  1. It sure is a different headspace to invest so much time into following a band around. The more I run this rat race the less foolish it seems. I have lots of kids so I'll keep running I guess...but if I were free who knows....I'd probably try touring my own music around.... Anyway any music that really moves you is something to be grateful for.....unless it's white supremist anthems or some such.....part of the magic of music is the shared experience-in fact perhaps the original manifestation of music was a social phenomenon rather than individual..... ..............
  2. I wonder about new bands due to the glut you mention-it's all up to fate and destiny. It seems to me that there are a few bands to compare to them now such as Moe etc.... I don't think anyone needs to replace phish for quite a while as they are so young.... I think the Dead however were a once in a century (millenium) phenomenon. With their historical and social significance still unrivaled and their individual and collective genius....I don't know that we'll see that again. While phish is a great band with huge talent I don't think it's hard to imagine a group coming along to rival them....there already are bands to rival them. They're kind of like frank Zappa meets the dead without the crass individual genius of Frank or the prophetic literature of Hunter and seemingly preordained spiritual magic that sometimes arises throughout history. They have their trip and are very grateful for it I'm sure. I can see another band coming down the pike though with as much up their sleeve. Acceptance and popularity are the thing though......a band gets to a tipping point where they get exponentially more popular just because they're already popular. It almost overwhelmed the Dead scene where there were more people there to see what was going on than there were people who made things go on by the end.....the Dead are another story though.....
  3. ...perhaps this is more accurate...I'm not sure....this is serious stuff...
  4. I don't mean to drag this on forever but I've been out of town all week so couldn't say so before....but thanks for your enthusiasm it is really appreciated. I don't know that we would have sounded like a 'good' band without your positive energy but we only managed to play together a few times before this gig and obviously weren't a band before. We got together when Chris Paul asked me if I could put together some Dead music for a Jerry tribute night and it was tricky with everyone's schedule and various life crisis' etc....... We do plan on playing some more and hopefully become an actual good band and hopefully play for you all again some day. We're not sure or defined in what direction we may go-we may do shows that are Dead tributes again-or not we just don't really know. We definitely want to learn more Dead music as we all love it and there are always more songs that each wants to learn. I always want to play music with that spirit and with that attitude and write a lot of music so would like to include that as well and not be strictly a tribute band but we will see what we will see. There is also a lot of music written by others that fits into that Dead feeling as you know when you see all the covers they have done over the years. There is no grand plan and other players have their own thoughts so I suppose I'm just thinking out loud here..... I hope you will come and see the Next of Kin again! (not a highly original name I know but it seems to fit somehow and was the one name we could all agree on-if you've ever tried to name a band you already know that it is a process that can go on for quite a long time)..... Peace out!
  5. And you should have seen Georgie's mullet a month or so ago it was even more awesome if that can be believed....
  6. It must be bittersweet to have a video of your lovely lady on the last night her buns were still intact....for my part I'm sorry I contributed to them being danced off. You can at least be assured that it is the best way to go for buns. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Hux's fault as he didn't play anything approaching rhythmical on this particular (or perhaps any other) night....perhaps we can blame Dave B the drummer as he can't defend himself here. He'd like nothing better than to have buns; danced off or otherwise.....and I can't blame him...
  7. Mullet man is my friend George from work-just happened by serendipitously as his party in Vincent Massey Park got busted by police looking for a flasher....he's a good climber and rigger (walks the beams above the rink at Scotiabank hanging all the motors for the truss and PA above my (our) head(s) for all the concerts there) Anyhoo thanks all for coming out and having a real good time....I suppose Hux didn't really sux all that much.....chickened out on the short shorts and leather vest though...ah well I guess you can't have everything..... Special thanks actually to Hux and Terry Calder for extra work picking up the PA system and dropping it off after the show for no pay.... we knew the band was playing for free but hoped we wouldn't have to do all the labour....ah well some day maybe....made for a long haul-about 12 hours all in all....nice work fellas. Thanks also to Jared for doing a great job on sound and hauling equipment as well at a reduced rate of pay. Thanks to Chris Paul for coming up for the $ for the equipment and soundman. We wanted to play for free originally but then suggested a cover charge when we figured out how much it would cost for everything but he said he would pay himself.
