  1. Hopefully people don't feel a sense of disrespect when honest opinons are expressed in a tactful manner. As a CTMF supporter, I know that I don't have a problem with people expressing their thoughts and feelings about the festival, or about anything in general. Having said that, it does upset me when people criticize in a way that is extremely harsh or insulting. I don't read anything of that nature in this thread. I guess it's the school teacher coming out in me ... I'm always pushing for "constructive criticism" in my classes.

  2. FYI, the specific schedule for the May long weekend should be posted at some point next week. As far as I know, here is some info for people - I am 99% sure that this is correct:

Friday - Jomomma, Tala and Cavern

Saturday - The Resinators, The New Shady Groove, That 1 Guy, and lots of other bands

Sunday - The Jimmy Swift Band, Diesel Dog, Caution Jam, Steve Murphy & Crazy Stickbird (CD Release), and lots of other bands

Looks like a pretty sweet lineup to me!!! :: :: :)!!!

Some CTMF "regulars", some guaranteed dance parties, and some acts I've never seen before. A nice mix, in my humble opinion.

  3. Yes, there will be a Canada Day Come Together Music Fest at Izzy's. Originally there was not going to be one, but now there is, on July 1, 2, 3, and 4. There will also be a Labour Day festival.

I personally think that Izzy's is a great venue. Yes, in many ways, I doubt that any venue could match Frontier Ghost Town, but Izzy's does have some distinct advantages, including a lake on site, big trees for shade, flush toilets, etc. And don't get me wrong, I love the saloon for late night music, but last year the music at Izzy's went on for much longer than it would have been allowed on the outdoor stage at Frontier Ghost Town.

I think people would have a hard time finding a campground to camp at over the May long weekend for much cheaper ... and many of those places wouldn't have any live music at all!

When a festival becomes larger and "legit", the costs increase. That's just the nature of things. It's cheaper to run something under-the-table than it is above-board. The Come Together Music Festivals have got to the point where they are too big to run as small private parties.

Bottom line for me, I can think of nowhere else I'd rather be for the May long weekend than at the Come Together Music Fest. Hopefully lots of other people feel the same way as I do and we can continue to enjoy this local, grassroots music festival. See you there!

    Peace, Mark

  4. I just got this email from the Circus Room:

    -----

In light of Matt's premature death, we felt that it was important to consult with the avid Jammers if the Jam Night should continue.

I am very pleased to advise that the Circus Room will continue to host the Jam night on Tuesday. The Jam night will be called Matt Osborne Jam Night. The fee that used to be paid to Matt to facilitate the Jam will be donated to the The Matt Osborne Musicians Trust Fund". This was the best way we found to carry on Matt's work.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Drumming for Peace: Kitchener-Waterloo's Largest Drum Circle

Kitchener-Waterloo, ON - The University of Waterloo Drum Circle is hosting a free community drum circle on June 5, 2004. Event organizers anticipate this could be the largest drum circle ever held in Kitchener-Waterloo. All

ages are welcome. Bring your family and friends, as well as any drums and percussion you have, and lawn chairs. If you don't have a drum, you can create one out of empty plastic water jugs, pots, or pans.

The Drumming for Peace drum circle is part of Conflict Resolution Network Canada's PeaceFest 2004 Conference

(http://www.nicr.ca/conference/peacefest.asp). As Gabrielle Roth said, "Rhythm is the mother tongue. It's the one language we all speak." The drum circle can represent the perfect expression of communication necessary

for peace and conflict resolution. In drumming together, we transcend our differences.

Donations of money or used clothing will be accepted by the Mennonite Central Relief Committee. There will also be displays by non-governmental organizations working locally and internationally for peace, as well as local musicians and cultural groups.

The drum circle will run from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at the Clock Tower in Victoria Park, off Charles Street in Kitchener.

Man oh man is this coming soon ... can't wait!!!:: ::!!!

