  1. I think if I could get any shirt, it would be one that I need to replace. It was a lot-tee with the cover of Fantastic Four 49 (the coming of Galactus) which had been altered to say Phantastic Phour and all the member faces were the Fantastic Four (guess who was who?) the issue number was 420 and Phan 4 on the back. It was great. I still have it, but it is so beyond repair. One for the memorabilia trunk, I guess.

  2. Hey Folks,

I thought I'd start a new thread for my report. It'll be brief as I'm still pulling it together from last night (revenge of the greasy breakfast)

This isn't so much a show review as a final commentary, so if you will ,bear with me.

Pre-show was pre-show but with a twist. This was many people's last Burt show. The bar was packed by showtime. So many old faces, and when I say old faces, not just the ones that I knew personally, but the band and the clan of people I've seen at so many shows before. One last time seemed to be the mantra. My friend, Katie P said alot of the old Lakehead gang was there. On the car ride down, we'd listened to May 24 Frontiertown, and all I wanted was a Bellbottoms. Check the setlist for how that worked out for me (thank-you Frescolopez, I trust the show will be making an appearance on the canjam hub??)

The boys were on fire. Everyone was given space to roam around in the jams (although those on the dance floor weren't lucky enough to have that option) There was definitely an emotion on stage and in the crowd. Before we knew it, we were at the end of the second set. I have to admit I gave a few strangers a hug in support. It had been one of the best shows I've seen them play in 4 years . It had to be one of the most bittersweet moments; they played so well, they're all so talented and, possibly, this was it.

Thanks go out to all who put us up last night, old friends for showing up, Santuarians Tungstun, Beats, and for the first time, Backbacon (who needs nametags, eh?) but most of all to Jeff, Gavin, Jeremy and Mike,(+ all the Burts who came before them) all of whom were kind enough over the years to have at least one conversation with me and , on top of it all, put on some of the best shows with what has become some of my favorite music in the world.

If you can, go out and see the Burt Neilson Band one more time. I have no doubt bigger and better things lie ahead, but some magic happens only once in a lifetime.

  3. again my humble apologies, but it was too good not to share

Ain't 17 and 18 a bitch? Today's best for me is 37. You should have seen the staff room with this one. Our school almost had to cancel afternoon classes!

Between this and Civ III, I may lose what little social graces I had in the first place!

  4. First listen opinions......

Lots of good summer memories flooding back. I think alot of this stuff will be good patio shit. I'm liking just about everything. Compared to the summer were everything is loosy-goosy, the horns and especially the keys are really coming through. Last Tube and Push exceeded all expectations. Pretty songs Drifting (and near the end, Flock of Words)

Biggest Disappointments: Night - does little for me

Money, loveand change - yikes, too much tinkering, MUCH prefer the original tour version (think the way it starts the whole way through)

Overall though, super strong effort. Great producing and possibly Trey's greatest success in the studio since Ghost.

    meye2sense,

  5. Ten years ago today, I was top dog in OAC, jonesing for it all to be over so I could just get the hell out of Chesley ON and start my life as a university student. I also had no idea who Phish was and my knowledge of the Dead was limited to Skeltons From the Closet. Ahh, high school. Who knew it'd be a career choice (ha!)

    Happy First Day of Spring!

  6. Man, that is such sad news. I just saw them a few weeks ago. I should have savored the moment. When I think of all the great Burt moments I've had and all the awesome people I've met, it makes me sad to think it's come to an end. Bands gotta stop doing this to me (like I have any say )

But on the positive side, breakups have beget positives before and this potentially could be no different. To all the members of all the incarnations, thanks a bunch.

The Burts are dead, long live the Burts!

  7. Let's start with our "when action heroes go wrong section"

    Arnie - Last Action Hero

Sly - Stop or My Mom will Shoot

Then there are the perenial favs - Waterworld, Ishtar

But if you want my favs as in good "bad" movies look no further than these classics

Amazon Women on the Moon (Don "No Soul" Simmons)

    and

UHF - ("Gandhi II - This time...it's personal)

  8. First of all, thank-you to da boys for a great show on Saturday. Any offical time on that set? MON-ster. Good to re-meet and meet Velvet and Passed-out-guy as well. Hope the drive home was OK. For those in attendance, I think we ALL know who we'll be voting for.....

