This 7-show swing honours the life and messages of peace and hope of reggae's spiritual father, the immortal Bob Marley, who would have turned 65 years old this year. The House of David Gang has rapidly developed a following on the East Coast; having performed at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, Evolve Festival and Salty Jam as well as over a dozen club shows across the Maritimes. They have earned a reputation as one of Canada's top Roots Reggae outfits. Robert “Bob†Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican musician, singer-songwriter and Rastafarian. He was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 – 1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience. Marley’s best known hits include “I Shot the Sheriffâ€, “No Woman, No Cryâ€, “Exodusâ€, “Could You Be Lovedâ€, “Stir It Upâ€, “Jammingâ€, “Redemption Songâ€, “One Love†and, together with The Wailers, “â€Three Little Birdsâ€, as well as the posthumous releases “Buffalo Soldier†and “Iron Lion Zionâ€. The compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, three years after his death, is the best-selling reggae album ever (10 times platinum), with sales of more than 12 million copies. Even today nearly 30 years after his death, the name Bob Marley is recognized by old and young alike around the world. Reggae’s most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley’s music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country’s impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on through the music of his extended family as well as generations of artists the world over touched by his genius. HOUSE OF DAVID GANG (Toronto) http://www.myspace.com/houseofdavidgang One of Canada's top roots reggae collectives, The House of David Gang specialize in the timeless and classic Jamaican sound of the 1970s and early 80s. 13. 45 rpm! d'oh - I'm such a newb!
  14. Happy New Years to you all. I have recently bought a DJ mixer off Tungsten Gruven and I'm now happily DJying at home - on two Techinic 1200s. I've dusted off my old record collection of mostly classic rock albums. I've got rarities from Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsy, Steven Stills solo albums (that also feature Hendrix on them), David Bowie, Elivis Colstello, CCR, Derek & The Dominos, Simon & Garfunkel, Talking Heads, The Police, Alice Cooper, Lots of Zepplin and it's been great to hear all the great music again. I've got some lesser known stuff by Booker T & The MGs, Robin Trower, Gill Scott Herron, Weather Report, Ahmad Jamal, War, Santata and a great copy of the Dead's Anthem of the Sun. There's something about handling the vinyl and the needle to the record that really enhancing the music enjoyment experience. There's a warm to the music from that era and hearing it on CD doesn't have the same je-ne-sais-quoi! In that spirit, I've been drawn lately to the 45 inch singles, specifically reggae and funk 45s. I'm on a quest to build a strong collection. It's inspiring to talk to the collectors and record stores about the medium. One thing the say about 45s is that the grooves on the record are deeper than the LPs, and because the 45 record is spinning at a higher speed, the quality is much better than what you'd find on the full length. I'm finding it a lot of fun and once I have a mix to share with you I'll post it here. I'm going to be traveling for the next month, first to France and then to Atlantic Canada & back - planning on spending any off time looking for rare grooves. Can anyone help suggest some good record stores in Southern Ontario that would be worth Checking out. I'm going to be in Ottawa, Kingston, Fredericton, Saint John, Halifax, Montreal. Anyone have some old vinyl for sale? big ups to all the skanks in 2010! Jay jay@nufunk.ca

A lot of things have happened since a young Andy Carthy started answering to the name Mr Scruff – making a name for himself under the shadow of Manchester’s mid 90s club scene.
