesses of some of the material — Crosby’s formlessness, Nash’s preciousness. And the camaraderie they shared with each other and their audience even allowed them a certain imperiousness, such as when the drugged performers lectured the drugged audience on how to clap on the right beat. - William Ruhlmann mp3@320 Tracklist: 1. 20. http://bit.ly/kYgwyj Back in October, Galactic played a blistering late nighter at Tip’s to cap off Day One of this past year’s Voodoo Experience (Muse headlined that night in City Park). Luckily for us, the show was captured for posterity and will be released on the middle Tuesday of Jazz Fest (May 3rd) as a follow-up to We Love ‘Em Tonight , the band’s only other proper live release (released in 2001), a baker’s dozen of live tracks also recorded at the band’s home base at Tipitina’s. October 29, 2010 was just your standard day at the roving Galactic office – To kick off the day, Drummer Stanton Moore delivered an eye-opening kickstarter set with the Stanton Moore Trio and Anders Osborne in the early afternoon in the Preservation Hall Tent. Galactic then played an evening set in a larger tent that featured Shamarr Allen guesting for a good chunk of the set. And as if that wasn’t enough, the band moved it down to Tip’s to throw a special guest laden party @ Tip’s that didn’t start ’til after 1 a.m. and pushed on ’til about 3:30 or so. With Soul Rebels Brass Band, Big Freedia and Trombone Shorty, this live album aptly encapsulates Galactic’s current touring model of playing with a who’s who of special guests and also features the incomparable Cyril Neville and Corey Henry, who have become a big part of the Galactic live experience these past couple of years. New Orleans outfit GALACTIC has a well earned reputation as one of the most exhilarating live acts around. Last year the band released the critically acclaimed genre defying sonic tribute to the Big Easy entitled YA-KA-MAY, which The Boston Globe described as “an album that showcases a breathtaking array of New Orleans talent, from old-school R&B legends to influential underground hip-hop artists†and the Huffington Post proclaimed as “NOT your grandparents’ New Orleans record!†Now the celebrated outfit offers up a rollicking live counterpart to YA-KA-MAY with The Other Side Of Midnight: Live In New Orleans out 5/3 via Anti- Records. The album was recorded during an electrifying sold-out show at legendary New Orleans’ nightclub Tipitinas which has hosted countless luminaries such as the Neville Bros, the Meters, Dr. John and Professor Longhair. The venue has, of late, become something of a regular home court for GALACTIC, with the band playing multiple sold out shows at the historic club throughout the year. Like Ya-Ka-May, The Other Side of Midnight: Live in New Orleans features a host of guest appearances from the bawdy hip-shaking gender bending “bounce†star Big Freedia to local legends Cyril Neville and Trombone Shorty, the whole thing capturing GALACTIC’s deep musical relationship with their storied hometown. Only in a city like New Orleans could a night this raucous, sweaty and wild also be so incredibly profound. - Wesley mp3@320 Tracklist: 1. Introduction 2. Gossip (feat. Cyril Neville) 3.
