  1. Dickey used to play Franklin's with the Brothers...Franklin's > Blue Sky

And, as an aside, I love all the Brothers and their side projects, and can never get enough of any of them...but DB&GS are gonna kick your ass!! ::(too bad it'll be almost sold out, 'cause the Opera House isn't the best place for a sold out show)

  2. I was just checking mulebase.com for the date and did a search for Presence of the Lord and it came up with no matches, then it came up under Toronto, but with the * signifying that Marc had joined them on it...which leads me to believe that either that was the only time Mule played that song or that every time they play it they have a guest...hmmm....I think we were very blessed that day ::

  3. Not to stray from the ass-kicking conversation...but...I'm pretty sure I had read on jambands.com several years ago that Juggling Suns got the part of the wedding band in the Julia Roberts/Richard Gere movie "Runaway Bride", but I have yet to see it (and only really wanted to see it for that reason)...now carry on with the ass-kicking...and oh yeah, and I too have the Solar Circus album (on vinyl)...

  4. Whatever he was doing or not doing at The Comfort Zone when he came with Blue Floyd 08/08/2000, he played just fine!!

**footnote** (one of my favourite Mule moments was when Marc Ford got up and played "Presence of the Lord" with GM at Hordefest Molson Amphitheatre 7/28/1998 while he was touring with Chris Stills)

  5. So that's what "Feliz Cumpleazos" means - figured I better look at the thread once it reached 3 pages, as it could very well be important ;) Sure glad I did! Happy birthday Dave! :: You've brought so much joy into so many people's lives, and this could be said based on your music alone. But, not only that, you're one of the most solid and kind people ever, spreading nothing but the best of vibes everywhere you go and to every person you come in contact with. I'm really glad to know you, and hope I still get to see you and Lara often. Hope you had a fabulous day 'cuz you really do deserve it - Karen

  6. Have a Happy New Year Friendly and everyone else out there!! I just got off from working all night and haven't yet decided where my adventures will take me for the midnight hour, but wherever yours finds you, I hope it's a blast!! ::

  7. Wouldn't you know - I miss getting online for one day and I miss something as huge as Velvet's birthday :o...oh well, I know you're still mid-celebration, so the birthday greetings are still in effect ;)

Have a rockin' good time on and around your birthday, and I wish I was there to share in the fun ::

(As one of my all-time favourite Ottawanians, I sure am gonna miss you trippin' through SW Ontario on those nero-runs)

  8. Hey TimmyB - I made it to All Good in 2000 too...too bad I didn't know you then. Mark Vann was still with them, and Bill McKay (keyboard player from the Derek Trucks Band) had just joined them, and didn't Keller Williams sit in for a song or two as well. My good friend Steve from Virginia flew me down on his air miles, and had great knowledge of the grounds the festival took place on. Apparently that piece of land in Spotsylvania was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the civil war - hard to believe considering the good vibes that abounded on that weekend (and many others I'm sure).

And hey Del, if you're doing High Sierra, you might want to consider doing the Oregon Country Fair the following weekend in Eugene. Every year, there's kind of a pilgrimage up the coast (often by the Green Turtle) between the first and second weekends of July. The OCF is the most beautiful gathering I've ever witnessed :)

  9. Yes...yet another super cool Sagittarian amongst us...hopefully your days are fun-filled and free for frolick from now until well into the new year (well, except for that crazy much-anticipated NYE gig, but that's not really work is it? ;)) Cheers - Karen ::

  10. MoMack - If I recall correctly, I'm not sure you'll be wantin' to stumble around the area of the State Theater all that much...or anywhere in Detroit for that matter. Think I saw Ratdog at the State in '98 - gorgeous venue inside, not so nice out on the street (which is where my friend ended up when he got turfed from the show).

Detroit looks like the place to be April 1st though ::

  11. Now, back to the original question of Saturday and Toronto, Shelby Kerr (aka Shelby from Friends of Hefner and Steve Murphy & crazystickbird) told me that she's playing over at Clinton's (Clinton & Bloor) tonight, along with Scott Farmer (previously from Burt Neilson Band) and Mike ? (not sure who Mike is, but I'm sure he's a great talent at whatever he does). Unfortunately, I gotta work, but that's where I'd go if I were off.

Have a safe trip guys and see ya soon (and hopefully you get this before you hit the road) ::

  12. I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around the idea that that Hamilton show may have been the last nero show for me. I don't know how many years you guys were together before breaking out of Ottawa in 1999, but it's been amazing to witness the steady climb in the calibre of playing and the level of support surrounding the band, and I'm hoping the hiatus is just another step in the evolutionary process of nero, 'cuz it's too good to end ::

I really wanna thank you guys for scheduling a show so close to my home on my birthday - you made it really special. It was my initial intention to have a 3-day birthday run, along with the rest of my fellow skancs, but my damn agency scheduled me for a damn job interview (which I didn't get) on Friday morning, effectively putting the kybosh on my Thursday and Friday night plans.

