  1. Blast from the past... Canadian Jam scene had it's day.. incidentally it's alive and well here in the good ol' USA High Plains Drifter - Original band that I formed at St. F.X. university disbanded back in 2006, a few years after I relocated back to Toronto. I revived the material with members of Chameleon Project, Heavyweights Brass Band, Wassabi Collective, Drumhand and many Humber College Students. Became my solo project, we kept the spirit alive playing mostly in Toronto with random members, simplified arrangements, sort of a free for all... Band played alongside Moses Mayes, Fort Knox Five, Femi Kuti, Orogone, Tea Leaf Green. Over time we moved away from the acid jazz fusion sound to afrobeat, ethio-jazz sound & reggae. House of David Gang backing band became High Plains Drifter (often featuring late keyboardist James Gray formerly of Blue Rodeo) between 2008 and 2012 toured to the East Coast serveral times and always had special guests. Wasn't exactly a serious project, but had a blast - I was more focused on being a promoter. Our biggest claim to fame might be having been "shredded" on youtube, someone redubbed the music from our performance at Evolve Fest in 2004. Fond memories indeed!
  2. intimate venue... on Bathurst just North of Queen... CP to debut some new material from their forthcoming album... Jamie Kidd is also a killer DJ, just back from living in Berlin... he was CP's original bass player before he became a Globe Trotting DJ/Producer.

Dec 20th at Wrongbar presented in associations with Monster Energy, DNA Selections & Nufunk Concerts. The Freestylers were featured last month as featured guest on BBC Radio 1's "Essential Mix." It's a hard hitting old school breakbeat set, just as you remember them: http://www.soundcloud.com/freestyler...-essential-mix THE FREESTYLERS (UK, Fingerlickin' Records) Freestylers: The official website of the Freestylers. Featuring all their latest music, videos, gig dates and photos. The Freestylers began their career as an Urban Electronic Music Act, and their early tunes ‘B-Boy Stance,’’ ‘Ruffneck’ and ‘Warning’ set the marker. As their music progressed so did their anthems with the seminal tunes ‘Punks’, ‘Boom Blast’, ‘Fasten Your Seat-Belts,’ ‘Painkiller’ and more recently ‘Cracks.’ In addition to their status as underground heroes, they have gained commercial success with their huge global hit ‘Push Up’ and have had their music featured in TV and film, including the hugely successful comedy film Zoolander. Their ever-eclectic style and renegade approach to production focusing on everything in the bass music spectrum and is once again on show with their fifth studio album ‘The Coming Storm’ released on BlackHole/Rub-A-Duck Recordings June 2013. With the new addition to their production team Chris Bishop from Stereo:Type they’ve ramped up their sound into overdrive. Whether they’re performing as a live band, sound system or DJ set, you know they are gonna rock hard.
  4. Rock Scully (born August 1, 1941 - died December 16, 2014) was the manager of The Grateful Dead from 1965 to 1985. He is the co-author with David Dalton of the book Living With The Dead. "Living in The Haight before and during the Summer of Love, Scully first saw the band play at one of Ken Kesey's Acid Tests under the name "The Warlocks". He signed on as the band's manager almost immediately. He started to book the band at small local venues like The Fillmore, a place where many bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & The Holding Company, and Quicksilver Messenger Service got their start." I loved the book, it really showed the inner-workings / dysfunctional family of the Grateful Deal. I read it so quickly, I almost feel I need to go back to remember the whole story... one big piece was that Rock was the fall guy for the whole Rolling Stons / Hell's Angels at Alamont debacle. his relationship with the Dead didn't end well...

