  6. I agree with you phishtaper, i'm not laying blame. I just think immigration law has brought about a sad state of affairs, where a family has to resort to illegally smuggling themselves into a country to have a fair shot at a decent life. The boy is being played like a pawn, but that alternative is way better than the one this family faces should they be deported back to Iran. I'm not blaming the parents, the system created this nightmare. Yeeeikes, is watching "Children of Men". I just watched that last night and that forshadows an ugly immigration mess.. one that's not overly hard to imagine!
  7. yyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiikkkkes! what a sick and twisted world we are creating.
  8. yep, i know. i just feel for the little Mormon kid, and think in all of this political correctness, her plight gets lost.
  9. Where are you trying to get? It seems to me that I should be the person trying to get somewhere, if anyone. You have the support of the majority of this board, and of the courts. You're already there. I suppose i'm the one who's truly the glutton, responding to your post which insinuates listening to my ideas would be 'punishment'. but i want to make the world better, and am a happy spirit, so i'll say this: the kid in this particular situation was bullying and in bullying, used the phrase "that's gay". what was reacted to here wasn't that this child bullied another child, but that the child used a word which we don't consider appropriate. the victim then turned from being a bullied child, to the gay population at large. this seems to be a recurring theme with the advent of the phrase 'politically correct'. the abused in an isolated situation, is no longer the abused. various identity groups take their place instead. in an ideal world we would be desensitized from words and would recognize that a word will never have the power to kill you. but the world is far from ideal, and human beings are laden with emotions, and certain words will always have their stinging bites. my answer is a bigger picture. focus on what makes people want to hurt other people, what drives people to insult and to bully. If we shift our focus and our resources and our money towards that, we will stop the attitudes that spur someone to use such offensive words in the first place and the victim in these situations, will finally be the victim. if we don't do that, and merely continue on our current path of slapping wrists when someone uses a 'politically incorrect' term, people will continue to insult and to bully and will find a different offensive word to fill that void. you will still have that child in the corner of your school yard thinking it's uncool to be a Mormon and we'll have a different identity group as the victim. that's all.
  10. a-fuckin'mean too. the 'words' are not how we solve the problem, the attitude is. the sooner we recognize this, the step closer we'll be to your goal quoted above.
  11. The environment benefits greatly with DST. Longer hours of natural daylight = less electricity consumption.
  12. YAY MARCO! YAY MARCO! YAY MARCO! This may be a major breakthrough.. but I AGREE!
  13. It's not about definitions. It's about how we individually interpret them. What you interpret, someone else interprets differently. And it goes both ways, for the good, and for the bad. edit to add: i drew differences in definitions to show how various interpretations are possible. Also important to remember, is that cultural definitions are limited to cultures. People of other cultures, may have absolutely no idea that an 'ok' word for them, might be so negative to a person of different culture.

  15. It's a word Ollie. It's all in how you take it. I do find it a bit friggin' ridiculous that there's an unspoken law that some people can use the word nigger, but other's can't. There aren't any alternate definitions of the word either, as there are for 'gay'.
  16. . Because you just can't break down and agree with me! Hahaha! Going for lunch!
  17. Sorry, but NO it does not. How can you speak for the intent of thousands and thousands of people who use that word? That seems a little much.
  18. I agree; however, I do not think a court of law can uphold "sensitivity, maturity, and intelligence", nor should it.
  19. For me, this has nothing to do with "offending or marginalizing gay people." The person who used the word was NOT referring to homosexuals!!! Go back and read that Happy Holidays thread if you must, but my argument there, and my argument here is the same thing! Stop the PC train!
  20. I find it a little hard to wrap my head around this because the word gay, by true definition, has nothing to do with homosexuality, and only takes on it's reference because of cultural influence. And furthermore, the use of the word gay in this context was meant to imply "stupid, silly, dumb", which is ANOTHER definition imposed by cultural influence. I suppose the latter just needs a little more time for the older folk 'in charge' to catch on! Stupid word policing.
  21. phishtaper brings up some good points. policing language is a pretty dangerous thing. what one word means to me, could mean something entirely different to another. i really can't grasp how we can enforce appropriate language on an entire nation of individuals. do we now incorporate the dictionary under law? how can we reach out to every single household and explain to them what the genuine definition of a word is and tell them that using that word in any other circumstance or under any other meaning is completely unacceptable? to me, that seems completely ridiculous. i find the more we cater to the politically correct, the more we lose sight of what the real issues are. the real issue above is that a child was bullied for being a mormon, not that the bullier used the term 'gay'.
