  1. Agreed! Second time puttin down the 401 in less than a week and worth every gallon.

In a complete opposite to MMW show, sun and warmth. DJ Serious was O.K. I liked his selection but his spinning would be later put to shame.

The Herbalizer (Band, although I think they're officially dropping the monikier) came out to a large but largely subdued crowd. Instantly, I could sense the tightness. Now the only part of the show I at first didn't dig was the constant cheerleading from the trumpet player. I say, let the music speak for itself.

But that it soon did. All members (eight) were extremely talented but kudos go to Keyboard 1 for funkin it up all night, the Woodwind player (tenor sax and flute) and of course the DJ who is the most flawless live spinner I've ever seen (Kid K included) The crowd all the way back to lake was lovin it and by the time the band had lit that huge spliff on stage for the encore, converts, all of them.

Sometimes the universe pays you back and last night I got a free show that'll keep me smilin til Phil.

  2. Yay, London! Destined yet to become the jam mecca of the southwest.

In response to a few things:

The Yams : James (lead singer) was a student teacher at the high school I teach at this year. He and I did a duet ala Luther Wright on Another Brick in the Wall PT2 for an assembly. They're good shit, check'em out.

Nuggets Productions: yeah boys, go to it. That July 10th one is going to be a tough one to pull folks for after Phil the night before but I'm sure I'll find the strength.

Giggles and Beats: could this Friday finally be the night I'm in town to see you guys? Stay tuned....

and in a fit of shameless self promotion [big Grin]

  3. Okay, maybe somewhere, someone thought fo to play off the word - collapse - in the wake of the tragedy. Twin cups for effect. Welcome to the art of advertising.

Any press is good press, right. And once again, exploitation of tragedy/any thing contriversial and here we are, raving and ranting. I think the oppposite approach has to be taken here.

The media (ads, news, music) has a way of taking ownership of words these days. I read a great article in Shift magazine about this a couple of months ago (March April 2002). For example, can you say the phrase to anyone "Have you had a break today?" and not have them or yourself for a split second not visualize golden arches. Try and see how many times this happens in a day. Just do it.

See? So when did collapse become the exclusive property of the 9/11? The same time Ground Zero moved from Hiroshima to New York. I think the more we allow ownership of concepts by the media, the less freedom we have within our world. I already rail against P.C.ness for the same reason. So fuck it. Collapse into cool just as easy as you fall into flavor (and what the hell is Tazo anyway. Christ it's a glorified fucking slushy) and start taking your LANGUAGE back.

  4. Speaking of MST3000, I just watch Logan's Run the other night. Now this would be a movie to give the MST3000 treatment to.

so 1. yes, but mostly in book or comic form

    2. Doctor Who when I was a kid

    3. Buck Rodgers, the cast of Starlost

    Love the 70's sci-fi!

  5. It's me.

I love Zappa quotes. I only include that as my sig cause it kinda flies in the face of what we do here. When it all boils down to it, this too is how I feel about trying to explain "my music" to my friends who don't groove or who have closed their eyes at live show and got washed away or watched an extremely talented musician for hours and not be able to comprend how they did what they did.

Think I'll keep it for now. [Cool]

  6. MMW - Rain or Shine (should have checked off Shine)

This just hasn't been my year for weather and shows. First , Frontiertown and snow. Now MMW and rain. I, unforunately, got caught away from the pavillion when Passed Out Guy pulled me aside for a toot. This meant one soggy show for scottieking. I'm sure it's a great spot in the sun.

As for the show, this being my 4th MMW show, all in Toronto, I gotta say it wins only 2nd place (I loved last year's appearence at the Jazzfest) The band was obviously having some tech. diff. at the beginning and I felt the true vibe of the show didn't get rockin til after.

That being said, I heard some of the sickest sonic experimentation I've ever heard them pull off. Medeski's area looks more and more like a lab everytime I see it. Illy B got too much talent for his own good. And once again, Chris Wood goes unrated as the archor that keeps that band from lifting completely out of our solar system.

All and all, solid show. Tough to groove packed into benches and soaking wet (my own fault for attending my first show in over 5 years WITHOUT the magic hat: don't ask) Oh well, good to see the whore, Tungsten, P.O.G., MarcO, Trev (what do you post under), the Kitchener Gang, and from a distance, the Punk.