  7. The people that I went with to the last show thoroughly enjoyed it. They are going to go to this show as well, and they are bringing a few more of their friends along. If this pattern of behaviour is representative of most of the people that went to the last show (and I think it will be), then yes, I would expect that this show will sell out sooner than it did last time.

Little Feat with Diesel Dog opening in Hamilton ... makes me smile and grin with excited anticipation! :) ::

    Peace, Mark

  8. Hey Shain,

Sounds good, I'm going to try to make it to this show for sure. I heard some of the Contact cd a month or so ago and thought it sounded really good. And I know people have been impressed with them.

Just curious, what happened to The New Shady Groove? I thought they were on the bill? And how about Six Foot Groove? They were also originally on the bill. Are they now officially disbanded, or are they just taking a break and regrouping? Samsara ... I'm pretty sure that some of their members used to be in Six Foot Groove ...

Not to forget Mike/Jeremy & friends - that will be a treat I'm sure.

And a friendly reminder about two other upcoming shows at the Lanc that will be a lot of fun:

Sat. May 8 Rose Garland & Harvard Mouse

Fri. May 14 Diesel Dog & Jomomma

Hurray - lots of local stuff for us KW music-heads in the next few weeks.

    Peace, Mark

  9. Darien Lake State Park is about 5 miles? down the road. Unfortunately a bit too far to walk - I'd walk it if there was a sidewalk or nice path, but not on the edge of a highway, especially at night after I (and 20000 others) have been partying. It's not a "party campground" but nobody seemed to mind people being up late and carrying on around camp fires.

I'm going to try out the on-site campground this year - never been to it before, but the idea of being on-site, without the need to get into a motorized vehicle, is pretty appealing. Stayed at the on-site hotel once for a Trey show and that was loads of fun.

I'm not sure of any other campgrounds that are really close, and I've never seen anybody who is allowing camping on their property, although there is a lot of property around the amusement park that somebody could do it and make some bucks.

    Peace, Mark

  10. MuleMomma, I was waiting for you to respond to this thread. Thanks for making me feel young again! :):D ::

Of course, all of Zappa's "Joe's Garage" was up there as well, but we didn't really sing that album.

Definitely a favourite of mine, maybe even more so given that I went to a Catholic high school. Nothing like an album filled with sexual innuendos and commentary (along with some kick-ass music) to interest a teenage boy. My mom is pretty open-minded, but I don't think I ever played the album when she was around, and a friend of mine found his copy in the garbage after his mom heard it. :D

    Oh the memories ...

    Peace, Mark

  11. Is zedonking anything like teabagging? just wondering

Luke, you make me laugh! Just typed teabagging into the google search engine ... glad I searched for this at home and not at school ...

And Paisly, glad you made good use of that late night/early morning time at Willy's. As I started driving home I thought to myself "duh, I should have offered Paisley a ride home, or at least to the bus station." Now I don't feel as guilty leaving you at Willy's! :) ::

  12. Was that Who concert in Toronto in 1982 the one where the fans threw stuff at Joe Jackson and his band and didn't stop until Joe Jackson cut his set really short and left in disgust? People can be obnoxious idiots at times! I remember talking about it with my buddies just after it happened and saying "great, now we get to hang out and wait for a long time, with no band, until the Who comes on."

I thought Joe Jackson was sounding really good. But not necessarily the best band to have open for the Who.

    Peace, Mark

  13. Nyet Nyet Soviet (Soviet Jewellery) ... yep, that's the BB Gabor song that was a hit. I saw him again a year? later in a smaller place in Welland (The Rose Villa) and really enjoyed it ... lots of jazzy/bluesy songs mixed in with the poppy punk hit(s). His song "Hunger Poverty and Misery" is brilliant - at least that's how I remember it. I no longer have the album that I used to own and haven't heard it in ages. I just did a search of BB Gabor and wow, I found this info, including the tragic news about his death that I never knew:

    -----

Born Gabor Hegedus in 1948, his family fled Hungary and the political revolution there to England when he was only 8. Music didn't become a factor in his life until moving to Toronto at age 23. Gabor became a staple of the local underground scene during the late 70's, where his industrial pop/punk sound was pretty much the 'norm'.