  8. Guys in short shorts and leather vests will do anything for a cavity search-he'll be there....
  9. I fail to see how this Gonzo style posting is going to get Hux into his short shorts and leather vest.....let's focus here and remember what's important..
  10. Hunter: How about "Come drive Uncle John's Truck?" Garcia: That's not quite it. It's a little too ...um, secular Hunter: Ok, ok, how about ...(pregnant pause) "Come hear Uncle John's jazz records?" Garcia: That's getting closer, but it's still not a big enough image for what I want this song to say ... Hunter: Let's see: how about "Come hear Uncle John's Band?" Garcia: Naah, that's going in the wrong direction ... maybe a little too ... how would you say... Bravissimo. Hunter: Probably. So you want something non-secular and big, but not too big, and you want it to rhyme with what? Garcia: Cumquat. Hunter: Any particular reason? Garcia: It came to me in a dream. Hunter: I won't argue with that, but look, if you'll spot me Uncle John's Band, I'll add Buck Dancer's choice & raise you a crow. Garcia: I'll see that and raise you a silver mine. Spot me a violin and we can lose the cumquat. Hunter: But what about your dream? Garcia: A dream is just a place to stand while you're trying to find your feet. Hunter: Mind if I use that? Garcia: No, it might give people the wrong impression. Hunter: Yeah, dammit, you're right. Garcia: Never dick with the dream. Hunter: You said a mouthful!
  11. Can you all wear name tags so I know who you are.....I know Hux....he'll be the one in the short shorts and the vest....and I know who Bouche is because I saw him in a photo trying to hide Hux's vest from the camera....must have suspected that he (Hux) would come to regret his passion for such fashion foibles.....
  12. Believe me.....with some of the acts I work with Sting is a treat...
  13. .....btw I think we'll call ouselves The Next of Kin....wish I could be at Waba but have to work-luckily it's with Sting and the London Philharmonic Orcestra (?)....
  14. Technically we won't be TMNS as all the members are not involved-I am still in (Dave Muir) lead guitar and vocals as usual, Terry Calder TMNS drummer is actually on guitar and vocals, Dave Bissessar from the Longbottom days is on drums and our own Geoff Smith on bass and vocals-we may throw in a keys player if we can find one but time is running out. Dr. Evil Mouse will play a few tunes on acoustic and maybe some others as well....we don't want to have too many performers like last time where TMNS couldn't go on until almost 2 AM.....
  15. Btw what do you think the attendance was like? I was shocked by how few people were there when I arrived and didn't get much of an idea on numbers after as all I could see were those damned lizards!
  16. That was terrific indeed! I think still that I was most happy that they played just a lovely walk down the river from my backdoor! It was great hanging with some friends and family and just strolling down to see the band. I learned that perhaps I should not have eaten so many brownies-with the heat and baking it was all I could do to stay on my feet. Luckily I was in the gold circle area and not surrounded by sweaty bodies-probably would have done me in. My wife has a bad back too so it was good she could lean on the chairs and sit when needed. Interesting and rocking set which I really enjoyed even though I felt like Hunter S Thompson or some such. Were you aware that the woman singing with them is the daughter of Ken Kesey and Mountain Girl? Lynn's review in the Citizen was a little lame but I think she was trying to speak from an outsiders view. She used to come to all my Longbottom gigs way back when and has been to grateful dead concerts in the eighties-she doesn't necessarily call it her favourite style of music and probably retreated from it for many years.....looked for her in the FOH where she said she'd be but didn't see her.....nobody there but lizards. It was a real treat taking my daughters there and was quite moved seeing them have a good time-they saw the Grateful Dead when they were babies but that's not quite the same.
  17. Wow! Glad we didn't lose the man....he's too good to go!
  18. What? When was this gig? That's my hood... I would have dug this....
  19. Hey I started the thread...do I have to make my own dinner too?
  20. Unbelievable! I can't wait for game 8!
  21. Sucks......given the choice of ending up in a country lead by Obama or a country lead by Stephen Harper I'm not sure he's not better off though.....
  22. It would not be the first time an NHL player spent the night in jail from his on ice actions....of course I know he wasn't in the NHL at the time but I only really know NHL players have done time (at least overnight)....don't know about players at other levels...
