    What is Jazz?

He's still mad 45 years later... and I'm not kidding.

    What is Jazz?

A fine line eh? Phish sounds nothing like Eric Dolphy or Charlie Parker. However, fusion jazz has a lot more in common with rock since that genre at its core is jazz fused with rock. Jazz has more in common with blues as does rock and blues.

That is correct. Ask my uncle for further info.

  5. I just watched the movie last night. It was excellent. One of the best boxing movies I've seen. I love how Sly finally cast a real boxer as his opponent: former light-heavyweight champ Antonio Tarver (the man who twice beat Roy Jones Jr.). The fight scenes were as realistic as Ali or Hurricane, which is no small feat. The camera angles for the fight scenes were authentic - it looked like an HBO production. What separates this film from the heap of bad sports movies is the non-fight scenes are well-written, acted and surprisingly tender and heart-felt - on par with the first Rocky. Watch the bonus material. Some of it is fascinating. Tarver rules!!!

    Superstack

Uriah Heep meets C'mon and Thin Lizzy. Good stuff.
  7. I'm on board as of Sunday. I have some new friends too, like Booche and Badhams
  8. mmm sort of... I find they always have an excellent selection of phresh AfroBeat' date=' World, Funk, Jazz, Reggae, Hip-Hop etc... That suits me just fine! I guess it depends on what your looking for. You won't find top 40 at Rotate. [/quote'] It is excellent for the music you mentioned too, I was just streamlining the store a bit for Asparagus.
  9. Either Bay store at the Eaton Centre (Queen Street and Yonge) or Bloor and Yonge. Those stores kick ass. If you want something really "fancy", try the Church & Wellesley area. That's where Davey Boy always gets his assless pants.
  10. I second that. There's also a store right beside Penguin worth checking out.
  11. That's the place I was thinking of. It's pretty good if not oversized. CD Replay across the street is better.
  12. I'll be watching the Report tonight: http://entertainment1.sympatico.msn.ca/Oshawa+prepares+for+Stephen+Colbert+Day+but+comedian+will+be+a+noshow/Celebs/Gossip/ContentPosting_Dramarama.aspx?isfa=1&newsitemid=22819019&feedname=CP-ENTERTAINMENT&show=False&number=0&showbyline=False&subtitle=&de
  13. I know I won't miss 'em! Phone the venue for tickets this time (re: internet Arcade Fire incident).
  14. Rotate This and Criminal Records sells vinyl. If you want used, walk down Queen Street West past Spadina. There's tons of used stores there with vinyl etc...
  15. The Stripes put on a fucking great rock and blues show. Don't miss them.
  16. Rotate This specializes in indie rock and for artists on really small labels. My favourite record shop is Criminal Records on Queen Street West, one block west of Spadina on the south side. Great CD selection with excellent prices, plus they have a wide variety of cool shirts and other rock paraphernalia. You could also try CD Replay in the Annex (around Bloor and Brunswick). Right near CD Replay is a massive CD store (on the north side of Bloor across the street) - I forgot the name but you can't miss it. The original Sam's at Yonge and Gould is still a really good store. Also, Soundscapes in Little Italy on College Street (near Bathurst) is really good too.

    Culture?

It's all about the music. I find music by The Allmans, Dead, Hendrix and even some of Phish enriching to my soul. I don't care if it connects to anyone else (even though it does). I can't really relate to hardcore scenesters other than on a musical level. The friends I have on this board pre-date the "scene" anyway.

I'd kill for a full concert of these guys in their prime: http://youtube.com/watch?v=JduIWJFGsBE

Yes, Alabama Man, you certainly do need to make me some copies except the Allmans at The Fillmore. I picked up a copy in Greenwich Village a couple of years ago, however it doesn't include the alternate Whipping Post...

This kinda sums up why I love jams (and yes, it doesn't get any rarer ABB-wise than this): http://youtube.com/watch?v=D29T-VhqUNQ

I'm one of the non-dancing Toronto folk. I do groove from time to time when the music is inspiring, but I generally hate dancing for the sake of dancing.
  22. I'm not the best judge of stoner movies - to put it lightly - but I think the original black covered Donnie Darko would be a suitable candidate to the stoner Best Of list. It's also one of the best cult movies of the past 15 years:
  23. Like every best of list, people blur best of with greatest. Freddy is not the greatest rock singer ever, but he was gifted with one of the best pure rock voices... and I think that is the essence of the question.
  24. I really don't like Queen, but appreciate the members in the band and what they brought to the table. Brian May's solos were perfect and Roger Taylor is an unsung vocal rock hero.
  25. I think Freddy is one of the rare singers that can sing any form of rock. His versatility and range is astounding. I believe Jim Morrison would have been a great hard rock singer had he lived... John Lennon could sing whatever he wanted convincingly.
