  1. I want to know what the definition of hippy really is.. is it a way of life? or a way of dress? or both? cuz I'm convinced you can be a hippy but look like a wall street shark.. but maybe I'm confused.. cuz I also think punk is an artistic movement and an approach to music making as supposed to a sound popularized by The Sex Pistols

  2. oops.. typo..

it's SWEET PEA, and definitely has nothing to do with Sweet Pea Atkinson :)

from what I could get from the Vinyl Cafe website is that they are from Vancouver and put out on Grin Like A Dog Records..

the only other info I could get about the band was this review of their sophmore release Yardsale

  3. so.. I was listening to The Vinyl Cafe on Sunday and Mr. Mclean played a track by this band Sweet Pea.. does anyone know much about them? the track was cool.. I'm interested in maybe hunting a record down or something.

  4. Are acts compensated for performing (paid)? I'd think so, I don't think giving out free passes to acts would be a good idea, a lot of acts are on tour / from out of town anyways and wouldn't use them, plus giving out too much free stuff in addition to paying artists has to affect the bottom line for regular paying audience members somehow...

yes we are paid and yes I agree that it would affect the bottom line and all that.. but it would be nice for the local bands (and they don't book many of them).. but it's cool.. for me just playing something like bluesfest is payment enough.. the rest is just bonus!

  5. I'm painting, I'm painting again.

    I'm painting, I'm painting again.

    I'm cleaning, I'm cleaning again.

I'm cleaning, I'm cleaning my brain.

Pretty soon now, I will be bitter.

Pretty soon now, will be a quitter.

Pretty soon now, I will be bitter.

You can't see it 'til it's finished

    I don't have to prove...that I am creative!

I dont' have to prove...that I am creative!

    All my pictures are confused

And now I'm going to take me to you.

  6. The Crowd will be getting ready for their second bluesfest mainstage appareance this weekend with two and a half gigs. The half gig is an appearance on Breakfast @ The NewRO tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

The other two gigs are this weekend at Tucson's roadhouse. We will be there both Friday and Saturday night from 9:00 until 1:00.

For those of you not in the know, The Crowd is a 12 piece roots r&b/soul band with some blues and horn rock thrown in for good measure.

I'll post a reminder tomorrow but just so you you all know, we will be opening the mainstage on Saturday July 17th at Bluesfest, which I think will be around 12:30pm.

    Ok.. I'm done my pluggyplug

  7. well.. I may have missed Jon Spencer but for me it was worth it. The Demons are the reason why I play sax and I've only missed a couple of their Ottawa shows since 1988 when I started seeing them live.

Lets see.. the guy I was supposed to go with bailed on me so I went down there by myself, but right when I was walking in to the grounds I ran into Richard, the drummer for The Crowd so we hung out together.

We got there about 45 minutes or so early, which might have been a mistake. About five minutes after we arrived and found a spot to hang out in front of the stage it started to dump rain. It was brutal. We both got soaked to the bones.

After a couple of minutes of trying to figure out what to do we went over to the "gold pass holder" tent and just walked in. Nobody stopped us, which was nice, and we were able to get a beer and have a seat and get out of the rain.

The downpoor only lasted about 15 minutes but it was heavy. Of course as soon as it was over the sky cleared up and the sun came out and we got booted from the tent.

The demons started the show typical demon style, appearing from off stage, and walking through the audience jamming on the standard opening tune "Perry's Groove". They twisted their way through the audience, warming us up with the funk and headed for the stage and the show began.

My memory has never been very good for stuff like this but the setlist went something like:

    Perry's Groove

    Pavin My Road

    Gabi's Gimi Suit

    Cheese On Bread

    Out Of My House, Roach

    Hockey Night In Canada Theme

    What Do You Want

    Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting

    Spadina Bus

I figure the setlist is probably very similar from gig to gig on this tour, what with it being their "20th Anniversary Tour" and that kinda makes it a "greatest hits tour" as well. Old fans coming out to hear the old favourites and what not.

Anyway, I hooked up with the boys backstage after the gig and was talking with Stytch (the drummer) about whether or not they had plans to keep the band going or if this was just a one summer tour, and much to my surprise and delight he said they all wanted to try and keep it going.

They are in Kingston on Friday and Montreal on Saturday, where they are playing at 9:00pm and 11:00pm on the main stage of the Montreal Jazz Festival.

next up, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones Friday night.. can't wait for that show.. hope everyone going down to see them in TO tonight has a great time!

  8. yeah.. I know about the working and schooling and such.. and part of me wants it because that's where my recent family is from and I have a lot of family all over the US. I'm certainly not ashamed of having an American family regardless of who is holding the power there.

I do know that I'll never live in the US though, at least I'll never live there until the impliment a decent national health care system. I feel they are denying a basic human right but not providing responsible universal health care.

And yeah.. I know that the way things are currently going in Canada we will soon no longer have decent health care here either.. then maybe I'll move to Northern Europe :)

anyway.. I'm currently in no hurry.. I've gone this long without US citizenship.. and I doubt I'll be able to get it in time to vote in November.. but it's good to know that my folks can at least vote :)

  9. I'm first generation Canadian born to Americans.. and I've been flip flopping as to whether or not I want my American citizenship..

advantage: easier to travel to and from the US, easier to do gigs stateside

disadvantage: well.. none really, since I'm too old for the draft.. it's just kinda a moral thing.. I'm not a fan of how the government is set up in the US and many of the decisions made by it (whether it be Democrat or Republican in power)

but it's interesting to learn that citizens living abroad can vote.. I should tell my folks.. they would love to see Dubya get out

  10. I think these laws need to be re-evaluated. The only people who think the firearm laws are good are people it doesn't affect...people who don't hunt...

(there is no more control over firearms now then before)!

the laws certainly don't affect me. I like the idea behind it but I don't know how it would affect someone with a hunting rifle who hunts as a means of income.

I do know that it's not an election issue with me, except for maybe the killer cost.