Huge thanks to Pablo, Monkey and Punk for blowing my mind and managing to save lots of enery for the third night of what sounded like the craziest of crazy nero runs. And to Velvet for keeping it all together - I'm going to miss you a lot on your journeys to SW Ontario, so please don't be a stranger.

Also gotta thank everyone else who contributed to my exceptionally positive birthday experience, including Tooly and kc, Stoned Phillips (thanks babe, you're a great friend), Esau (it never is long enough, so yeah, call me and we'll continue where we left off, if either of us can remember where that was), Jstsmkd1 and Tara (god I'm glad you two exist and it's great to see you out and about recently - thanks for the hospitality), Rossolee, Willy, Sarabelle, Studog, Hux, MarcO, Basher, Sloth, Paisley, Alexis, Bradm, and Lazlo (I'm not really thanking you, but you were thanking me for getting your drunk ass back to Hamilton ;)), and of course my good bud New Rider who was overwhelmingly missed, but nevertheless responsible for a certain amount of mayhem I'm sure ::

And where the fu©k was Del-head...you were missed buddy ::

  13. Hey Phishy K - I was also gonna spout the praises of the first album, an alltime classic and one I periodically have to dig out of hiding to listen to...man, that whole haunting beginning with "Down to the Waterline", "Water of Love" and "Setting Me Up". And talk about living vicariously through other people, a couple dear friends of mine had made a spontaneous decision while in the UK back in '85(?) to suddenly fly to India, and while enroute, flying into the sunrise, the only western music on the flight was one station programmed with Dire Straits first album on a loop, for 12 hours or something crazy. Now, every time I listen to the album, I kind of envision flying into the sunrise to an exotic location (hope they don't mind me telling that story, 'cause I love it).

A couple of other memories come to mind as well. Possibly a couple folks remember Dire Straits opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan at Massey Hall (or maybe the Danforth Music Hall) on one of Stevie's early trips to Toronto (or was it the other way around). And on one of Eric Clapton's tours (Maple Leaf Gardens perhaps the day after Phish played the Masonic Temple/Sonic Temple/Concert Hall), Mark Knopfler was the second guitar player. Seemed to me, there was so much potential for an outright manic guitar-jam packed show, but alas, the songs seemed pretty much true to their album sound...ah well ::

  14. Make it happen Marky!!

This past summer was the first since Dickey's departure from the Allman Brothers that I haven't seen him at least once stateside...not that I didn't try, but that Buffalo waterfront show was over by 10pm and not 11 as I thought. Two years in a row, I saw Dickey Betts Band at The Sideshow in Lackawanna, once with Mark May on second guitar and the next time as Dickey Betts and Great Southern with "Dangerous" Dan Toler on second guitar. The next two years, I saw DB&GS at The Tralf also with "Dangerous" Dan. Somehow, though he's a stellar player, Mark May didn't fit the mix in my opinion, whereas Dangerous Dan and Dickey have so much chemistry, it's poetic to say the least.

Last time I saw DB&GS, UF Productions came with me, and we both agreed that we'd got more out of that show than an ABB show, not to mention the extra treat of seeing them in an intimate setting. Dickey usually does two good sets, with the second opening with a sweet acoustic set (though the 3rd time I saw them, Dickey seemed a wee bit tipsy and got impatient with the sound problems during the acoustic set and gave up after a song). He is always genuinely appreciative of his fans, and hangs out on the steps of his bus after the show signing autographs and talking to folks until the last one has shaken his hand. He seems a bit hard of hearing, which adds a lot of credence to one of the rumours that he was ousted from the ABB because of his tendency to go off on solos and not pay attention to what anyone else was playing.

I would definitely highly recommend taking in a DB&GS show, and the only reason it didn't happen a couple years ago was that Dickey tried to cancel out of all his Canadian dates due to SARS, and outright refused to come to Toronto.

As for his last album, he released an all acoustic independent effort after "Let's Get Together" with Dangerous Dan on guitar rather than Mark May called "The Collector's #1" that was only available at his shows. It's a compilation of many old standard tunes, ABB/Dickey tunes, select covers, and possibly a couple originals, and is a real treat to listen to. The setlist is -

    Beyond the Pale

    Georgia on a Fast Train

    One Stop Bebop #2

    Tangled Up in Blue

    Steady Rollin' Man

Change My Way of Livin' #2

    The Preacher

    Seven Turns #3

    Willy and Po' Bob
