  9. I loved the Massey Hall Oysterhead show too. I love The Band Of Gypsies and Oysterhead's version of Changes was beautifully powerful and surprisingly controlled.
  10. News is that LeafTV will be free in the near future to subscribers that use the Rogers box. It's one of the worst sports digital pay channels. Raptors TV blows it out of the water and it's free with the cable box.
  11. Exactly. I saw Son Seals twice in concert. The man lost his leg to diabetes and his wife shot him in the face, and yet he wasn't depressed or write songs that made you feel down. That's is the message of blues: Tell a story as a form of therapy.
  12. I just don't think the blues is depressing music. The subject of the the lyrics may be blue, but there's often a sense of humour or straight yet personal storytelling underneath the sung lyric.
  13. Pete has limited range and he often speak/shout-sings, which is lazy, but I agree with your critique. Roger is an interpreter, but he's not always an insightful one.

  17. I love Etta James, Koko Taylor, Billie Holiday and the rest of the blues legends. Blues is the springboard to rock, but these greats don't belong in a rock category - nor do I think they would or do like the rock genre in the first place. Emily is fantastic. Time will tell where she'll rank. She certainly should make modern lists. I like Kim Gordon, but she's a co-singer and occassional front-woman. Same with Kim Deal. I disagree with AD about The Pretenders not being rock. They aren't Hole rock, but they were pretty rocking for the 70's and 80's, far more than Stevie and Christine-led Fleetwood Mac. They may sound pop-rock by today's standards, but back then they were lumped in either new wave or rock. Chrissie's a fine guitarist in her own right and her crunchy Telecaster allowed for her fantastic guitarists to shine like: James Honeyman-Scott, Bill Bremner and Robbie McIntosh. I'm not a real fan of The Pretenders, but to brush them off isn't right.
  18. I don't lump Janice into the list of female rock singers. She was blues to her soul and her soul fueled her blues. Sure, Courtney is this generation's Janice in terms of influence. I'll take Chrissie Hynde as the best female rock singer ever... and Patti Smith for punk.
  19. Well, it's either Prince of David Bowie. You could argue that entire fucked-up decade of the 70's teemed with rock & roll androgyny. David Johanson and Iggy Pop should make the Top 5.
  20. Surprisingly, yesterday's games were uneventful... except for those pukes at Duke losing. Loved that!

Every pub will be packed downtown, but try to find one with a live Irish band like McVeigh's on Church at Richmond (it's a hardcore Irish pub run by an IRA supporter) or one of the Finn McCool's - like the one of the Esplanade (south of Church and Front). Any Irish and/or English/Scottish pub should be a lot of fun. The Duke Of Gloucester on Yonge (one or two blocks north of Wellesley) is a great pub - it's on the second floor (east side)directly across from the Church of Scientology.