As for Wrestlemania 18, what's there to say? B and me cruised around the dome on Sunday trying to unload that extra ticket...but ending up trading it for BETTER SEATS dead centre just up off the floor. Outside it was clear that people were there for one thing and one thing only..HULK HOGAN! Quite the spectacle, and a couple of good matches but it was all about Hogan/Rock. The crowd was overwhelmingly Hogan. Everytime he threw a punch, crowd goes nuts. Boos for the Rock. The Rock looks confused, hurt. Hogan feels the power of Hulkamania. I was 10 years old again, I swear. But alas, the Rock would truimph. Hogan offers the hand of friendship. Rock accepts, puts Hogan over (yeah right!) Hogan does the four corners. Rock leaves .However, NWO members do not like friendship. Hall and Nash attack Hogan. Rock helps Hogan. Hogan's a face again! Watch for the Real Americian to return tonight. It was awesome.

Oh and HHH got the belt back.

Shit drive home through freezing drizzle (a new Canadian invention). In bed by 3am, up and off to school by 7am. Mr. King = tired but the coolest cause he got to see Hulkamania ONE LAST TIME.

    GOOD LORD, JESSE!

  9. So I'm enlisting help from fellow Santurians here looking to kill some time today. The situation:

For those of you that don't know, I'm a high school teacher. So I had this kid in my office the other day and he spots the Phish sticker on my bulletin board and says (and trust me, I've been waiting for a student to say this to me for 2 years now) "hey, I'm just starting to get into those guys" Currently owns most of the catalogue included a live one. Right before march break throws me a single blank disc and says "Could you make a disc of songs I don't have?" How could I say no?

So...here it is nearing the end of my break and I'm going to start making it. But where to start. Here's where you come in. Make your suggestions (keep in mind you can suggest a specific version but whether I have it or not is the key) All I know is he's getting a PYITE to start it all off, you go from there.

    HAVE FUN!

  10. In reply:

Velvet: Audiogalaxy if you can believe it. Some really nice girl helped me put it together. Email me if you want a copy (two discs).

GM: Yeah, what the fuck happened? I could have sworn I was on 48, 49 or something. Hmmmm, maybe time to up my medication. See you in T.O. potentially.

  11. Ahh GentleMonkey, I was saving the five disc question in honour of my fiftieth post but "Mother Superior jumped the gun". Anyway, onwards....

the Philidelphia Experiment - Christian McBride is the shit

The James Taylor Quartet - Message From the Underground

    New Deal - 6 22 00

Phish - 2/20/93 - Roxy Theater, Altanta -one of those CRAZY second sets -love it!

Hawksley Workman - 6/2/00 Ted's Wrecking Yard - one of Canada's most talented songwriters - check him out.

That's it. Thanks for some great March break suggestions!

  12. Scottieking can help! Not only do I have that show, was at that show, but it was a birthday show for me (Dec 5)! And not only that, but this was also when I met Tungsten for the first time (more like Drunken, remember the Beachcombers) What a weekend that was. Tour opener in Detroit on Thursday, Teach Friday, Party for Birthday Friday and Saturday, get up rough, drive to Rochester, dig it all night, drive home (5:30 am!) and teach on Monday. An experience never to be done again.

Must stop typing, still hurting from New Deal.

Email me and we'll set something up.

  13. I disagree, old friend. When I read this thread I thought about what seperates a jamband from the rest. I think it's the bands that rely on the jam, that strive for the jam, maybe most importantly, aim to jam and explore and segue for 10,15,20+ intervals .Now Led Zep could jam (see The Song Remains the Same: 24 min Dazed and Confused) but where they a jamband?

I kinda hate the term myself. Somebody recently stated that all the music they listened to couldn't be described by a single term and I think that's, for the most part ,true with the cats in our scene. All bands jam, true but very few struggle with being defined by those jams.

  14. Despite having been a huge fan for a few years before, I actually didn't get to see my first show until Lemonwheel due to an extended stint in Southern Asia. It was a pretty emotional time. I'd only been back in the country for 2 weeks, the plan was to take the long way to Maine via Ottawa, Montreal. My grandma passed away our first day on the road, so we turned around (we were in Ottawa), went to the funeral, my Dad said go, and we burned 13 and a half hours straight to Maine. By the time Mike's Song kicked in, overwhelmed, I burst into tears of release and joy. Wouldn't be the last time I cried at a show, but it was an emotional beginning to an amazing legacy of shows. One that I have no doubt will continue for years to come....