His self-titled debut was released by Anthem Records in the spring of 1980. Co-produced by Terry Brown, whose work included among others Stampeders, Max Webster, Klaatu and Rush, it showed an instant sense of maturity, backed by the success of the two singles, "Metropolitan Life" and "Soviet Jewelry". Gabor made two cross-Canada tours, and enoyed the success of other hits from his debut including a remake of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi", "Lazer Love" and the social commentary "Hunger Poverty and Misery". Gabor's youth in the middle of a communist regime was also made known in "Soviet Drug Club".

GIRLS OF THE FUTURE hit the stands a year later. Produced by Gene Martynec, who'd worked with such Canadian stars as Edward Bear and Rough Trade, it continued along the veins put forward by its predecessor. The only single released was "Jealous Girls", a cover of the Extras' hit. Also on the record was some of Gabor's most tightly-written music, including the upbeat "Keep On Dreaming" and "Shake", co-written by Jimi B.

After being cut from Anthem's roster in '83, Gabor's career came and went in spurts, but continued working in the industry the remainder of the decade. Some of his credits included production of The Extras, Ron Hedland and Jimi B, as well as doing session work with Todd Rundgren. Though he reformed a touring group in '87,he was finding the music scene had no room for his brand of pop. In 1990, Toronto Police found Gabor dead in his apartment, the victim of an apparent suicide at the age of 42.

BB Gabor's life was one marred with tragedy, from his childhood in war-torn Hungary, to his struggling just to survive in England, working as a cab driver and even dabbling as a broker in precious metals, to his humble beginnings in the Toronto music scene, to his untimely demise. Though he only recorded two records, he left his mark on the industry by working with some of the industry's best, as well as writting some of Canadian pop's most cutting-edge music.

  14. Ok, maybe I'm a bit biased, but nero's new cd entitled Zedonk is absolutely fantastic! No wait, it's better than that!! Seriously, what an amazing listen!!! I just finished listening to it from start to finish for the first time and at the end of it I had a huge grin on my face.

Recommendation: Buy a copy of this cd, pop it into your cd player, crank it up, and enjoy the ride!

Warning: Don't forget to fasten your seatbelt before pressing play!

  15. This May's Come Together Music Fest is getting more exciting as it draws closer. That One Guy definitely interests and intrigues me. Another band I'm pretty excited to hear that I've never heard before is The New Shady Groove. I recently got a copy of "the new shady groove EP" and I am impressed.

May long weekend at Izzy's ... oh ya!!!

    Peace, Mark

  16. Hey Jay,

When I got the email from the Circus Room I immediately thought of you and Uncle Seth. I knew that you were close to Matt and I remember that he sat in with Uncle Seth and played bass with you when you played at the Circus Room. Really sorry to hear the sad news.

I'll help out in whatever way I can with a show in the KW area, by spreading the word and/or playing a few songs. I'll email you ...

    Peace, Mark

  17. I got this email last night from the Circus Room. I didn't know Matt that well, but he was a great musician and songwriter and will be missed by many I am sure. Here is the email:

    ----------

    Today is a sad day!

I have just been advised that our friend Matt Osborne has passed away, the world has lost a great human being.

Circus Room would like to honour Matt as he gave so much to it.

I was wondering if I could count with your help in putting together an event to honour Matt.

All suggestions are welcome, so please e-mail at your convenience.

Wherever he is, I am sure that he is singing his blues with style!

    ----------

If you do have any suggestions or ideas for an event to honour Matt, please feel free to email me or Irene at the Circus Room (circus@primus.ca).

I don't have any details about Matt's death but will post an update if and when I get some.

    Life is precious ...

    Peace, Mark
