Instinct, maybe? Until very recent times, as within the last generation or three, we were pretty hungry a lot of the time, so eating everything you could get your hands on was a good idea. Now, in the West, we've advanced food production technology so far that we can produce more calories than our ancestors needed to get by on, but their hungry little selves are still compelling us to gobble down everything in sight.