  11. EMBRACE PRESENTS THE WILD FEATHERS with THE APACHE RELAY & DESERT NOISES Wednesday, November 12, 2014 Lee’s Palace, 529 Bloor St. W, Toronto, ON “The Wild Feathers channel their Nashville roots with fast-stepping, unmistakably Southern country-rock suggesting a sprightly union of My Morning Jacket and Neil Young” - The New York Times Embrace proudly presents the return of The Wild Feathers on Wednesday November 12 at Lee’s Palace, in support of their self-titled, critically lauded debut album (Warner). After spending last year opening for Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, American rock quintet The Wild Feathers have announced that they will hit the road for additional tour dates this fall. The seemingly indefatigable Nashville group has continued to organically grow its audience at a rapid pace, with constant touring and barn-storming shows at clubs around the world and festivals across the country, including Bonnaroo, Firefly, and Summerfest this past summer. It’s no wonder that Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Gary Clark Jr., Sheryl Crow, Paul Simon and countless others have become fans of their hybrid take on rock, country, folk & classic soul informed by masterful song craft, souring vocal harmonies and infused with Stones/Faces- swagger. Don’t miss the band that Rolling Stone describes as recalling “the magic of Tom Petty and Neil Young,” when The Wild Feathers visit Lee’s Palace next Wednesday with The Apache Relay and Desert Noises. MORE INFORMATION HERE: http://www.thewildfeathers.com/ Advance tickets $20.50 (plus s.c.) on sale now at ticketweb.ca, Rotate This & Soundscapes. 19+ Event · Doors 7:30pm · Show 8:30pm

The Brooklyn-based dance trio Tortured Soul isn’t trying to intently rewrite the logic of today’s EDM with the sweat of their own musicianship, but they are living proof that the very same music can be freed from the DJ booth. Influenced by the classic songcraft of Prince, Heatwave and Kool & The Gang, the members of Tortured Soul are three distinctive guys with three different backgrounds, united under a groove-centered rhythm. The band’s frontman and principal songwriter, John-Christian Urich, can be seen simultaneously drumming and singing with effortless mastery, while the rest of the collective, made up of keyboardist Ethan White and bassist Jordan Scannella, virtuosically generate the pulsating accompaniment. It’s a striking visual that’s feverishly winning converts with each and every tour stop, with them being likened to The Roots of house music. Inside the group’s mystique, the acid jazz is reminiscent of Jamiroquai funk, while deeply saturated in the contemporary freshness of house purveyors like Joey Negro, Kenny Dope, Soul Clap and Jamie Jones. Even the legendary tastemaker Gilles Peterson, dubbed them “the future of house music.”

  20. Loved that achive post Velvet! It's sad that the place is shutting down. Sam & Co had no clue how to make El Mocambo work. They thought bringing back classic rock was going to work, essentially thinking that getting April Wine and Trooper back to play the club was going to revive them. Delusions of The Stones or U2 coming back for a surprise show. They changed their programming too much and alienated the loyal crowd. They fired Yvonne Mastell who booked the downstairs room a few months after the sale to Sam from Abbas Jahangiri... that was the begining of the end. I worked as the main club booker for the upstairs room 2004-2009 and kept booking shows there after. I probably did 150 shows there highlights were The Slip, Benevento Russo Duo, The Jimmy Swift Band, Bassnectar, Grand Theft Bus, Slowcoaster, That 1 Guy, A.Skillz, Krafty Kuts, Vorcza Trio, Julie Dorion, Fred Eaglesmith, Drums & Tuba, Afrika Bambaataa, Dream Band, Truth & Rights, Friendlyess, Selassie I Power, Resinators, Chameleon Project, Vanderpark, God Made Me Funky, King Sunshine, Jazzanova, Bullfrog, Thomas Mapfumo, Slammin Jack, Guerrila Dub Squad, Word People, KaeSun, Big League Chu, Fort Knox Five, Fat Cats, Diesel Dog, Mark Wilson & The Way it is, Caution Jam, The Bunnies, Soulive, Jon Butler Trio, Fertile Ground, Blue Quarter, Moses Mayes, Koybashi, New Kingston, DJ Chocolate, Progress, Gisto, Irie Band, House of David Gang, High Plains Drifter so many others... It's sad for Toronto live music scene, with the right vision it could have kept the spirit of independent original music... I know the more recent owners had good intentions, but that wasn't ultimately enough. RIP eL MOCAMBO.
