  2. Sunday March 11 2007 @ Casbah Lounge 306 King St W, Unit B Myspace Baby || DAVID MYLES || || JENN GRANT || KATIE CARON On David Myles... "Myles played with a blues band in a Chinese soccer stadium. The show was televised to millions of people. Back in Canada, he opened for west-coast rap group The Rascalz as a beat-boxer. This year he played trumpet on recent but unreleased Buck 65 recordings. Add to that a well-received debut album, Together and Alone, and youve got a man whose appetite for music is insatiable. Myles new album, Things Have Changed departs from the traditional definition of roots music. Co-produced with Charles Austin (Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Buck 65), Things Have Changed features horns reminiscent of Al Greens soul music, Mississippi John Hurt-style finger-picking, and smooth vocals that fall somewhere between Chet Baker and Paul Simon. Myles has opted for the full band treatment of his songs with horns, pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, piano, Wurlitzer organ, guitar, upright bass and drums. Things Have Changed features some of Atlantic Canadas finest musicians. Jill Barber, Dale Murray (Cuff the Duke, Buck 65, Nathan Wiley), Matt Murphy (Flashing Lights, Superfriendz), Gabe Minnikin (The Guthries), Tom Easley (Hot Toddy), Geoff Arsenault (Ray Bonneville, Carlos Del Junco), and others join forces to create an album reminiscent of early Ry Cooder, Tom Waits and J.J. Cale." On Jenn Grant... Jenn is now working on her first full length that she has been invited to record with the CBC. "ORCHESTRA FOR THE MOON" (produced by Jason MacIsaac and David Christensen of the heavy blinkers) features such notable guests as Ron Sexsmith, Jill Barber, Matt Mays, Tyler Messick, Dale Murray, and Rose Cousins. Grant has been touring in Europe the past 2 years as a solo artist and occasionally for the pop orchestrial band the Heavy Blinkers. In the past year she has played the Toronto Film Festival, SXSW, CMW, HPX and POP Komm. Grant was also fortunate enough to be asked to open for Feist, Ron Sexsmith and Josh Ritter among others, in intimate vunes, in her recent career. Most recently, Jenn completed a three week tour of Germany, and is currently touring throughout Canada, while organizing shows to support her upcoming releasen in 2007. 8PM Doors open 9PM Show starts $5 at the door

  15. I'm excited for this too. Last time the girls played Casbah it was one of those "best shows nobody had a chance to see". The buzz is right on, so I think it'll be different this time. Not to mention a solo/originals Lisa Winn set is a rare occurrence these days that's also a must see.

  17. Cincinnati Records Presents Wednesday February 7 9pm -- $10 PO'GIRL (members of The Be Good Tanyas) plus special guest LISA WINN and Robyn Dell'Unto Casbah 306 King St W 905-521-4441 http://casbahlounge.ca Vagabond lullabies, beat-poetry, inner-city blues. These urban minstrels pen harmony drenched melodies to warm your toes. Take the bellow of the blues, the wail of a gypsy fiddle, punk-rock street poetry, a cajun love song, and depression-era jazz, mix it all up and add some old R&B. This music is rich with musical influences, sweetness, grit and soul. In a brief two years this group of hard-travelling musical iconoclasts has released two albums to critical acclaim while touring relentlessly, criss-crossing the United States and Canada in their sturdy old van "shaggy". They wowed audiences across the UK on two tours, and won over festival goers everywhere with their powerful, passionate, and spirited live show.Their fantastically successful recent performances in Lugano, Switzerland at the celebrated "Blues to Bop" festival were a strong incentice for Po' Girl to do more European tours in the near future The current line-up of Po'Girl includes Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas, and Allison Russell, (who co-founded the band together after discovering their shared passion for creaky prohibition-era jazz and blues) alongside virtuoso fiddler Diona Davies and multi-instrumentalist Awna Teixeira. These four ladies all sing, write and perform on a stunning array of instruments including banjo, clarinet, slide guitar, piano, accordian, wash-tub bass, harmonica, penny-whistle, mandolin, violin, and much more. Backing them on drums is one of Vancouvers top musical talents John Raham from groups such as Kinnie Starr, Millenium Project, Green Room, and Mimosa, John Raham brings deep, funky, creative and soulful grooves to the sound of Po' Girl. Currently the band is working on recording their third album to be released by Nettwerk records in 2006.
