  1. I'm 99.9% sure the Barr Brothers set at Czehoski sold out. My buddy at Live Nation said he grabbed the last ticket about a week ago, but maybe they've released more or will let you in at the door? Might be worth calling ahead. Just a heads up.
  2. Now only if BSS brings them on tour with them...
  3. Since they're here for CMF, today's artist mixtape features an excellent band called Wool On Wolves http://theartistmixtapes.com/2011/03/11/volume-11-wool-on-wolves/
  4. Here's a bit of a review from the show last night (real one to come tomorrow on blogTO) The show was at the Dakota Tavern which is an amazing and small place to see a rock show in Toronto. It's a tiny little basement saloon, with a barely elevated stage. I was speaking with Brad before the show and asked him if he's ever been here before and he said no. I told him maybe they should play more of their rockier stuff because it probably wouldn't be quiet and he said they were going to adjust the setlist. He also told me Andrew isn't playing with Land of Talk anymore...I also requested they play "Kisses from Chelsea" (which they did). So the Barr Brothers took stage at about 2 am - ish to a fairly packed Dakota Tavern. Setlist: Beggar in the Morning (some sound issues on this one) Give the Devil Back His Heart Kisses From Chelsea Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Cryin' Deacon's Son Cloud (a much more aggressive version than they typically play) Encore: If You Leave Me In the end it was a really solid show from the gang. They got a huge reaction from the crowd at the end of the set, and it turn's out Kevin Drew (of Broken Social Scene) and a few other guys from BSS were in the audience and congratulated and shot the shit with The Barr Brothers at the end of the show. Pretty cool considering it's Canadian Music Fest and there was like 50 shows last night to see the BSS guys out to support the Barrs. Photos and a real review to come tomorrow, I'll post links. Can't wait to see the guys tomorrow night in what's sure to be a quieter atmosphere (seeing them at a restaurant that holds probably 40 people max)
  5. Hey all, Volume 10 of The Artist Mixtapes features one of my personal favourites, Mr. Marco Benevento http://theartistmixtapes.com/2011/03/09/volume-10-marco-benevento/ Enjoy!
  6. Today's Artist Mixtape features a really cool band that just moved to Toronto called Fast Romantics. I've seen this group twice now and they're going to do well for themselves. Playing MTV this week too! http://theartistmixtapes.com/2011/03/08/volume-9-fast-romantics/
  7. the band cleared off during Attics, it was just Teresa, Amy and Larry on this one.
  8. My review of Levon Helm's show at Massey Hall on Friday night http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/03/levon_helm_lives_up_to_legendary_status_at_massey_hall/
  9. Splitcrow on a Sunday is a wild time, perhaps a bit too overwhelming for some. Very cheap beer (like $1/beer) and some live music. Big University scene. A shit-show in short. Also, it's a early afternoon thing.
  10. My review of Plants and Animals' show on Saturday night at Lee's Palace over on blogTO http://backin15minutes.com/2011/03/07/a-rock-and-roll-apology-from-plants-and-animals/
  11. They have a bunch of new material, they played a much more adventurous set the next night in Montreal. I guess they wanted to hit Toronto with some of their better rehearsed stuff seeing as how they haven't played here in about a year. They probably felt more comfortable testing out newer material in their hometown of Montreal. Maybe they'll play some of the newer stuff (which is great) at the Dakota on Thursday. I'm particularly fond of this new song: Went to Market (tentative title)
  12. Volume 8 of The Artist Mixtapes comes from the Acid House Kings http://tinyurl.com/62gg5fo
  13. My review of The Low Anthem's Thursday night show at The Great Hall over on blogTO http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/03/the_low_anthem_keep_it_simple_at_the_great_hall/
  14. Definitely agree about the drumming. Jeff was certainly hitting hard. He should take some notes from Andrew Barr who seems to have mastered the art of delicate percussion. While The Barr Brothers set may not have been all that adventurous in regards to what they have and can do (and what I've seen them do) they still continue to amaze and astound me every time I see them. Most interesting musicians on the scene (for me at least). I hope Brad and Andrew never sit still....
  15. There will be a full review posted on blogTO tomorrow. I'll provide links when it's live. Setlist looked something like this, I think I could be missing a few songs and I'm not 100% where Love and Alter fell in the set. Ghost Woman Blues Sally, Where'd You Get Your Liquor From? Burn Apothecary Love Hey All You Hippies! Matter of Time Ticket Taker Home I'll Never Be (slowed version) Ohio Blues (cover) Love and Alter Encore: Smart Flesh Charlie Darwin Barr Brothers CMF details: They'll be playing the Dakota Tavern this coming Thursday @ 2am and The Czehoski a week this Saturday @ 10pm. Not 100% sure those times are correct as they made a change on the time in the header of the FB event but not in the body...typical Barr Brothers lack of organization
  16. Last night's show was pretty great. A little disappointed the Barrs only played for like 35 minutes, but what can you do, they're here twice next week. The Low Anthem was awesome, as per usual. They've certainly eclipsed their friends, but I think that's largely because they have good mgmt, pr, marketing skills whereas the Barr Brothers have basically none and never try to. All of my buddies left saying they enjoyed the barrs a lot more. My review of the show is going to be up on blogTO tomorrow. I'm also covering The Barr Brothers twice during CMW so there will be two nice reviews of them with lots of pics to come. Barr Brothers setlist: Old Mythologies Deacon's Son Let There Be Horses Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Cryin' Beggar in the Morning Soundcheck: Give the Devil Back His Heart Kisses from Chelsea (tentative title) Went to Market (tentative title) there was probably more but this is all I heard
  17. Today I'm really honored to feature a mixtape from one of my favourite groups, The Low Anthem http://theartistmixtapes.com/2011/02/28/volume-7-jeff-prystowsky-of-the-low-anthem/ Hope everyone is trying to catch their show in Toronto or MTL Enjoy the tape!
  18. Couldn't be more excited for Wednesday's show. Pretty awesome that between the show and CMF you can catch The Barr Brothers 3 times in a week and a half.
  19. The fact that it takes place in Bangkok means it will live up to the hype. Bangkok is the most lawless place in South East Asia. You better believe there will be a 'ping-pong' scene in Hangover 2, for those of you who don't know what a ping-pong show is, Google it and prepare to be shocked and appalled. I caught one this summer while in Thailand and it's pretty mental.
  20. Volume 6 of The Artist Mixtapes comes from Lissie http://theartistmixtapes.com/2011/02/25/volume-6-lissie/ Her mixtape includes the Dead and Phish!
  21. go to Brooklyn Bowl - it's the shit also go to Shake Shack in Madison Square Park for amazing burgers which you get to eat outdoors (plenty of heating lamps no worries) ...just keep eating, food is the best thing about nyc. oh, the highline park in the meat packing district is also really cool, there's a really wicked beer hall right below the central part of it with tons of ping pong tables and just a really cool vibe.
  22. Just posted the latest mixtape featuring Iron and Wine! http://tinyurl.com/4w4vd4c
