  1. Most of you probably don't know who these people are, but last night I met Joe Bouchard, Albert Bouchard, and Dennis Dunaway.

We tend to view rock stars as "larger-than-life", but when you meet them they're just regular folks, and usually shorter than I thought.

Actually, from all of the shots I've seen of BOC (one of my favorite bands), they have seemed like seriously tiny people.

  2. They suck. :D

But now that i think about it, the comparison is apt. Because when it comes down to it, it's all music on a stage... whether you're playing to 1200 people or 40,000 people doesn't change the fact that you're still up there, doing your thing and making music.

U2 consciously picks their venues, their stage, their corporate sponsors to fund their massive carbon footprint they call a tour. But it still boils down to the music, and that's why i make the comparison... and say they suck. To each their own though. It's all subjective.

Can't believe that I am coming to the defense of a band I haven't followed in over a decade, but ...

$40 million set-up cuz your band can't entertain vs. bare stage and awesomeness:

You didn't state that as though it were subjective, but as fact that the reason their setup was so expensive was because they "can't entertain". Setting aside the fact that U2 were able to build up to the level of a stadium act because evidently a lot of people thought they could entertain, you are comparing their current tour to the Stop Making Sense show (which, far from being just a bare stage, had costumes, props and other visuals). If Talking Heads had ever gotten to be as big as U2, that show wouldn't have worked nearly as well in the venues that U2 has to play due to their popularity, David Byrne would have to come up with even bigger visuals and set pieces that wouldn't get dwarfed by the stadia ... which may well be one of the reasons why he broke up Talking Heads before they got that big, because he had no interest in that scale of performance. And that is why I say the comparison is not apt.

Sure, these days I'd rather enjoy, say, Remain In Light or Stop Making Sense than the latest U2 CD/Tour, but you seem to be attacking them because of their success. You say they consciously pick their venues, are you seriously suggesting that at this stage of the game they go back to playing clubs and theatres? All that is going to do is upset a lot of their fans because they won't be able to get tickets. They are one of the most popular bands in the world (and are you really going to fault a band if they happen to like having a lot of fans?), that is going to end up requiring big venues and big staging. I just can't agree that all this means, by definition, that they "can't entertain".

Gah, gonna go wash out my brain with "The Great Curve" now ...

  3. enjoy em Kev! They rocked tonight, played what I think was a new one called "Get Behind the Mule" which was fantastic!

Also did a killer Hey Joe (first time ever!) and a great Kind of Bird

Get Behind The Mule is a Tom Waits song, they have covered it before.

  4. In case any dudes need convincing, I find Jocie from The Low Anthem to be very attractive. Although I did slow-dance with Andre so my standards have fallen waaaaaaaaaaay below the acceptable limit (no offence Lynn) :)

No foolies about the easy on the eyes part ... so you sent me to Library Voices, you sent me to Low Anthem , you haven't steered me wrong yet, AD.

  5. Guess I was the only one who went to Styx ... damn fine show, really, they mostly played their earlier stuff and didn't do Mr. Roboto (thank god) or much of their cheesier, more MOR , Dennis DeYoung-centric later material. Lawrence Gowan did an admirable job, didn't think he'd be able to take the higher notes but he nailed them. "Crystal Ball" ... where the heck has this song been all my life?

  6. The latest collaboration of Matthew Sweet and Susannah Hofs is going to hit the racks on July 21 ... further proof that God hates me, as I have close to no spare funds right now. Naturally, the theme for Vol. 2 is the '70s (Vol. 1 was almost all '60s covers). Just a tiny bit disappointed as I had heard that there would be a Mott The Hoople song on it and thought, "I hope it isn't 'All The Young Dudes'." (A grand song but kind of overplayed by now.) Well, guess which one they picked? Still , good track list ... looks like Todd Rundgren is to this set what Neil Young was to the last one :

    1. Sugar Magnolia

    2. Go All The Way

    3. Second Hand News

    4. Bell Bottom Blues

    5. All The Young Dudes

    6. You're So Vain

    7. Here Comes My Girl

    8. I've Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People

    9. Hello It's Me

    10. Willin'

    11. Back Of A Car

    12. Couldn't I Just Tell You

    13. Gimme Some Truth

    14. Maggie May

    15. Everything I Own

    16. Beware Of Darkness
