  1. It was funny trying to tell Melissa that all the songs she heard in Halifax were 'new' songs and that they don't play old songs much anymore. She insisted they played like six old songs, which of course she meant the new old songs or whatever. I do think there's a legit criticism to be made that they're a year or two out of date at least. I mean look even the Montreal connection does shit for them- in part because they missed the timing in terms of hype bubbles.
  2. I know I thought you'd all like that. I can totally hear Marc saying it.
  3. I haven't read the Jaco book but I'd like to here more from 'ersh on it. I know Milkowski is getting a lot of attention amongst other jazz writers for this tell-all (responsibly) book. It's one of those fascinating stories where a consummate hanger-around wrote a book ultimately that depicts Jacó's savage drug use. Much like the Mulroney Tapes book there was an accusation of dirty pool, that somethings confided in friendship should never be written about. He is immensely sympathetic to Jaco from what I gather though just not forgiving.
  4. You know I have to concur with Adam (one and a hair's assesment)- the non-profit world (and non-profit wages unfortunately) could really use a Marge. I mean if there was a way to unite what you were doing in terms of graphic design work wise and you're passions whether cycling or open spaces etc. you would be a really potent ally for any organization.
  5. I really think, and often say, that Dream Brother the dual biography of Jeff and his father Tim Buckley is an amazing book. You have to be into Jeff Buckley though. Not like a biography but Greil Marcus' Old, Weird America (and Mystery Train) are seminal books that pour over the American musical tradition. America, which was called Invisible Republic before reprint, deals loosely with Dylan and the Band's basement tapes era but it's about a lot more.
  6. Yeah that whole thing had cheddar all over it. I could see where the programmers thought that was a good lineup but those people are so fucking awkward. Richard Bell, Linden and Garth helps as do the Rodeo Kings but you sort of have to be fourty years old and smoke poorly rolled hash joints to dig them. How does Joni's Case of You fit in? That's the only inspired choice so far and it's the only one not from the show.
  7. Fuck I missed Poison! Seriously that sucks I wonder if I was outside or had left at that point.
  8. No, I don't really dig them much either. My ex is into them and Loel's sister is her best friend and she lives in town, plus the Halifax connection for us. You sort of have to be into a certain style of music. I want to know what this Borcherdt deal is. Is it like a Remains of Brian Borcherdt type solo deal?
  9. Yeah I know Byen from the Paper Bag connection too (they do wankstas Tokyo Police Club, that BSS kids album To the Moon! or whatever, handful of others). I also noticed how Andre lost track of a month or so there.
  10. Heppy Bewthday to You, Heppy Bewthday to You (that's Happy Birthday in South Afrikan!)
  11. Mule tends to be able to dig deep. Can't see them playing too many deep cuts though if Gordie's hammering away.
  12. Oh and they played Voodoo Lady>Jump Around>Voodoo Lady, Gin and Juice> Paul Revere, in the first set I think it was Franklyn's Tower>Don't Get Your Back Up (title? Sarah Harmer)>Franklyn's Tower.
  13. I just saw Loel and Paul not five minutes ago going to breakfast. I also heard they blew the roof off last night.
  14. It was Killin' Time Band I wrote a feature on them this week. They used to be Pailface Boogie, never quite caught on but I'm sure a lot of people have been at fests where they've played or gigs with them on the bill. They're big into this Hempfest outside the Soo if I'm right in Northern Ontario, the article mentions that- it's a 'contest for bragging rights among amateur and professional marijuana cultivators'. Brad (Hail's) is more involved with promoting it this year, it sounds like a ball.
  15. Long time Slip family member wrote a nice review of Eisenhower.

    The Slip?

Okay now we're getting somewhere. Two fine Slip posters sit on either side of the Vinyl front door now. It was great to see slick looking flyers lying around too (although they've been putting them out a lot and are running real low I gather- needs a top up).
  17. The Lieberman thing REALLY concerns me. That fucking weasel IS the balance of power. There was a weird moment at one of the Iraq hearings lately where he came in late and then chatted with McCain and the Maine republican and when he went to sit down he sort of shot his caucus a look like 'did ya catch that?'. Plus he was wearing a red tie which even the Times jokingly (not so jokingly) said may have been a sign. I'm sure he just loves the position he's in but I can think of no one I would rather hold the balance of power than he. Plus the democrats are already back to bickering with each other over how they may have left another 16-20 seats on the floor since Howard Dean DNC chair wanted representation in all fifty states and didn't redistribute resources to close races - all within %1. That's James Carville and a lot of others view. They actually could have taken more. Also the DNC had a 10 million line of credit and spent only half. Spend the fucking money, the GOP ain't got a problem with it.
  18. That's a somewhat unsurprising turn of events. Jackson is one of a small small group of directors that can write their own ticket these days (the Wachowski bros. are another irrespective of what gender Larry is).
  19. I guess they obviously have to choose songs from the Last Waltz but what a yuckfest of choices. I sense I wouldn't really care for these performances. Nice reference by Linden to Clapton and Danko's co-penned All Our Past Times. All our past times should be forgotten, all our past times should be erased.
  20. Scott's a good player he just wrangles his way into so many contexts in Guelph he's sort of ubiquitous. I'm not sure people know Nilan Perera - he was in a group called Handslang years ago and plays in a lot of contexts. I saw him at Earl Bails years ago play the Zappa part in a sanctioned Zappa tribute night (the Green Rosetta stands out). It was one of those weird one offs you hear about on the radio and it was in this ampitheatre on a nice summer night. Awesome. He does some neat stuff with a scanner that he sort of keeps hidden at his side so you're not sure what's going on.