See some of you at Herbalizer otherwise, Sunday in Durham. sk

I'd never thought the first words out of my mouth coming out of a Trey Band show would be "Man, that flute solo was out of control"...

    and yet it was.

The one thing that makes these Trey shows so good is with the number of different and EXTREMELY talented musicians, 9 times out of 10 you come out talking about the band and not Ernest G. himself.

    Now to the highlights

    - being front row of the mezzanine in easily one of the most beautiful venues I've ever seen - perfect view

    - tight first set - huge jams - got there late missed "Night Speaks" (no big loss)

-second set - that Last Tube had to be 30min+ and like I said, the aforementioned flute solo and jam - killer

    - love Jennifer - trumpet, singing and TUBA jammin

    - Cyro Baptista is a Brazillian Tazmanian devil -really adds to the energy

-nice acoustic moments - I like the new tune Discern alot

    - Encore - SULTANS OF SWING - unbelievably perfect

Some questions remain that some of you that were there can help out with:

Did I hear right during the band introductions that Trey introduced himself as Wilson?

What was on the hat that the kid gave Trey/that Jennifer wore?

Despite getting rear-ended on the way home (by some 20 year Trey head , no worries , all's fine) and the 7 o'clock am tee off time I had this morning, I'm still riding the vibe. Great things ahead for you Vermont show folks!

It's a horrible feeling to have to choose. Anyone who has gone travelling knows this dilemna. Above you see CD's chosen for their quality but also in some cases their sentimental value, their ability to time travel me to a place in my past.

    Get'em out there folks!

  10. All lyrics may be paraphased - feel free to correct - lyrics that make me laugh

"Ain't no devil, just God when he's drunk" Tom Waits

    "A women need a man like a fish needs a bicycle" U2

"Then he smoked my eyelids and punched my cigerette" Bob Dylan

For pure lyricism, check the Weakerthans' album Left and Leaving. Pure poetic genius. Hawksley Workman ain't no slouch either.

  11. Hey Pholks! Just a public service announcement from your friendly neighbourhood Scottieking. This is one of those hints that really helps out. I wondered why I was getting more spam than usually. Here's why (hotmail BASTARDS!)

    >If you have a Hotmail account - or if you've used Microsoft Passport - for

    >more than a month, there's something you need to check.

    >I mean, uncheck. Quickly

    >

    >If you signed up for Hotmail - or anything else that uses Passport - more

    >than a couple of months ago, you may be in for a big surprise. It seems

    >that Microsoft changed the rules while you weren't looking. Unilaterally,

    >Microsoft may have granted itself permission to pass along your personal

    >information to other companies that use Passport on their Web sites. The

    >personal information includes your email address, your birthday, your

    >country and zip code, your gender and occupation.

    >

    >Has Microsoft taken liberties with your info? There's an easy way to check.

    >

    >Go into Hotmail.

    >Click Options (to the right of the tab that says "Address Book").

    >Click Personal Profile (in the upper left corner).

    >Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and see whether the boxes marked

    >"Share my e-mail address" and "Share my other registration information"

    >have been checked.

    >

    >Those boxes were not there when I signed up for Hotmail, and chances are

    >pretty good they didn't exist when you signed up for it, either. I

    >certainly never gave Microsoft permission to hand out my email address - or

    >my birthday, gender or occupation. Yet both of those boxes on my personal

    >profile were checked. I bet they're checked on your personal profile, too.

    Just being helpful!

  12. Forget that! The Greatest MASH characters are the performances of one Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland as the original Trapper and Hawkeye. Hell the whole orginial MASH cast Robert Duvall, TOm Skeriitt (sp)

And "Spearchucker" Jones is from the original movie as well. If you've never seen it, rent it today!

  13. Third concert ever..... Guns N Roses/ Metallica/ Faith No More CNE Stadium Sept 1992.

Metallica rocked my world even though I was definitely more into the Gunners at the time.

One of my favorite oddities is Orchestra Metallica (not to be confused with Metallica w/Orchestra) I don't know the real name but I'd love to try and find it again. Anybody?
