  1. Bill Bruford has always impressed me as a drummer. I've seen him play with King Crimson a number of times. I remember being most impressed when I saw Crimson tour as the "double-trio," with two drummers, two bass/stick players, and two guitarists. Bruford was on one kit, and Pat Mastelotto was on the other one, and both drummers were hitting lots of drums. Part way through the show I noticed that Mastelotto was covered in sweat. At that moment, Bruford, looking totally refreshed, decided to take off his sports coat. I guess he was getting a little warm from playing! I'm not a drummer and never really noticed his technique, but he must have lots of it.

I look forward to hearing about the clinic TimmyB.

  2. Hey Shain,

I read through the comments about your PATD article and yes, some of them are a bit much, but I think that many of the comments do reflect valid points from the site's readers. You state in your opening post that "We're trying to diversify ..." which is fair enough, but it's also fair if people who currently visit the site are concerned about the diversification and the direction the site is headed in. You can't be all things to all people, so any changes in strategy will likely upset some people. That's just the way it is. I guess the folks at jambase will have to decide if the change in approach is worth it. Having said that, there's nothing like a little controversy to get people commenting and interested in something. ;):)

  3. Hey Jay,

Sorry it won't work out for connecting with you in BC, but totally understandable. I'm still waiting for a time and/or teleportation machine to make it easier to connect with people. :)

I'm not sure if I have Kayte's email, so if you message it to me that would be great. Having said that, the week and upcoming weekend are looking pretty packed, so I'm not sure if I'll be making it to the Hammer. But the Fatties on Sat. night is tempting ...

    Peace, Mark

  4. Hey Jay!

I hope that you and Kayte are doing well out in beautiful BC. I wish I could also be at this Garaj Mahal show, but I'll be back in Ontario the day before. I am going to hit up the two Vancouver shows though. Any chance you'll be in Vancouver for the shows, or is the distance too great and/or do you have other plans?

Wishing you both all the best, and hope to connect with you in person at some point in the not-too-distant future.

    Peace, Mark

  5. I'm due for a dose of Jomomma. I've missed them the last few times that they were in KW, and I love their heavy funky grooves! And they are still one of my son's favourite bands. Hopefully they'll play at a kid-friendly event in the not-too-distant future so that I can bring him out to a show.

    Peace, Mark

  6. I'm super-excited about the two Garaj Mahal shows! I'm flying out to Vancouver to visit my brother for a few days over NYE, and we're going to hit up both shows. I've never seen this band before, but the live audio I've downloaded and listened to sounds fantastic ... these musicians can play and I love the funky jazzy grooves and cool tones. I'm envisioning a raging dance party!

    Peace, Mark

  7. The absolute highlight for me was when Todd Gillies and Josh Williams from Fat Cats joined the band as guests. I was a puddle of joy when they played the Fatties song Rotan ... thank you so much to Burt for making this happen ... it sounded great! Todd also stayed on stage for BNB's Waves.

There was a great crowd at the Opera House for this show. At the start of set two, the whole lower dance floor was full of people, plus there were people at the back around the bar and some upstairs. I'm not sure what that means numbers wise, but it was awesome to see so many familiar faces from over the years come out to this show.

There was a HUGE number of guests, and I had to cut out early (at about 1:30) so I'm sure I missed some stuff as well. I'm sure many people are still celebrating, but the reports will eventually start trickling in.

    Peace, Mark

  8. I like SCI, particularly their recordings from 1999 and 2000. I've had a great time at a few SCI concerts, but I was also disappointed with the last Toronto show I saw (Big Summer Classic) ... the next night I saw the Burt Neilson Band and thought that they should have headlined the Big Summer Classic instead. Seriously. Having said that, I'll miss the Cheese, as they provided me with lots of sweet music and fond memories over the years.

    Peace, Mark

  9. I'm very excited that I will be heading to Vancouver for a few days at the end of December to visit my brother, and as a HUGE added bonus, we'll get to spend some quality time together at a couple of Garaj Mahal shows! I've never seen this band live before but am very impressed with the live recordings I have heard ... these guys can play!

    Peace, Mark
